25.01.2022 Emma Alberici in the news the last few days - we wanted to throw back to this excellent interview when the Australian Government decided to interfere with a Witness, and seize Collaery's legal brief, after rifling through his chambers and highly sensitive information. Now we all know - it's the Helium they don't want you finding out about.

24.01.2022 "It’s important to remember that press freedom has never been just about journalists. It’s also about courageous whistleblowers who risk all by speaking out. Without them, we might never know what the state is trying to hide."

24.01.2022 Did you catch the online Australia Institute Zoom conference with guests Bernard Collaery and Jose Ramos-Horta? I'll be posting a few clips from the hour long discussion, and though this one had relevance to the short 'Ask Albo' clip. I am wondering if this was Christopher Knaus @knausc from The Guardian, formerly Canberra Times?

21.01.2022 29 years ago today, the nature of Timor-Leste's struggle for independence changed with the filming of the Santa Cruz massacre by Max Stahl and the smuggling of the film out to TV channels around the world by Saskia Kowenberg. Some of Max's footage is here in the trailer to the film 'Bloodshot'. Kirsty Sword Gusmao was part of Max's team, another Australian, Bob Muntz, was injured. A Malaysian New Zealander Kamal Bamadhaj, studying at the University of New South Wales was killed along with hundreds of Timorese. As this film clip shows, it really was a turning point in the struggle.

16.01.2022 "The former Timor-Leste president José Ramos-Horta has urged Australia to show wisdom, honesty and compassion by stopping the unfair prosecution of Witness K and Bernard Collaery, a case he described as political and one that had profoundly shocked the Timorese people." https://www.theguardian.com//jose-ramos-horta-urges-austra

14.01.2022 We're big fans of the work Crikey does, especially with keeping a finger on the pulse of Bernard Collaery and Witness K. If you haven't organised your subscription to Crikey, we recommend you take advantage of their occasional specials and discounts on offer. This clip is taken from one of their Premium subscription 'Crikey Talks' interviews. We decided it was important to share for a few reasons: This is probably the first time the leader of the opposition has made clear se...ntiments on the situation around Witness K, Bernard Collaery and the 'alleged' bugging of the East Timorese boardroom. It appears to us that Albo could use our ideas and suggestions, on how to turn the out of control secrecy bus around, or how he can stand in his position as leader of the ALP and make some noise about the whole turgid situation. Assuming he really does stand by his word, and he's not just delivering hollow platitudes for campaign betterment. What do you think? Do you want to ask for a little more from Albo?

14.01.2022 "Claims that the release of information poses a risk to national security can be used to avoid legitimate scrutiny of conduct. If ever there were reasons to suspect a cover-up by this government, the Bernard Collaery and Witness K court cases are prime examples, writes Ian Cunliffe." ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ian Cunliffe Lawyer, formerly senior federal public servant (CEO Constitutional Commission, CEO Law Reform Commission, Department of PM&C, Protective Security Review and first Ro...yal Commission on Intelligence and Security; High Court Associate (1971) ; partner of major law firms. Awarded Premier's Award (2018) and Law Institute of Victoria's President's Award for pro bono work (2005). https://www.michaelwest.com.au/coalitions-push-for-secret-/

09.01.2022 With the secret prosecution of lawyer Bernard Collaery and intelligence whistle-blower ‘Witness K’ over the East Timor bugging scandal, and the highly publicised AFP raids on journalist, there is widespread concern around how Australian intelligence agencies are operating. Public faith in Australia’s institutions is declining and while there has been a phenomenal proliferation of national security and anti-terrorism legislation in Australia over the last 20 years, checks an...d balances have not kept up. Australia can learn from the oversight mechanisms in other Five Eyes countries, and in some cases the countries will have the same intelligence from the same sources, so oversight should be equally robust in all Five Eyes countries. https://www.tai.org.au//oversight-australia-s-spy-agencies

08.01.2022 Please find your local event, come along and make some noise for Bernard Collaery and Witness K.

08.01.2022 A witty snip from the English TV satire - Yes Prime Minister. Echoes of bugging, and knowledge of the bugging, and whether the bugging happened or not. Either way, in Australia, they'll prosecute truth tellers without confirming or denying that events even transpired.

02.01.2022 #ICYMI Law Council of Australia president Pauline Wright has pledged support for former ACT Attorney-General Bernard Collaery, noting that the closed-door proceedings against him offend the principles of open justice. #auslaw https://www.lawyersweekly.com.au//29725-lca-offers-support

01.01.2022 It’s time to drop the prosecutions
