25.01.2022 My little cover crop is coming up beautifully. The barley has sprinted away first - its big seed helping it to get a good start. Clover is just starting to germinate. We cultivated and planted every second row through the orchard, trying to remove and outcompete the weedy paspalum and bring some life and organic matter back into the soils. In other rows Im trying grazing wheat plus clover and rye-corn plus clover. Im hoping to be able to get two cuts of mulch to go und...er the tree line curious to see which of the cereals handle it best. Dandelions and clover are coming back in the other rows theyll be good for the bees. Its so good to see life again after the big dry (my drip irrigation is only in the treeline and the interrows were awfully dry in the drought). Its so exciting to finally have enough rain to give this cover crop a go. Todays rain is ideal. #covercrop #afterthedrought #rainbringslife #regenerativeagriculture #soilhealth #knowyourfarmer #mudgeeregion #autumn

23.01.2022 LEST WE FORGET Just as the mist rose and the sky turned gold at dawn at our front gate the cockatoos rose a chorus like a round of applause in rememberence. On this unusual ANZAC day our thoughts are especially with the serving men and women and veterans whose day would usually be filled with ceremony, march and gatherings. We hope they enjoy the opportunity to commemorate with their loved ones (at home or by phone/web) and are not lonely today. In our thoughts.... Cherries originated in Turkey and apparently were spread by Roman soldiers ... so today it seems approprate for me to try to make a wreath of cherry branches. #standatdawn

23.01.2022 Watering in some new cherry trees last weekend. We planted in some gaps in the Rons/Vans block with new varieties to help pollination, planted some Morello sour cherries and Sandra Rose cherries in a new block and transplanted a few young trees that had done it tough in the drought. Hoping the kangaroos leave them alone! Our new apricot trees from a different nursery had gone missing in action but theyre suddenly arriving tomorrow so its a race now to get them in before bud burst! #plantingtime #familyfarm #newtrees #patience #mudgeeregion #cherrygrower

21.01.2022 On such a beautiful sunny autumn afternoon its tempting to quit pruning for a stroll through this neighbours Di Lusso Winery vineyard and olive grove for pizza and sangiovese. Sounds idyllic ... our boys they think its so much more fun to drive their buggy round the back to get pizza #localasitgets #covidreinvention #mudgeeregion

21.01.2022 Not long to go now . Be sure to book for cherry picking. These looked so good I couldn’t resist a taste. Ughh now my mouth has that bitter-sour of under ripe cherry. With this variety we need to wait until it’s near black before it’s sweet and ready. Patience!

18.01.2022 Our cherries and smoking woods bundled up in delish local hampers. Dont they look great?

18.01.2022 The orchard in its winter style. I really love the coppery stems and the buds curling up to overwinter. Had a few calls over the weekend from visitors asking to come fruit picking .... the trees are going dormant as they work on next summers while were shaping them with some pruning. Can you spot the big morning moon in this pic? The fogs just rolled back in now to hide it again. Happy long weekend! .#winter #orchard #mudgeeregion #pickyourown #summerfruit #unearthcentralnsw

And it means you can be sure we grow your cherries to export standard ... were sure youll agree the proof is in the taste Just a few cherry blossoms bursting out... #cherries #export #local #australiangrown #pickyourown #mudgeeregion

15.01.2022 POACHED RHUBARB AND Years ago I clipped out of the Good Weekend Magazine a recipe for poached rhubarb. David Herbert described how his friend taught him to cook rhubarb and I havent found a better recipe since. I completely agreed and have cooked rhubarb this way since ... until this week. In a bit of a rush to get the rhubarb on I spied a jar of my Cherries in Cinnamon & Orange and thought I could shortcut making the sugar syrup. I simply cut the rhubarb into 2-3 cm... lengths, poured on the syrup from the jar of cherries and popped it in the oven. While we ate dinner the rhubarb poached away in the cherry syrup. Once done, I stirred in the cherries and we had it over ice-cream. Oh my! So much flavour and that deliciously ruby red colour. I cant imagine cooking rhubarb any other way again. On this fabulously cool, drizzly day we had our poached rhubarb and cherries on porridge for our homeschooling recess (for my sanity our whole family are rostered for meals during isolation .. I was on morning tea and cant rival the boys cakes!). Ultimate comfort food. 13.01.2022 First run of the new fertigation unit to put out liquid calcium through the irrigation lines. Calcium helps feed early fruit development to grow great . Bringing the fertigation up here closer to the orchard blocks means we can do shorter, more targeted fertiliser applications through the drip irrigation. A trace element nutrient mix has also been sprayed onto the buds, giving them every chance to make cherries. . #cherries #greatcherries #nutrition #pickyourown #familyfarm #fertigation #agronomy #orchard #mudgeeregion

09.01.2022 Moody afternoon light over the pruned orchard. . Pruning is super important to shape trees to let in the light, to cut out some fruit bud to grow bigger cherries and to keep the trees short to make it easier for you to pick. Done by hand, its our biggest single cost outside of harvest. Ive tried mechanical pruning before to save on time but It needs the shaping by hand. . #afternoonlight #Cherries #pickyourown #pruning #Orchard #Australiangrown #mudgeeregion

09.01.2022 A little mid week birthday lunch for the big Rothy. Pickled cherries with our favourite High Valley Cheese Co. - Cearphilly smoked with our cherry wood and the Mudgee Rouge - @Bonnie View Produce tomato relish and a sourdough I made with some wheat Rothy and his team grew blended with rye. The pip pot is from la Paloma pottery at Hill End - Its just perfect for our pickled cherries. #cheesesandwich #localproduce #rothwood #springlunch #mudgeeregion

09.01.2022 Usually Im a minimum tillage kinda gal but now Im declaring full war on paspalum (a clump forming grass weed) and working to rebuild our soils after the long drought and many years under orchard and vineyard. Weve cultivated every second row through the orchard to cut out the paspalum and then planted a mix of clover and winter cereal. The idea is for this to build up some organic matter in the soil, grow a mulch and outsmart those thirsty weeds. Come spring well slash ...down the cereals to mulch under the trees - Im not looking to grow it through for grain, its purely for our soils. Hopefully the clover will fix some nitrogen and give flowers for the bees. Im expecting to need to redo these same rows next season to get a win our #waronweeds. Then I can seed a mix of plants to help our soils, give flowers for the bees and habitat for beneficial insects. If this works and the weather cooperates well then tackle every other row. Ive been itching to get this started but with such dry seasons and no irrigation in the inter-row it needed to wait for rain. Amazingly after some wonderful autumn rains we had to wait until the ground dried out enough! Rain forecast this week and warm soils should be just perfect to get our little cover crop off to a flying start. Our little 4 ha cereal crop is so tiny compared to our broadacre friends but super exciting for our orchard health. See more

08.01.2022 MALCOLM ROTH. 1938-2020 Today we farewelled a very special cousin and friend. An enthusiastic community volunteer Malcolm is something of a Mudgee legend. He was also the holder of so many of our familys stories. Malcolm carried on the family tradition growing grapes for his Westcourt Wines alongside his sheep and seed oats.... Well miss the stories, the yarns and that smile that would light up his eyes. All our thoughts to Malcolms family and friends as we remember a life well lived. This picture was at our orchard when Malcolm was telling me stories of the orchard the Roths had at Craigmoor many years ago. Lets raise a glass ... of Westcourt Wine

08.01.2022 After the weekends morning frosts and warm days our flowering prunus have burst into bloom on the southern side. The early blossom on these trees helps attract some local bees before cherry blossom comes later this month. Getting closer to the busiest time of the year

07.01.2022 Cherry pitters are really handy if you want to cook, freeze, feed cherries to toddlers, use cherries in salads or just don’t like the pips. We have all types - I prefer the simple single pitter, our boys like the 4 in one (bigger is better?). The cherry chomper was really great when our kids were toddlers - they had fun using it themselves. If you pit be sure to use, sugar, lemon dip or freeze quickly - cherries oxidise very quickly once cut. Our boys will have a big pitti...ng session to bag and freeze their cherry supply for the year. The most important is pitting for our Danish cherry sauce ( kirsebær sovs) for Christmas. Last year we were so short on cherries we didn’t get many into the freezer, and missed our cherry smoothies and cherry clafoutis over the winter (yes the French might be horrified that we eat their summer dessert in winter but it’s so good and so easy with a bag of cherries ready pipped!). Luckily we had some in vacola jars from the year before. Cherry / Olive pitters are a little hard to find this year so look early, or some use a chopstick over a stubby or a hairpin. #cherrypitter #pickyourown #preservetheharvest #keepers #mudgeeregion

07.01.2022 It’s the new normal of 2020 ... be sure to book ahead if you plan to visit. . I was asked today if I guarantee cherries when you book ... if you can guarantee the weather I’ll guarantee the cherries!! Balmy, mild days under 30 deg C and no stirms or rain please ... This weather is a rollercoaster. We’ve plenty of cherries this season and we’re doing all we can to get them through this heat. The dates we have open for bookings are our most reliable for great cherries, the cherries are looking the best we’ve seen in years . This is Mudgee 2020 ... if you don’t book we can’t guarantee entry! #pickyourown #weather #mudgeeregion

04.01.2022 How old might this spreader be? All we know is that it was already old when our family bought it around 40 years ago from Mr Triggs. No motor - the chains off the axle set it spinning when its pulled forward ... originally that may have been behind a horse? I imagine it wouldve been in its prime when superphosphate was a new idea to Improve pastures. We dont usually broadcast fertiliser (we target the treeline with banding, fertigation or foliar) but wanted to sprea...d some prilled gypsum for the new planting and fertiliser for a hungry looking section of the cover crop. We pulled this old girl out of the shed and it worked a treat! Got to love simple machinery ... after 25 years unused in the shed it only needed a quick clean & air in the tyres to be up and spinning! Little ripper ... and a fun school holiday activity too! Would love to hear any thoughts on what its vintage might be? . #farmmachinery #vintage #Vintagefarmmachinery #superspreader #soils #nomotor #mudgeeregion #familyfarm #australiangrown #orchard @ Roth Family Orchard See more

01.01.2022 David Payne has captured some magical images of the little old church on our orchard. This moody black and white image caught my eye - the calm before the storm. From the road all seems quiet, nestled behind the neighbours vineyard - then season hits late November and its humming along at a frantic pace when we open the orchard to visitors. These hot air balloons (swipe to next pic) gave a burst of colour to our pruning last year. All that looking upwards was such fun with the balloons overhead each morning. The church was built in Moolarben, moved to Ulan as a church and then we brought it here to its third home. #cherryorchard #oldchurches #unearthcentralnsw #holidayherethisyear #mudgeeregion #balloonsaloft #pickyourownfarm #familyfarm @ Roth Family Orchard
