24.01.2022 We are about a week or two off of launching our Insect Preservation comprehensive Guide and Kit! Can’t wait until we launch and can’t wait to see what you all create!... #insectpinning #entomology #restinpieces #learn #create #art #science

24.01.2022 This beautiful Badger needs a home! Don’t be fooled by his derpy face, badgers are pretty ferocious. When startled they rush at their assailants, releasing a potent scent from their anal glands, rattling and standing tall with their hackles raised. This usually scares the predator away. Even if a badger is caught, its loose skin enables it to twist round and bite its attacker. This fellow is available now on our online store The Cabinet. Collection from our Northcote studio ...available or you can request a postage quote! www.restinpieces.com.au

23.01.2022 Many of you watched the process of completing a Rooster from start to finish. This is our completed French Maran in Black Copper! He is available on our website for collection from our Northcote studio, as well as some new diaphonised goodies. We hope you have enjoyed watching the process on how we create these beautiful boys. It’s been a joy to share the process xx

21.01.2022 We are currently working on writing four new workshops! The new beginner Cane Toad taxidermy workshop is super interesting because the anatomy of this invasive amphibian is so different from the mammal and bird classes that we teach. @thetaxitech and I are enjoying problem solving how to work with such different preservation and recreation techniques. Our new range of classes will be launching in 2021!

18.01.2022 Diaphonisation was first developed in 1977 by the scientists G. Dingerkus and L.D. Uhler, and has also been known as clearing and staining. The process uses chemicals which are employed to render the skin of an animal translucent, as well as break down flesh, while dyes are used to colour the bones or cartilage. These specimens become transparent and offer a window into their skeletal structure. A truly beautiful way to see anatomy. These specimens are now available in The Ca...binet and are available for global shipping or we have free shipping for Australian customers. www.restinpieces.com.au

18.01.2022 We bring your pets to work day here at RIP! Meet Caro our newest member of the team and her family of Patchwork Rex Rats They are soooooo sweet! #rats #petsatwork #love

18.01.2022 A unique insight into the human medical museum where one of our very own RIP team contributed his skills towards some of the pieces on display. Take the virtual tour and click on the icons for close ups! It's really cool. Thanks for sharing Gavin Burland and for all the awesome skills you bring to our team and universities!... You will need to watch this on your computer as the link doesn't work on the phone. Enjoy xx https://5263:[email protected]/VAM/ Username: 6044 Password: 463212

17.01.2022 Had a beautiful day with @carpusdiem on zoom writing and testing the first day of our new beginner Japanese quail skeletal articulation workshop over zoom! It’s incredibly difficult creating new workshops while we won’t be able to physically see each other and create together until 2021 and yet it brought me so much joy to make things, to discuss our students, our classes, our company, ourselves, our challenges and our growth in this weird year. I loved my day with you @carpusdiem and I our new Japanese Quail skeletal articulation workshop so much. It’s going to be as wonderful as you are xx Thank you for a beautiful Saturday! I’m so grateful you are part of this incredible team

17.01.2022 @housethathaleybuilt just completed her second attempt at Rat Taxidermy off the back of her first class with us! It’s so fantastic to see the growth of our students technique as they work on each specimen. Now that Melbourne is out of lock down we can finally bring you our next beginner taxidermy workshop which is taking place next Saturday the 3rd of July at our Northcote studio. ... 16.01.2022 It’s official our very own @thetaxitech has finally lost her marbles after being locked down since March with us here in Melbourne! She almost choked herself to death laughing with this little game..... shall we play??? Simply replace all of the vowels in an Animals name with an O and post your results below. For example our gorgeous Plotypos Aka Platypus! Before we start the game I may as well give you some interesting facts about yet another awesome Australian Animal. ... When the first platypus specimens were brought to England from Australia in the 18th century, Wilson says, "most of the naturalists who looked at them thought they were some kind of fake." People suspected that a taxidermist had gotten creative and sewn the bill of a duck on some sort of beaver-like creature and added webbed feet As we all know however, they certainly do exist! But their unusual appearance isn’t the only thing that makes them unique. Just like the Echindna or the Ochondno (for the purpose of our game) they are Monotremes which means they are mammals that lay eggs and have no teats! The milk is provided to their young by the pores on the females body that they secrete. Gotta Australia! Cred biologykingdom, sciencedirect and jmexclusives

15.01.2022 Congratulations to @plastination_vet and to the awesome team @bliseygirl, Zoe, Andrew & Julia on another great class. This weekend we ran the 2 Day Corrosion Casting Workshop in Sydney and by all reports it was a fun filled, creative two days. I couldn’t be there because of border closures but I was there in spirit!!! How many people noticed in the class?? Hahaha

15.01.2022 This is Luffy, a gorgeous little 2 month old miniature chihuahua that sadly passed away! Being so young we were unable to complete a skull preservation for his owner Chloe! But following in the footsteps of @preciouscreature we were able to preserve all of Luffy’s bones, so that he can be remembered and loved We understand that pets are our families and no matter how long they got to be on this earth, the attachment and loss for an owner is very real. 12.01.2022 We have just finished a new range of Baby Chick Diaphonised Specimens. Diaphonisation was first developed in 1977 by the scientists G. Dingerkus and L.D. Uhler, and has also been known as clearing and staining. The process uses chemicals which are employed to render the skin of an animal translucent, as well as break down flesh, while dyes are used to colour the bones or cartilage. 12.01.2022 Bela, Bryan and Mollie are now finally reunited! Bela is a skull preservation that we worked on from start to finish for our amazing client Larissa. You will notice a difference in the final bone quality between him and Bryan and Mollie. The reason for this is Bryan was originally buried and Mollie had been cleaned and worked on by an embalmer many years ago. It’s far more difficult to complete correction work on skulls and bones, than managing the process of start to finish.... That being said we are happy to do what we can to assist our clients to get the best outcomes. We are so pleased that they can be all reunited. Mollie and Bryan have been mounted together as she used to sit between Bryan’s legs. Thank you for trusting us with memorialising your gorgeous family Larissa. If you are looking for a bespoke aftercare solution please fill out an enquiry form on The Memoriam at www.restinpieces.com.au #pets #skulls #memorialise #australia #melbourne

12.01.2022 Well it’s fair to say the Ares in now 52 grams lighter. We get a range of unusual requests for preservation like wet preserving Ares testicles and a couple of years ago we had a request to clean and articulate a gentleman’s big toe that was amputated due to diabetes. What has been your most unusual request working in this industry?

12.01.2022 My uncle just found one of these velvet worms on his fence post in Melbourne which sent me down a rabbit hole to find out more about them! Velvet worms possess an ancient trait that seems like something out of science fiction. These creatures can spray a gluey slime up to 30 centimetres (1 ft) away to immobilize prey. The slime gets blasted out like a sprinkler which soon solidifies and traps the prey. After the prey is slimed, the velvet worm uses its powerful jaws that cont...ain the equivalent of a knife to rip the prey’s exoskeleton or skin. Next, the worm spits powerful enzymes into the body cavity of the prey through the opening ripped in the exoskeleton. The prey dissolves into a chemical milkshake, which the velvet worm consumes as a slurry. Delicious! Whilst most velvet worms are loners. The remarkably evolved Australian species Euperipatoides rowelli is a pack hunter with a complex social organisation and group hierarchy, all centred around a typically female leader. The animals forming these sophisticated organizations can trap more substantial prey through combined sliming attacks. A social order is strongly enforced, as though a pack of wolves or pride of tiny lions were at work. Clever Aussies! And if this wasn’t weird enough, velvet worm males in the family Peripatopsidae will deposit sperm packets on the skin of females rather than inseminating them. The female then produces an enzyme that dissolves not only the sperm package casing but also her own skin. Through this exterior burn wound, she will absorb the sperm. After the cluster of sperm breaks apart, it will course through her bloodstream. One velvet worm species forgoes traditional two-partner sexual reproduction altogether. Instead, this species clones itself to produce the next generation of its kind. Don’t underestimate these guys, they will no doubt outlive us all! #mymilkshakebringsalltheboystotheyard #velvetworm #slime #melbourne Credit- Uncle Ulrik, Geoff Gallic, Stanley Kemp, Ivo S. 11.01.2022 This is far too cool not to share! This is an ants face magnified under an electron microscope An electron microscope is a microscope that uses a beam of accelerated electrons as a source of illumination. How incredible is this and post by @spacespot

11.01.2022 Reminiscing on the World Taxidermy Champions! @ellekayetaxidermy just found these pics of us at the banquet..... Miss you all and hope we can be reunited next year! We have made such a nice crew of badass females from all around the world. I can’t wait to see you all again soon x

10.01.2022 I just loved this post by @alannurgh it really captures the spirit of what we are trying to achieve at RIP! We have had many challenges and learned a lot of hard lessons over the years but creating a strong, loving, diverse community and providing knowledge to all has always been at the forefront of my mind. I know from my own experience that I have met incredible people, made a lot of friends, have been provided with support in moments of need and now have an entire team a...cross 2 states made up of people who started as students. Im looking forward to getting back in the saddle this weekend and teaching taxidermy again in Melbourne. Thanks for being such a great community and congrats @plastination_vet on another great class xx

08.01.2022 One of the more unusual things we have wet preserved is Ares testicals! I know his owner @mortal_remains_creations will be happy to see them again. I’m not sure how stoked Ares will be being reunited however. #testicals #wetspecimen #wetpreservation #castrate #neuter #dog #nothappyjan

06.01.2022 I am so fascinated by this Rabbit nervous system! We have one of these available for collection from our Northcote, Melbourne studio. We rarely come by these as they have come from museums and universities that have been clearing out their collections. We spend months cleaning and re-preserving the specimens into a non-toxic formula. Such a beautiful visual of the anatomy of a rabbit! 04.01.2022 The @thetaxitech has been very busy! We are using this lock down to just hone our skills one specimen at a time! Here is a question for you all. What is a group of Roosters called? #rooster #taxidermy #melbourne #covidlockdown #cocks #interiordesign

04.01.2022 Even though we were unable to return to the @cartercountymuseum in Ekalaka Montana this year to continue work on the pinto plesiosaur that we dug up with an amazing crew led by Robin O’Keefe. It has been awesome to be kept updated of its progress by @henry_2177 In these photos you can see our original jacket from the field being cut open by @elliottarmoursmith to reveal the vertebral column. A part of the Plesiour that I spent many a day digging 2 years ago. The team then re...worked the fossil into its new jacket and clamshell which will become its forever home at the Museum!! Thanks for the updates guys and we can’t wait to see it next year when we return if covid doesn’t prevent our journey once more! #plesiosaur #paleontology #ekalaka #montana #cartercountymuseum
