21.01.2022 Who took these exams? RAD Exams Throwback: New Grades Syllabus (1991-2008-2014) This syllabus presented a fresh approach with an emphasis on dance and the joy of movement. Free movement exercises were introduced to develop relaxation and freedom of expression in class while Character steps and dances were incorporated to foster a sense of rhythm.... 20.01.2022 Congratulations to American Ballet Theatre, choreographer Christopher Rudd and dancers Calvin Royal III and João Menegussi for creating history in the company's first all-male pas de deux and balletic love story - 'Touché'. What a magnificent step forward for the art form.
18.01.2022 This Remembrance Day we pause and take a moment to think about all those who have sacrificed in service of their country. We also think back to our Shaping Bodies, Shaping Minds conference at the beginning of the year where Richard Maher, at the time a Doctor of Creative Industries candidate at QUT (Queensland University of Technology) and Army Aviation Officer with 32 years service, spoke of his research into the connection between dance and Quality of Life improvements in Australian Combat Veterans with a history of trauma related psychological injuries. Through Captain Maher we were introduced to the work of Exit12 Dance Company and the work of a former US Marine and professional dancer Roman Baca who is working with Veterans and their families through dance. See Exit 12's award winning documentary below.
16.01.2022 What a lovely tribute from a former student and now Principal dancer with the Royal Ballet - Steven McRae for Hilary Kaplan one of our FRAD recipients announced yesterday. Between Robyn, Joy and Hilary there are many wonderful dancers out there spreading joy.

15.01.2022 Vale Ruth Lane The Academy is saddened to hear of the passing of Ruth Lane yesterday after a battle with cancer. Ruth was a long-standing RAD Registered Teacher and tutor for our Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies Programme. Her enthusiasm and energy were only matched by her passion for the colour green! She was instrumental in guiding so many emerging new teachers through their studies, alongside teaching thousands of her own students in Queensland. Her star will no doubt shine the brightest in the sky thanks to her sparkle. Photo: Ruth Lane left with Pam Keir.

13.01.2022 Once a very promising cricketer, Alexander Campbell chose to pursue a career in ballet instead and thank goodness he did! This stunning duet featuring the Australian Principal Dancer with The Royal Ballet is a reminder to boys out there that when your love of sport and ballet collide and compete for your time, not to give up on your passion for dance! #Inspirationforballetboys
11.01.2022 Did you take exams in this era? RAD Exams Throwback: Dance Education Syllabus (1974-1991/93) This syllabus stressed the importance of reference to the historical background of ballet, and the integration of music with dance. For instance, the classical part of the syllabus emphasised the qualities of the Russian school and aligned with the Romantic period of ballet.... 11.01.2022 Now that we're back on track with exams across many parts of the country (fingers crossed not long now VIC!) we thought we'd share a little flashback fun for you. Let us know if you remember any of these... RAD Exams Throwback: Ballet in Education Syllabus (1946-1968) This was designed to provide the child with a basic vocabulary of steps while encouraging self-expression and musicality. Primary, mime and national and period dances were introduced for the first time.

06.01.2022 It is our absolute pleasure to announce that three remarkable Australian Examiners and Teachers have been acknowledged with a very special award. Robyn Croft, Hilary Kaplan and Joy Ransley will each receive an Honorary Fellowship of The Royal Academy of Dance (FRAD) in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the art of dance and exceptionally meritorious service to the Academy. RAD Australia National Director Rebecca Taylor said: Australians should be extremely prou...d to have such dedicated teachers and examiners as Robyn, Hilary and Joy. Their combined hours of service, dedication and support for the Academy are immeasurable. They are a credit to the Academy and thousands of dancers have benefited from their expertise over the years. It is my pleasure to count them amongst a Fellowship of truly remarkable individuals and I congratulate them each on their many achievements. 05.01.2022 Do you remember this? RAD Exams Throwback: Fonteyn (Children’s) Examinations Syllabus (1968-1991) The Fonteyn syllabus removed unnecessary attention to technical details in favour of concentrating on the essentials of position and placement. Mimes and historical deportment were also eliminated.... Photo: A student from Madeleine Sharp’s school demonstrates the ‘Washing Day Dance’ in 1972
04.01.2022 "For many people, the isolation and heightened attention to contagion of the past several months has been a shocking detour from their routines. For some of us with disabilities or chronic illnesses (CI), however, the able-bodied world is beginning to meet us where we are." Online classes have meant greater access, more variety and a level playing field for dancers with a disability or chronic illness. Definitely something to bear in mind when planning for a post-pandemic dance programme.
03.01.2022 This year we've heard so many sad stories about the state of the arts as a result of the impact of COVID-19 so its heartening to read of one dancer's career just beginning amid face masks, social distancing and theatre closures.
03.01.2022 What a wonderful career to date our Vice President David McAllister AM has had. We are so grateful to have his support and wish him well as he stands down as Artistic Director of The Australian Ballet this year. We look forward to seeing where his career takes him next....

02.01.2022 At the beginning of the year, we were excited to be hosting the 2020 Joan and Monica Halliday OAM FRAD Awards and the Isobel Anderson Awards in Sydney. Students performed beautifully throughout the heats and semi-finals. Unfortunately just as we were about to hold the final, the nation was sent into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now 9 months later we are thrilled to be giving those dedicated students the opportunity to compete in the finals. The event will look somew...hat different on 29 November as we manage COVID safety protocols but we are delighted that whilst COVID-19 did put a hold on this final stage, it did not derail the opportunity for the students to shine. We hope you will join us in wishing the candidates all the very best as they demonstrate their determination, commitment, and talent by taking part in the final. Special thanks to our sponsor Bloch Dance Australia for their ongoing support in a very difficult year for businesses.
02.01.2022 Marta González is a former Prima Ballerina who now lives with Alzheimers. This is the moment she is played Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and her body remembers. Such an incredibly beautiful and touching moment. Once a dancer, always a dancer
