25.01.2022 Our guest speaker tonight was Brian Guest, the WA Chairman of the Interplast Project. Brian explained that the Interplast project, a collaboration between Rotary Australia and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, has been running since 1983. Its mission is to send teams of volunteer plastic and reconstructive surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and allied health professionals to provide life-changing surgery and health professional training in 17 countries across the Asia... Pacific region. In 2019 they ran 79 programs across the Asia Pacific. They took all their own equipment with them which was a huge logistical exercise but was required due to the lack of facilities in the countries they were travelling to. They have only recently started travelling to Mongolia and sent two teams there last year. COVID-19 has put a hold on their trips but they have continued their training and have used Zoom to assist local surgeons when they were operating. See more

18.01.2022 Our guest speaker tonight was Jane Davies, the Business Development Manager at Bridging the Gap. Jane explained that Bridging the Gap has been part of our local community for many years providing a range of Federal and State funded programs that deliver employment, career development and training services through its partnerships with local community based organisations across the Perth to Peel region. Jane went on to outline their latest project which is Containers for Chan...ge. The Rockingham Rotary Market is now a community partner in this project which seeks to increase recycling and reduce the number of drink containers that litter our environment in Western Australia. Jane stated that this new project has provided Bridging the Gap with a secure funding stream that also helps the protect the environment at the same time If new community partners are interested, making change is easy Sign up for a Scheme ID, collect eligible containers, return your eligible containers to Bridging The Gap’s Containers for Change Refund Point in Port Kennedy, and claim your refund. You have the option to donate your 10c per container refund to a community group, charity or school of your choice. If you are a business, Containers for Change can deliver and pickup from your collection point. https://www.facebook.com/BTGContainersforChange/ See more

17.01.2022 Our guest speaker this week was Tyler Nicholls who has recently became a member of our club. We were treated to a pictorial presentation of her life which started in Bunbury in 1993. It was a moving and frank presentation that showed Tyler was determined to succeed under difficult circumstances. Tyler was previously a member of the South Bunbury Rotary club where she was their treasurer for two years. She graduated from Curtin University in 2013 and has recently completed her last unit to become a CPA. On a lighter note it appears no one will be offering to dog sit her fussy, high maintenance dog, Ruwfus, as he requires a very high standard of care.

17.01.2022 We started our Lift the Lid on Mental Illness campaign on Sunday at the Rockingham Rotary Market and then at our Monday night meeting we continued on with a presentation by Taryn Harvey and Sarah Quinton from the WA Association for Mental Health. Taryn and Sarah explained how mental health services were better delivered at the community level than in an acute hospital setting as was outlined in the Better Choices, Better Lives program. They went on to explain how community based programs were more cost effective and would offer people suffering from mental health issues more options on a pathway back to a healthy and productive life. The Rotary Club of Rockingham donated $2000 to the Rotary Lift the Lid campaign.

15.01.2022 Congratulations to the Rotary Club of Rockingham on receiving a platinum Rotary Citation for 2019-20. All members of the club should be proud of their efforts in achieving the goals required to get a platinum citation.

15.01.2022 Our guest speakers tonight were Monique Barker and Suzy Stanford and they talked about how the Fitzroy River, Western Australia’s largest river, stretching over 700km from the East Kimberley to the coast at King Sound is under threat from large scale development in its catchment. The Fitzroy River has a National Heritage listing for its outstanding cultural values and supports a huge array of wildlife, including 18 species of fish found nowhere else in the world. It is a c...ritical breeding ground and nursery for the critically endangered Freshwater Sawfish. Life on the River is unpredictable. When it rains, floods bring wetlands to life and restore the River. Between floods the river often stops flowing and animals hang on in permanent pools fed by underground water. In some years there are big floods, in other years there is almost no rain. There are irrigation projects seeking to take water from the Fitzroy River including for 325 Gigalitres and another for 50 Gigalitres. In comparison, the whole of Perth and Southwest WA uses just over 200 GL of water each year. It is feared this level of irrigation will decimate the Fitzroy River and leave it in a similar condition to the Murray-Darling catchment. Monique and Suzy were looking for support in protecting this unique ecosystem. Rotarians can find out more by going to https://www.likenowhereelse.org.au/ See more

03.01.2022 Our guest speaker tonight was six year old Harper who is a community fundraiser for Telethon. Her journey started when one of her friends became ill with cancer and she lost all her long hair from the treatment. Harper told her mum that she’d like to raise money for Telethon and this was the start of her project making bows and scrunchies. In October last year she was asked to be on Telethon to present the $1600 she had raised. She hopes to raise the same amount of money this year. You can read more about her story on her Facebook page Harpers Helping Hand.
