22.01.2022 A Special Thanks to Daniela Justus from South Coast Equine who visited Refined Rider Coaching this week. Upon examination Eli was given a clean bill of health reassuring me that he is ready to commence his training.

21.01.2022 A big shout out to Lisa Carney at Gyatso Equissage for all her hard work to keep the horses at Refined Rider Coaching in tip top condition. I can't recommend this business highly enough. For the month of December mention Refined Rider Coaching and get a FREE treatment for your equine friend. What a terrific way to spoil your horse for Christmas!

20.01.2022 So this happened today. I was initially, just gently working with Eli from the ground and had no intention of actually hopping on his back....but as a trainer sometimes you just need to go with your gut instinct. I read all the signs and everything felt right. We had a good connection. I felt like I could trust Eli and he obviously felt the same way. My husband caught me playing and grabbed the camera, so please excuse the less than elegant attire. I was not intending to share this, but hey let's keep it real and you can see me looking my worst. Training young horses doesn't always look pretty.

19.01.2022 A thought-provoking read. By Author Jane Smiley Most horses pass from one human to another - some horsemen and women are patient and forgiving, others are rigor...ous and demanding, others are cruel, others are ignorant. Horses have to learn how to, at the minimum, walk, trot, canter, gallop, go on trails and maybe jump, to be treated by the vet, all with sense and good manners. Talented Thoroughbreds must learn how to win races, and if they can't do that, they must learn how to negotiate courses and jump over strange obstacles without touching them, or do complicated dance like movements or control cattle or accommodate severely handicapped children and adults in therapy work. Many horses learn all of these things in the course of a single lifetime. Besides this, they learn to understand and fit into the successive social systems of other horses they meet along the way. A horse's life is rather like twenty years in foster care, or in and out of prison, while at the same time changing schools over and over and discovering that not only do the other students already have their own social groups, but that what you learned at the old school hasn't much application at the new one. We do not require as much of any other species, including humans. That horses frequently excel, that they exceed the expectations of their owners and trainers in such circumstances, is as much a testament to their intelligence and adaptability as to their relationship skills or their natural generosity or their inborn nature. That they sometimes manifest the same symptoms as abandoned orphans - distress, strange behaviors, anger, fear - is less surprising than that they usually don't. No one expects a child, or even a dog to develop its intellectual capacities living in a box 23 hours a day and then doing controlled exercises the remaining one. Mammal minds develop through social interaction and stimulation. A horse that seems "stupid", "slow", "stubborn", etc. might just have not gotten the chance to learn! Take care of your horses and treasure them.

19.01.2022 Beautiful and so true!

18.01.2022 I am searching on behalf of a client for her next unicorn. Needs to be a registered full or part bred ASH Gelding, 14.3hh to 15.2hh, aged 8 to 10 years. Must have a good temperament, soft snaffle mouth, nice ground manners and be kind and responsive under saddle. If you wouldn't put your child or grandmother on him then he wouldn't be suitable. All of the usual ie good to catch, shoe, float, clip etc. Must be trained to preliminary dressage and be suitable for local showing, working equitation and trail riding. Please comment below if you have or know of anything suitable. Budget up to $8000.

14.01.2022 Please be very careful when administering worming pastes.

12.01.2022 In this short video you will see Eli wearing a bridle for the first time. When I start mouthing a horse I only put the bridle on for about 10 minutes. I have no expectations of the horse other than to experience what it is like to have a bit in their mouth. I keep it simple, short and sweet. The horse is given lots of praise and encouragement when they play with the bit and lick and chew. I stay with the horse in case they try to pull it off their head. It is essential that their first experience with a bridle is positive.

09.01.2022 As most horses prefer to look and smell like the 'north end of a south bound camel', this is clearly not what Eli had in mind when he came running up to me in the paddock today. The facial expression and stance says it all. First proper bath for the newly turned 3 year old.

07.01.2022 A very important message. As horse riders we tend to be very self critical. An instructor's role is not only to teach a rider how to execute lovely movements, but to develop the rider's confidence, self esteem and help them develop a partnership with their equine dance partner.

07.01.2022 Eli has now commenced his training. Today's footage shows Eli learning to lunge. He is starting to respond well to verbal cues, body language and the flag. Note that he is not scared of the flag, simply responsive to the way it is used, as it is often used to reward his correct actions. When Eli performs an action well he is instantly rewarded and given time to process.

05.01.2022 One of my favourite things to teach as an instructor is Medium level dressage. At Medium we begin to understand why we put so much effort into perfecting movements such as Travers, Shoulder in and Renvers. This was a first attempt at half pass by both horse and rider. What a fabulous effort by Daniela Justus and her dance partner, Berkley.

03.01.2022 Hi Everyone, I have some friends looking to purchase at least 5 acres in either Falls Creek, Woollamia, or Tomerong area. They are a lovely family of four who need sufficient space for 5 horses. If you know of any suitable properties about to go on the market could you please comment below.

02.01.2022 I often get called by clients not long after the purchase of new horse has been made. Quite often because the horse isn't performing for the client as it did when he/she trialled the horse on the property where it was most familiar and has spent most of it's life. For those contemplating purchasing a new horse or for those who have recently purchased a new horse, this is an important read. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=3993832447296959&id=478847535462152

02.01.2022 Some photos from this morning's session. Sitting up on Eli.
