25.01.2022 I have a few available appointments this week, notably on Wednesday and Friday. I am away next week (5-9 July), for skiing (snow permitting!), so if you wish for an appointment, please book in for this week, or the week starting 12 July. Book online: https://revive-your-health.cliniko.com/bookings#service

25.01.2022 Latest testing of vitamin D in Covid shows significant results. Of 50 patients given vitamin D, only one ended in ICU. Of those untreated, half ended up in ICU. Please see me for quality vitamin D supplements and other health support. Our pilot study demonstrated that administration of a high dose of Calcifediol or 25-hydroxyvitamin D, a main metabolite of vitamin D endocrine system, significantly reduced the need for ICU treatment of patients requiring hospitalization due to proven COVID-19. Calcifediol seems to be able to reduce severity of the disease.

25.01.2022 It is a good time of the year to review what steps you can take to give your life more meaning. Happiness is not necessarily given to us, sometimes we have to create the best environment to allow it to flourish. The scientists tested which of these three factors might be most predictive of life meaning. Using a sample of 126 British adults, they found that mattering was most strongly associated with life meaning. Purpose was also predictive of life meaning but to a lesser extent. Coherence, on the other hand, appeared to be more of a consequence of life meaning than a cause.

25.01.2022 There is a lot of fear from how the virus is transmitted. This article discusses the likelihood of it being transmitted via objects. Again, the best advice is to wash your hands after being out anywhere, not to disinfect items out of fear of transmission.

25.01.2022 Exercise can’t replace sleep but it offsets the worst of the lack of sleep. Regular exercise can also help induce good sleep, making it a win-win. Please see me in clinic for help with achieving good sleep. Poor sleepers who also exercised the least fared the worst. This group was 57 per cent more likely to die of any cause than those in the group who generally slept well and met the WHO exercise guidelines of between 150 and 300 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise a week.

24.01.2022 This does explain the dire mystery of menopausal weight gain fairly well. As well as offering some suggestions as to how to combat it, in terms of exercise and diet. For help with this, as well as other aspects of menopause, please book in for an online naturopathic consultation. As we age, our body stops working as efficiently as it did before. Muscle mass starts to decrease a process known as sarcopenia and fat begins to increase. And because muscle mass is one of the determining factors of how fast your metabolism will run, when your muscle mass decreases, your body starts to burn fewer calories at rest. This might make it more challenging to maintain your weight.

23.01.2022 It is important to learn from experiences of other cultures, and in the Hawaiian culture, it is important to listen to the person who is suicidal. Time spent genuinely listening is a skill rarely practised in our culture, and maybe one we should learn. to care with aloha necessitates we listen to the mooelo or talking story of the suicidal person. In other words, we must listen to their lived experience. The leaders of the support group claim that this kind of community support and listening often effortlessly align with the needs of the suicidal person at the time of greatest need.

23.01.2022 People often say I dont have time to exercise, to which I will suggest that they find a skipping rope and ten minutes. Skipping is amazing for your fitness, and takes little time to achieve high heart rate and results. Treat it as a personal challenge - start counting how many skips you can get up to, without stopping.

22.01.2022 Focus on what you can control...

22.01.2022 A good read for a reassessment of how we perceive mental health. ..since mental health is not the opposite of mental illness, and since both are important to people’s life outcomes, we can no longer assume that the absence of mental illness equals the presence of mental health or vice versa. This means that we should direct resources not solely to combatting mental illness but alsoas positive psychology rightly instructsto protecting and improving people's positive mental health.

22.01.2022 Sleep is essential and deep sleep is a measure of good health. If you are not getting quality sleep, please consider seeing me to discuss why you are not sleeping, and how to achieve genuine restful sleep. If deep, restorative sleep can slow down this disease, we should be making it a major priority," Winer said. "And if physicians know about this connection, they can ask their older patients about their sleep quality and suggest sleep as a prevention strategy."

21.01.2022 I am such a believer in the benefits of choosing the right colour. As anyone who has set foot into my clinic will know, I love blue. But it has to be the right blue - not too cold, not too bright. But its about finding the right colour for you, and recognising that living in a drab environment may not help your mental health. A good article to see what small changes may help your colour scheme.

20.01.2022 Interest study showing the link between low levels of 5-HTT, a serotonin transporter, in those with ASD. There is no simple one pill answer to this, but a good start is eating a clean, real food diet, and ensuring good levels of necessary minerals and vitamins to ensure the pathways to creating good levels of serotonin and the transporters. The study shows that people with ASD have lower concentrations of the serotonin transporter in the cerebral cortex and several other areas of the brain, including the brain stem, which mediates signals between the cerebrum, the cerebellum, the spinal chord and the peripheral nervous system. They also found a correlation between the participants scores in social cognitive tests of skills typically impaired in ASD, and levels of 5-HTT in certain areas of the brain.

20.01.2022 Great story about the benefits and ability of women over 70 going to the gym and lifting weights. The health benefits are amazing and its a great read for inspiration on how to age with pride and strength.

20.01.2022 Eve is fully booked this week, but next week has availability: 3:30 Monday, 3:30 Wednesday, or 2:00 or 3:30 Thursday. Book online: https://revive-your-health.cliniko.com/bookings#service

20.01.2022 This is interesting research into using probiotics from bacteria from healthy skin to successfully help the eczema on others. I am interested in investigating this further but thought it was of note, as eczema, particularly in children, can be distressing.

20.01.2022 This is a great article, giving detail on the intake and need for salt and potassium in our diet, and the difficulty in getting enough when eating a low carb diet. This is not to say that low carb is not healthy, but it is worth considering judicious supplementing of these essential minerals to maintain great health, if you are eating low carb, long term. https://www.virtahealth.com//potassium-sodium-ketogenic-di

20.01.2022 Apparently the usual idea of being either a morning lark or a night owl is subject to variability. I note that the study was mostly performed upon university students, and would dearly love to see a similar study done on sleep deprived parents, or stressed post-menopausal women.. Nonetheless, it offers more validity to finding your chronotype. "The six chronotypes which the researchers now consider to be "fully confirmed" on the strength of the results include the established morning and evening types, along with the four new chronotypes: highly active type, daytime sleepy type, daytime active type, and moderately active type."

18.01.2022 I have always found that patting animals helps to calm people. Turns out that it is important for the anxiety of the animal also. Paying them attention before we leave home appears to be helpful for their sense of calm. My dog Ziggy thinks that I should pat him all the time. When I leave. When I get back. Whenever I sit down... If it helps both of us feel more at peace, who am I to complain.

18.01.2022 Applying realistic expectations to life offer the best pathway to happiness. Our main finding is that it is not just outcomes that matter but also expectations. Other things being equal, overestimating outcomes and underestimating them are both associated with lower wellbeing than getting expectations about right. Realists do best. http://theconversation.com/why-realism-is-the-key-to-wellbe

18.01.2022 Cranky, forgetful and dreamy... Not the missing dwarves from Snow White, but our new way of life under iso.. If you are having trouble coping with home time, make time every day to get outside, exercise, talk with friends on the phone, and practice gratitude. For help with sleep or anxiety, please book in for a naturopathic appointment with me.

17.01.2022 A good read about a newly found source of fuel for cancer: acetate. This is formed as the liver tries to remove alcohol from our body. If added to the other common fuel, sugar, it creates a perfect feeding ground for cancer cells. Time to re-think the rum and coke if you want to fight cancer, not feed it. Having just a single drink can cause your blood acetate level to double. Multiple drinks can cause blood acetate levels to rise to 20 times higher than normal. Chronic ...alcoholics always have high blood alcohol and would therefore always have high blood acetate levels, too. And if you think about people that combine sugars and alcohol rum and coke, for example it creates what we think is a perfect storm for the progression of cancers, with very high amounts of acetate being made from the high fructose corn syrup in the coke and alcohol in the rum. https://www.inquirer.com//sugar-alcohol-cancer-diet-tumor-

17.01.2022 Interesting findings, and useful as increasing the intake of vitamin C through diet and supplements is really easy. For top quality vitamin C and other supplements and dietary advice for staying well, please see me in clinic. We studied a large sample of older Norfolk residents and found that people with the highest amounts of vitamin C in their diet or blood had the greatest estimated skeletal muscle mass, compared to those with the lowest amounts. We are very excited by our findings as they suggest that dietary vitamin C is important for muscle health in older men and women and may be useful for preventing age-related muscle loss." This is particularly significant as Vitamin C is readily available in fruits and vegetables, or supplements, so improving intake of this vitamin is relatively straightforward."

16.01.2022 I could pick holes in this study, but instead I will leave it here, as a Christmas gift. Cheese and red wine can help with brain function. Merry Christmas! I was pleasantly surprised that our results suggest that responsibly eating cheese and drinking red wine daily are not just good for helping us cope with our current COVID-19 pandemic, but perhaps also dealing with an increasingly complex world that never seems to slow down,"

15.01.2022 I often get asked about physical symptoms, and dietary answers, which are overviewed in this article. There are times when it might be appropriate to supplement with vitamins or minerals, but not all at once and not necessarily long term. For help with reviewing your health, diet, and nutrient intake, please book an appointment with Eve.

15.01.2022 Feeling tired, despite having more time to sleep? It could from stress, during this unusual stage of our lives. Some useful points in this article, about not sleeping too much, keeping to regular bedtimes, and getting outside every day. If feelings of fatigue persist, talk with someone about it, it may be something simple like a dietary overload, or too much napping, but this is a good time to recharge the batteries, not create further problems through anxiety. For help with your diet, sleep or energy levels, please contact me in clinic.

15.01.2022 Don’t tell me that medical research is recognising what naturopaths have been saying for decades? Gut health and brain health and healthy ageing are all linked. And while their quest is to find a quick fix pill, the real answer is to eat real food, exercise regularly and supplement appropriately. And review all of these for your age. Please see me in clinic to discuss in more detail. ..there is increasing interest in our microbiomes and the connection between gut and brain health. This study is another intriguing piece of the puzzle highlighting the importance of lifestyle factors and diet. Importantly, it also points to new much-needed treatment opportunities for the diseases that cause dementia.

15.01.2022 Fully booked again this week, but I do have afternoon appointments available next week. You can book online: https://revive-your-health.cliniko.com/bookings#schedule

15.01.2022 I love this. I have been hiking more than usual over this year. Partly to counter the stress, and partly to access places normally busy with visitors. I am off on a three day hike in the Alps shortly, and love that feeling that I am at peace when out in nature.

14.01.2022 This is interesting, as a way of managing our perception of our anxiety or depression. If the underlying stress and anxiety is better handled, can the overriding response also be lessened? For help with supporting your response to stress and anxiety, please see me in clinic. Managing mental health can often benefit from a team response, with psychologist, counsellor and naturopath all providing support to allow the steps to be taken to change how you respond and thrive. ...Labels are something we internalize to define who we are and what we are capable of. All too often, labels limit us. And thats why reconsidering how we label anxiety, depression or ADHD is important. Does someone have depression, a medical disorder of their brain, or are they having a depressed adaptive response to adversity? Adversity is something we can overcome, whereas a mental disorder is something to be managed. The labels imply very different possibilities. See more

14.01.2022 If you are interested in starting a supported, easy to follow low carb eating program, please see me in clinic to discuss the Ultra Lite program. As this article explains, eating low carb can restore better control of your eating and energy, and allow you to relearn how to enjoy food which helps to keep you well.

13.01.2022 Breath is life. Learning how to breath well helps us to manage anxiety, sleep and wellness. For anyone recovering from any respiratory event, even COVID-19, good breathing technique can make a huge difference in regaining good health. One breathing practice popularized by Dr. Andrew Weil is called the 4-7-8 breath. This practice originated as a yoga breathing practice. In addition to slowing and deepening the breath, it helps reduce stress. In Weils words, This is the most powerful relaxation technique I know. It takes little time, requires no equipment, costs nothing. You must practice it twice a day. With practice, it lowers heart rate and blood pressure, improves GI function, promotes good sleep, and counteracts anxiety.

13.01.2022 Hay fever can be debilitating. For those who get seasonal allergic rhinitis, you are probably in the throes of the irritation. Whilst it may be habit to reach for the anti-histamines, depending upon how your allergy develops, it may be possible to treat more naturally, and to build up tolerance, if you start early enough. Please contact me in clinic to discuss your allergy concerns.

13.01.2022 Sitting is bad for you. Given generally that we have to be still to work, it is difficult to avoid some sedentary behaviour. What is more important is how you balance the sitting, lounging or any other version of sedentary form, with getting up and moving about.. Aim for daily exercise, walk, run or do a workout at home, but try to raise your heart rate and move your body for at least an hour every day. http://theconversation.com/if-sitting-at-a-desk-all-day-is-

13.01.2022 So it looks like immunity from the virus, either through having had it already, or getting vaccinated against it, will only protect to a degree. We will still be able to get it, but our body will mount a response to fight it, stopping it from developing to a dangerous stage. Which is great for healthy people, but as always, this benefit is less helpful for the aged or immune compromised. People who dont have a strong immune system cannot mount such a resilient fighting ca...pacity, and may still become sick. I would hope that we will learn to live with COVID-19, but it is essential that we maintain strong immune systems to allow the T and B cells to fight infection. There are an array of immune supportive herbal and vitamin based supplements which show effective help in this area, please see me in clinic to discuss your needs. "If the virus can replicate in the nose and mouth, it only needs to survive for a couple of days before it is ready to jump to another person. Unfortunately, it takes at least a couple of days for the bodys T and B cells to arm up. That gives it a (small) chance to spread. The virus could thus still circulate and infect people, even in a well-vaccinated population says Suhrbier." "Indeed, by reducing the severity of the infection via a vaccine, you could turn everyone into asymptomatic spreaders."

13.01.2022 Those with three or more of the indicated health conditions are three times more likely to become severely affected by COVID-19. In the UK, the push is to get tested and treated by doctors. I would suggest that naturopaths and nutritionists could fill a valuable role in helping people to change their diet, regain their health, supporting their immune system, and ensuring that the medical system is not overrun, trying to treat something for which they have insufficient training. It follows new research that shows people who have conditions commonly linked with heart disease also have a dramatically increased risk of death and hospitalisation from Covid-19. These conditions - or markers - include waist circumference, diabetes - even in its early stages - high blood pressure, and abnormal cholesterol levels.

12.01.2022 Brown fat has long been a sought after attribute. To date, the only method of developing more brown fat is through thermogenesis, the act of subjecting yourself to signifIcant cold on a regular occasion. Time to step up the cold shower routine.. ..the study revealed three more conditions for which people with brown fat have lower risk: hypertension, congestive heart failure, and coronary artery diseaselinks that had not been observed in previous studies.

12.01.2022 Dont forget to look after yourself this spring. Book in for stress management, weight loss, or just a review of your health habits.

11.01.2022 Eating a ketogenic diet shows improved immune response, in addition to reduction in weight affording greater ability to fight infection and reduce inflammation. For discussion of how changing to a low carb way of eating might help your health, please see me in clinic. Ketogenic diet markedly improved specific responses of human T lymphocytes in a balanced wayincluding T effector and T regulatory cell functionand increased the formation of memory T cells both in vitro and in vivo.

11.01.2022 Interesting analysis of how and why the virus affects us. And a suggestion to manage it includes taking vitamin D - what a good idea! A Supercomputer Analyzed Covid-19 and an Interesting New Theory Has Emerged https://elemental.medium.com/a-supercomputer-analyzed-covid

11.01.2022 It distresses me that an increase in the number of women getting breast cancer, can be in part attributed to avoidable lifestyle choices. Please take the choice to live a healthy life seriously. We cannot avoid cancer entirely just through good dietary and lifestyle choices, but it gives us a fighting chance. The increase in breast cancer cases is likely attributable to the effects of "marked changes in lifestyle, sociocultural contexts, and built environments" in many countries, says the IACR. These include delayed childbearing, having fewer children, increased rates of overweight and obesity, and decreasing levels of physical activity.

11.01.2022 Worth watching to hear the link between lower back pain and low vitamin D. Vitamin D plays an essential role in keeping us healthy and mobile, and as we age, it is not as easy to simply absorb enough through our skin. It is easy to supplement and worth adding to your routine, to help with muscle and bone health, as well as immunity. Please contact me in clinic to discuss your health needs. https://www.facebook.com/135796882846/posts/10159015328137847/?vh=e&extid=eMuzEji6HfooI8OR

10.01.2022 Concussion has potential to be more serious than it is previously understood, and long term management of maintaining circulation, good lymphatic clearance and lowered inflammation may be more important here than for those without TBI. Much of this can be supported through diet, lifestyle and high quality supplements, alongside monitoring of markers if health. For more discussion, please contact me in clinic. ..previously unknown consequence of TBI that can have long-lasting effects. When the brain swells, it presses against the skull; trapped in-between are tiny lymphatic vessels that clean the brain. This pressure on the vessels, the UVA researchers found, causes serious and long-lasting impairment of the brains ability to purge itself of toxins.

10.01.2022 I treat peri-menopause, menopause and the related issues with the stress/adrenal system in clinic with great success. There are some fabulous herbs effective for smoothing this journey, and it is important to review diet and lifestyle, to support this transition to this stage. Please see me in clinic to discuss your needs.

10.01.2022 Loving new health innovations. Apparently ear wax can be used to measure glucose and cortisol levels. Bring on the self managed technology for this level of testing!

10.01.2022 I have a few appointments left for this week, but the following two weeks are nearly fully booked. If you are thinking about a remedial massage or Naturopathic consultation, you can book online: https://revive-your-health.cliniko.com/bookings#service

09.01.2022 To change your health, you have to plan for tomorrow. For help with reviving your health, and creating a better plan for tomorrow, please book in to see me in clinic. Availability next week for Tuesday afternoon, Wed afternoon and Thur morning.

08.01.2022 Something to think about when you are thinking about a sweet snack.

07.01.2022 Great advice from Chris Kresser on foods to support healthy ageing of our skin. We cant stop the ageing process completely but it is possible to support good nutritional intake and supplement where needed, to enable healthy maintenance of our skin, and overall health. Please see me in clinic to discuss this further.

06.01.2022 I am not posting this article to criticise medical treatments. I am posting to note that whenever natural therapies are ridiculed, it is often over the lack of effective research showing high quality evidence. Which most medical treatments would not pass muster on either. What this article suggests, and I would wish it for herbal medicine also, is for better research. On average, most of the medical treatments whose effectiveness has been tested in systematic reviews are not supported by high-quality evidence. We need less, but better, research to address uncertainties so that we can become more confident that the treatments we take work.

06.01.2022 Lara’s posts and books are great for educating on the subtleties of how women work. There are a lot of mis truths and misunderstood aspects of our cycles, and it is so important to understand better your own monthly health. Please see me in clinic for further health discussion.

06.01.2022 Allergies are on the rise, and unfortunately Melbourne and Geelong are high with more than the average allergens to set us off. If you suffer from seasonal or constant allergies, consider coming in for discussion and testing to ensure you can feel more in control of your allergies and your health.

06.01.2022 TMJ headaches and teeth grinding are common, and more so in women. I love that they are concerned that its hormone related, and not just assuming that women take on more stress and that this is a symptom of that burden (my interpretation..). I do work on this area, within my scope of practice, and work with people to help with breaking the habit, prescribe magnesium and other stress management supplements, and refer to TMJ therapists as needed. Please discuss with me, for more information.

05.01.2022 The findings from this study reflect what I see in clinic regularly. Women have been fed so much mis-information about eating fat, that they struggle to get their heads around leaving their lifetime of low fat food. It’s so simple, but seems to go against what we have been taught: fat in food is not bad for our health or our weight. In fact, it will allow you to feel full, and to avoid the low fat food which is likely full of sugar.. Please see me in clinic to discuss this further. https://www.dietdoctor.com/men-lose-more-weight-on-a-low-ca

05.01.2022 Vitamin D is being shown to support increased immunity. This alongside healthy weight patterns is suggested to help improve response to viral load. A new study that looked at 216 people with COVID-19 found that 80 percent didn’t have adequate levels of vitamin D in their blood. The study also found that people who had both COVID-19 and lower vitamin D levels also had a higher number of inflammatory markers such as ferritin and D-dimer, which have been linked to poor COVID-19 outcomes.

05.01.2022 Checking in with everyone out there. RUOK? And do you need help with anything? Sometimes talking about things can help, and if I am not the person that you need, I can help you find that person. https://youtu.be/erHLP29tzPE

05.01.2022 The perception that we deserve a drink is dangerous, as the implied self care becomes correlated with being good to oneself. It might be worth considering the idea that we deserve to be healthy, and recognise the benefits of other methods of winding down from a stressful day. They found drinking one bottle a week increases the risk of cancer in women as much as smoking 10 cigarettes (equalling an increase in absolute cancer risk of 1.4 per cent).

03.01.2022 Has anyone else noticed that people are more likely to smile and say "good morning" whilst out walking? Is it due to the mask wearing, or is it because we are feeling isolated? Either way, I am enjoying the sense of community, and appreciating the opportunity to smile at strangers. https://reviveyourhealth.com.au//finding-purpose-in-smili/

03.01.2022 I find it interesting that humans are not naturally designed to digest milk, it appears to have evolved quite recently. As so many people are lactose intolerant, I tend to suggest that milk is not part of our diet, but to include natural yoghurt or hard cheese, as they are easier to breakdown. The study, published today in the journal Cell Biology, turned up a different surprise, too. None of the warriors had the genetic mutation that allows adults to digest milk, an ability known as lactase persistence thats common in many Europeans.

02.01.2022 Berry season! Blueberries are a great treat and they are super good for you so consider adding to your diet while they are easy to obtain. Blueberries are a good sources of fibre, vitamin C, vitamin K and manganese. They are high in antioxidants (beaten by kidney beans, but arent as tasty to snack on). Their real "superness" comes from the thing that gives them their bluey/purply colouring, called anthocyanidins, which has anti-inflammatory properties.... Blueberries improve blood flow and trials have shown positive benefits for your brain and heart. See more

02.01.2022 Another article about the increased risk of being overweight and dying from COVID-19. In both the US and the UK, they can see that the risk increases as the weight increases into obesity. This is also concerning for other diseases. It is possible to change this risk and improve health, by adopting a low carb real food diet. For help with this and other aspects of good health, please book in for a Naturopathic consultation with me. https://www.sciencemag.org//why-covid-19-more-deadly-peopl#
