09.01.2022 **Alert - Security Threat** CryptoLocker V2 is an active virus that is delivered by email and is currently causing significant issues with businesses all over the world. As of today we have seen this email threat be sent to 7 email addresses of the thousands that we monitor. We have taken precautions to prevent this issue from occurring on our client networks however user awareness is the key to preventing the threat from compromising your network.... The email threat is commonly delivered using email addresses including [email protected] and the email contents includes Australia Post branding. Note: There may be other variations DO NOT open the email, forward the email or click inside the contents of the email. Delete it immediately and notify [email protected] so we can be sure the threat is stopped. Steps to minimise the risk - Scrutinize email messages carefully. Be wary of every email you receive, specially those from unverified sources. Users can do this by doing their research or communicating directly to the purported sender to confirm if they sent the messages. - Refrain from clicking links embedded in email. It is best to avoid clicking links in email. However if you need to, make sure that your browser uses web reputation to check the link. Backup documents. Users should also do well to back up their documents. The 3-2-1 rule applies here three backup copies of your data, on two different media, and one of those copies in a separate location. Cloud storage services like Retracs Backup Manager are adequate. - Regularly update software. Though no known CryptoLocker and ransomware were found to exploit any software vulnerabilities, it is best to update your software with the latest security patch. This provides added layer of protection against online threats in general. Retracs ProActive / Complete clients recieve patches automatically. Everyone else should be running windows & 3rd party updates regularily. - Install security solution. Using reliable antimalware solution can detect such threats even before it begins. Security solutions like Retracs Managed Anti-Virus and Anti-Spam assist in preventing outbreaks. It is important to review policies related to email attachments and impose a strict attachment blocking policies. It is recommended to discourage employees to send executables via email messages. - Dont allow end user to have Administrative privelidges on the desktop.
