25.01.2022 More than 100 years ago, at 11am on 11 November 1918, the guns on the Western Front fell silent after four years of the most brutal war the world had seen. In the four years of that war, more than 330,000 Australians served overseas, and over 60,000 had died. Today, on 11 November we mark that anniversary, and remember all those who sacrificed so much for us all, both in WWI, and all the wars, conflicts and operations that have happened since, and still continue today.... We particularly honour and celebrate those among our residents, and their families, who are veterans of conflicts, and hope that you will join us in paying our respects and express our gratitude for all they have given.

24.01.2022 The Sewing Circle at Carlyle Gardens Retirement Village has been a hive of activity of late, whipping up wildlife pouches and even a nest for Jody the Brushtail Possum! We love seeing that young Jody has given it his stamp of approval

23.01.2022 At midnight tonight, South Australia enters a six day lockdown to allow for a contact tracing blitz on cases linked to the Parafield cluster. Please read our important update to find out what this means for our South Australian communities.

22.01.2022 In honour of Melbourne Cup today, we thought we’d share a fantastic story written by one of our Boambee Gardens Retirement Village residents, Barry Jacobs. Barry was a jockey for 17 years and a trainer for 10, winning the Coffs Harbour Cup on Sabre Luck in 1991. As well as having an affinity with horses, he has the ear of a natural storyteller. This tale has it all a medium, a barber, a Melbourne Cup winner and a box brownie photo. We’ve even included Barry’s tips for the race that stops a nation. http://ow.ly/yl2X50C6MX5

22.01.2022 Recently, there has been an increase in scammers targeting older Australians, often using increasingly sophisticated technology. We’ve put together a handy blog post explaining how the scams work, how to spot them and how to protect yourself. http://ow.ly/2tLh50CeXs4

21.01.2022 I see that it is by no means useless to travel, if a man wants to see something new. Jules Verne (Around the World in Eighty Days, 1873). In this case, residents from Belrose Country Club Retirement Village ‘travelled’ from the comfort of their village to see a familiar sight. Their means of travel was a little less familiar (and COVID safe!) as they used the internet to re-discover their childhood homes.

20.01.2022 The night before lockdown, Yvonne, a resident at Bartonvale Retirement Villages in Adelaide, snuck out to enjoy the beautiful village gardens for the last time before stay at home orders came into place. She captured some beautiful shots of her community. We are with you in spirit South Australia and hope you will all be out and about smelling the roses really soon.

13.01.2022 In the lead-up to Valentine’s Day, we thought we’d share some sweet love stories featuring RetireAustralia residents. Childhood sweethearts and Tarragal Glen Retirement Village residents, William (Bill) and Clare, celebrated 75 years of marriage last year. They were married on the first day of Spring in 1945, the day before World War II ended. In fact, Bill went absent without leave (AWOL) from his army posting in Newcastle to marry his beautiful bride. The couple honeymoo...ned for just two nights by the beach in Terrigal, before Bill dashed back to the army base where he was charged and promptly sent back to Darwin. Bill still clearly remembers the day he was discharged from the army. As we was waiting for the tram to take him into town, he says: Clare was standing on the footpath looking up at me, waiting for the tram to depart. I grabbed her and took her on board with me, and we’ve been together ever since. Congratulations on a long and happy marriage, Bill and Clare!

13.01.2022 It’s often said that love will find a way, and that’s something to celebrate on Valentine’s Day! Here’s one of our favourite love stories about two RetireAustralia residents. John and Thelma have been married for 63 years, but were forced to live apart for 12 months when a progressive disorder required John to move into an aged care facility. When their daughter found Glengara Aged Care Apartments on the Central Coast, they were re-united once again quite simply, this wa...s the best anniversary gift they could have hoped for. 10.01.2022 We have a champion* in our midst at Belrose Country Club Retirement Village ! Under the tutelage of resident Tricia, Abbey the Cavvie [Cavalier King Charles Spaniel] entered her very first obedience competition last month. Trish adopted Abbey four years ago, when the pup was just six months old. Abbey’s breeder no longer wanted her, as she was too small to be a show dog and her markings were considered imperfect. [She may not win ‘best in show’ but she sure looks perfect to ...us! ] Trish has been involved with obedience training for many years, and said Abbey was timid at first. But over the years, Trish has worked hard on Abbey’s confidence. She’s taken Abbey to dog clubs and socialised her with the Belrose Country Club community, and recently felt that Abbey was ready for formal competition. And boy was Trish right. She and Abbey scored a whopping 99 out of 100, tying for second place! For Abbey’s first competition, this is a fantastic achievement. We prescribe lots of tasty treats for this very good dog. Congrats Trish and Abbey! * Ok ok, we admit that technically speaking, Abbey may not have won but she’s a champion in our eyes.

09.01.2022 Meet mother and daughter duo Margaret and Denise. They live at Forresters Beach Retirement Village on the Central Coast and love the community but for different reasons. As only the third resident to move in 17 years ago, Margaret holds a special place in the village’s history. You’ll find Margaret at the buzzing café, bingo, or having her hair done by the village hairdresser, Wendy. Meanwhile, aqua aerobics and weekly meditation are more Denise’s style though she’s also ...partial to stopping at the café for lunch and seeing Wendy for a blow dry. In fact, Village Manager Julie tells us that Denise has the most popular hairstyle in the village and Wendy often gets requests for something similar! http://ow.ly/c0Mr50DtMzB

08.01.2022 They say dogs are a man’s and woman’s! best friend. Research shows that our canine companions can boost mental health and wellbeing, reduce loneliness, and enrich our lives. For living proof of this, we need look no further than Max, an affectionate cavoodle puppy belonging to Bartonvale Retirement Villages Manager Robyn Bennett. Max visits the village twice a week, bringing much joy to many residents. Read all about it on our Good News Hub!

08.01.2022 Residents at many of RetireAustralia’s retirement villages celebrated the race that stops the nation in style, with glorious fascinators, delicious treats, a cheeky flutter on the horses, and a host of cup-related activities. Including pin the tail on the horse. Check out the pictures from Boambee Gardens Retirement Village, Drayton Villas Retirement Village, Wellington Manor Retirement Village, Lincoln Grove Retirement Village and Wisteria Grove Retirement Village!

03.01.2022 Today is Safer Internet Day. In the past year, the internet has brought us together to connect, socialise, learn, share, and be entertained. But this means it’s more important than ever to stay safe online. Scams targeting retirees are on the rise, so we’ve put together some tips to help you protect yourself: Phishing: scammers try to ‘fish’ for your personal information. They will call, email or send you a text message, pretending to be from a reputation organisation. P...reviously, scammers have pretended to be from the Department of Health, MyGov and the Australian Taxation Office. TIP: If in doubt, don’t proceed. Government agencies will never ask you to reply with personal details over email or text message. Hacking: scammers will break (or ‘hack’) into your computer or mobile device. They will email you, send you a message on social media, or target you via a pop-up ad. TIP: Scam sites can look legitimate with logos, disclaimers and branding. But you’ll be asked to download special software to access the ‘free’ content’. This will allow scammers to install software on your computer, which they can use to access your files or steal personal info. Remote access scams: Many scams originate with a phone call, even if your number is on the Do Not Call register. Scammers will pretend to be from a reputable company and try to convince you there’s a problem with your computer or internet. TIP: Never give a stranger remote access to your computer, even if they claim to be from Telstra, the NBN or another trusted organisation. For more tips, click on the URL below . 01.01.2022 Today we pay tribute to the men and women who have served and are still serving in our defence forces. We particularly honour our many residents who are veterans of armed conflict. In the lead up to Remembrance Day, we spoke with Boambee Gardens Retirement Village resident Ross Kingston, 95. Not only is Ross a World War II veteran, but he was involved in D-Day. He tells us what it was like on the HMS Bulolo, where he was when the war ended, and about coming to Australia after WWII. Read his story below: http://ow.ly/NqrD50Chaof
