23.01.2022 The endurance of the human spirit. I am routinely humbled when I see the strength and resilience my clients share with me. Sometimes I too can become overwhelmed with everything life asks of me, but then I am quickly grounded and reminded of those who share their lives with me. The human spirit can not only endure and survive but it can also grow, and thrive. I have seen it, time and time again. (Photo - I took it driving through Cann River on my way to NSW in June 2020 pre-Vic/NSW border closure. Whilst I could see the devastation brought by the fires, plant life had started to regenerate. So too the potential for the human spirit after adversity). #rmbpsychology #melbournepsychologist #firstreponders #ptsd #cptsd #posttraumaticgrowth #trauma #police #ambulance #healingispossible #firefighters #frontlineworkers

22.01.2022 As humans, our survival has been dependent on our perceptions of safety and threat, with all of our senses tuned into focus on this one objective. Lies and untruths, even spoken in a calm voice, will be interpreted as threats to move away from. There is safety in truth no matter how it is delivered. #RMBpsychology #MelbournePsychologist #Truth #calm #safe #candor

21.01.2022 An R U Ok? message from colleague and dear friend who has encapsulated all there is to say about "R U Ok?". (Which in my book is asked everyday - not once every 364 days !!!). Thanks Tess, love your work! #ruok #ruokday #reachout #askforhelp #reachin #lookafteryourself #lookaftereachother #itsoktonotbeok #melbournepsychologist #rmbpsychology

21.01.2022 Do you stop and reflect to notice patterns in your life? Patterns in the way you communicate with your partner, your children? Perhaps the way you communicate with colleagues? What patterns have you noticed in your relationships? Are you attracted to a particular type of personality? I'm curious if you pause and reflect, what is it that you notice? Children who have grown up not knowing safety look to others to provide safety in their environment. For others though, the feeli...ng of safety, even in adulthood, can feel so foreign and threatening they choose relationships where the abuse continues. Abuse is normal and safety is foreign and threatening. It doesn't have to be. When we repair our nervous system, when we learn to trust ourselves and the choices we make, when we learn what safety feels like in our body and how we can not only cope with it but cultivate it, we begin to heal. When we begin to repair, we begin to heal. #RMBpsyhcology #melbournepsychologist #firstreponders #ptsd #cptsd #ptg #trauma #police #ambulance #healingispossible

20.01.2022 Trying to help others, at times, can be a distraction that enables us to momentarily forget about our own pain and hurt. #rmbpsyhcology #melbournepsychologist #firstreponders #ptsd #cptsd #posttraumaticgrowth #trauma #police #ambulance #healingispossible #firefighters #frontlineworkers

20.01.2022 Most of us have heard the term 'broken' or may refer to themselves as such. They see themselves as something other than whole, something other than 'normal' whatever that is. Life is complex yet when we add, abuse, neglect, abandonment, trauma, betrayal, and stress the complexities of life seem unbearable. What most of us can't see, especially when we are surrounded in darkness, is that we are survivors and that the strength we have used to endure is the strength we need 'see' again, and tap into to change that darkness into color. Recovery from psychological injury is very possible. #RMBpsyhcology #melbournepsychologist #firstreponders #ptsd #cptsd #ptg #trauma #police #ambulance #healingispossible

20.01.2022 So too is sorry. Each of these words can have a profound effect on the people who should hear them and the person who said them sincerely. It is much easier to say these words than to hold the frustration, anger, and discomfort within. Simple words can enrich our lives. #RMBpsychology #MelbournePsychologist #enrich #learn #sincere #words

19.01.2022 We are all a little stressed this time of year so please let's all slow it down a bit, pause, reflect and notice what is really important in our lives. #rmbpsychology #melbournepsychologist #firstreponders #ptsd #cptsd #posttraumaticgrowth #trauma #police #ambulance #healingispossible #firefighters #frontlineworkers

19.01.2022 It was said a long time ago, and yet it still feels so timely. If you and I don't affect change, who will? #rmbpsychology #melbournepsychologist #firstreponders #ptsd #cptsd #posttraumaticgrowth #trauma #police #ambulance #healingispossible #firefighters #frontlineworkers

18.01.2022 Our senses collect information to help us process both our internal and external worlds. Sensory information is processed by the brain where meaning and context are attributed to the information. The meaning forms the basis of our beliefs, and those beliefs help determine our thoughts. The sensory input from our body has a major role in determining the content of our thoughts. We may be surrounded in safety, but our mind cannot comprehend that after years of abuse and as such, discounts the images of safety and continues to scan the environment for danger. What do your eyes see? What does your mind interpret you are seeing? Safety or danger? #RMBpsychology #melbournepsychologist #firstreponders #ptsd #cptsd #ptg #trauma #healingispossible

17.01.2022 There is so much to be personally gained from failure, more so than from the status quo. #RMBPsychology #melbournepsychologist #tryagain #youcan

16.01.2022 We look to these people for help when we are overwhelmed by the situation when there is danger, chaos, and trauma. They deal with our mess and the things that we can't, they put their lives and personal safety on the line in service to our communities, for us. No one forces them to do this but everyone expects this of them. They might not always get things right as they battle through unique, stressful, and traumatizing events; running away is NOT and an option for them. T...hese people aren't superhuman, they are ordinary people who confront extraordinary situations; their work makes it inevitable that mistakes will happen and that they will get physically injured and suffer mental injuries. Their years of dedication to our safety and security will erode their resilience and mental health...they could never have known this before they signed up, but they did and most have stayed. Who helps these helpers when they need help themselves? We can't thank them enough. For those who can't, don't worry, they will still be there when you need them too. #RMBPsychology #frontliner #mentalhealth #safety #melbournepsychologist

10.01.2022 Relationships are critical to mental health and wellbeing. Early years they help tune your perception, and they help you regulate yourself. #rmbpsyhcology #melbournepsychologist #firstreponders #ptsd #cptsd #ptg #trauma #police #ambulance #healingispossible

09.01.2022 Okay, granted the year we all envisaged is not the year we could have possibly imagined happening. Far too surreal even for our imaginations. Despite this, it is still a year none the less filled with days in a week, and weeks in a month. A global pandemic is not what I would call an adventure but I hope it is a once in a lifetime event. After months of lockdown, strict stage 4 lockdowns in Melbourne, Victoria where it often feels incredibly oppressive and claustrophobic, I a...lso have been privileged to witness humanity in full strength. People reaching out to strangers starting conversations and connecting, children coming outdoors and riding bikes, skateboards, and scooters - anything that gives them the freedom to move on the footpath in front of their homes.Families trying to cope as best they can. I'm not saying it's been easy, it hasn't for me and I 'should' know. As I mental health clinician, I too am human as are the people I care about. We aren't perfect, perfection doesn't exist. I do need to be around good energy. I need to consciously choose to create good energy for myself and others. I need to connect with people. I need to learn new things. I need to grow. What have you discovered in the last few months that you need? #rmbpsyhcology #melbournepsychologist #firstreponders #ptsd #cptsd #posttraumaticgrowth #trauma #police #ambulance #healingispossible #firefighters #frontlineworkers

09.01.2022 Are you brave enough to tell someone you love them? Are you brave enough to tell yourself? #rmbpsychology #melbournepsychologist #firstreponders #ptsd #cptsd #posttraumaticgrowth #trauma #police #ambulance #healingispossible #firefighters #frontlineworkers

09.01.2022 What does feeling unappreciated (or not good enough) feel like? Think about the last time that happened. How did you feel....angry, sad, depleted, frustrated. I bet you could feel your temperature rising, heart beating faster, deeper breathing, muscles tensing as stress hormones were being released, but you had to hold all of that in. Now how does being appreciated feel, the different emotions make you feel safe and endorphins are released. Which would you rather have more of? #RMBpsychology #MelbournePsychologist #appreciate #grateful #feels #thoughts

09.01.2022 As humans, we also have a vision that the grass is greener on the other side. It's not, the grass is greener whenever you put your attention and intention and give it the time and resources it needs. If u water and put fertilizer on your grass, it too will look fabulously green. Neglect your lawn and it will show you pretty quickly what neglect looks like. I'm not saying humans are like grass, but I think you get the idea. #rmbpsychology #melbournepsychologist #firstreponders #ptsd #cptsd #posttraumaticgrowth #trauma #police #ambulance #healingispossible #firefighters #frontlineworkers

06.01.2022 The first step always feels the most overwhelming and each step may bring up its own challenges but then again, what is to be gained by standing still and in one spot forever? #rmbpsychology #melbournepsychologist #firstreponders #ptsd #cptsd #posttraumaticgrowth #trauma #police #ambulance #healingispossible #firefighters #frontlineworkers

04.01.2022 The gifts of Christmas that keep on giving. I hope you have these under your Christmas tree! #rmbpsychology #melbournepsychologist #firstreponders #ptsd #cptsd #posttraumaticgrowth #trauma #police #ambulance #healingispossible #firefighters #frontlineworkers

04.01.2022 This is also true of life's stressors and emotional trauma. Our experience of trauma isn't in the event but in how our bodies and brains react to it. If we have past trauma, don't have appropriate coping and self-soothing skills, the resilience or the adaptive abilities to overcome adversity, our mental health, and physical well being will be compromised. Adversity and our response to it are woven into our life's tapestry of experience, beliefs, and personal growth. #RMBpsychology #MelbournePsychologist #life #ability #growth #development
