The Australian War Memorial says Captain John Needham, one of few ...opticians who appear in the #WW1 ANZAC records, was a father and practising optometrist/refractionist in Richmond, Victoria, who left his business to serve in Gallipoli and France and was recommended for the Military Cross for gallantry at Pozieres. Optician Corporal Gordon Heathcote from Kew was in the Australian Army Machine Gun Corps and was killed in action in Belgium in 1917; South Melbourne optician Lt George Stanley McIlroy fought at Pozieres and was awarded the Military Cross, and jeweller-optician Lt Arthur Douglas Hogan from Lewisham, NSW, was killed in action at Passchendaele in 1917 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres.
