25.01.2022 Going out with a final burst of colour, will finish dismantling the garden next week.

24.01.2022 Great initiative. Have had a look at the Connect garden and they are doing great work with a small crew. Community gardens are great and you will get a blast out of joining in. ( plus lots of healthy chemical free food!!)

24.01.2022 As you all know flame trees (brachychitons) have a wonderful large seed pod,if you can beat the insects and get past the prickly hairs the fruit surrounding the seeds is delicious,if you grab the seeds and roast them in a popcorn maker before grinding they make an acceptable ersatz coffee. But sadly we will have none of this for sale at the street stall in the Aldi walkway tomorrow, Saturday, from 8-12, but we will have veggies, herbs, plants, seedlings, plus great preserves and cordials. Great fresh chemical free produce grown locally.

22.01.2022 Good crop of galangal and turmeric in the home garden. Life will get a little spicier!!

22.01.2022 Essential ingredients when making new beds. Coffee grounds from local coffee shops, hay stable sweepings from a Deagon stables. Add these 2 to self made compost, throw in a bit of worm juice on your new plantings and a couple of months later we will have crops to sell at our street stall which is on this Saturday morning 26th, at the Aldi walkway in Sandgate.see you there.

21.01.2022 Mulch fork, expensive but by far the best tool tor turning over beds with the advantage of not cutting your earthworms in half

21.01.2022 10 kg of nice new potatoes from the verge. Mixture of Dutch creams and sebagoes. Thanks to sweetie pie for help with the cropping.

19.01.2022 Our friend Al is a gardener who delights in the joys of growing. He also dontes a lot of seeds etc to the community garden.

15.01.2022 Hi gardeners, it is time to revisit the previous proposal to put a community garden in Hutchison park in front of the railway station. Council have inspected the proposed area and our next step is to form a steering committee to push it through, it won’t be a very speedy process as council now do contamination investigations as they did recently at Green P ( now Gumbuya ). I will print up some of the attached flyers and perhaps we can get a couple of volunteers to deliver them. We are also looking at a couple of sites in Brighton, originally Apex park but that is a bit small. Let me know what you think of Brighton Health campus as a site and we will start the ball rolling. Any suggestions for other sites will be well received.

14.01.2022 Worm farm cleaning and feeding day, lots of happy worms. Lots of worm juice and castings.

12.01.2022 Dropped a few sunflower petals on the way in to set up for our street stall in Aldi walkway this morning 8-12. Lots of plants, seedlings, spuds, veggies and preserves and cordial. And a bonus icee the road with Sandgate Village Markets. Joint is jumpin’ this morning, come on down.

12.01.2022 A very interesting article in the Guardian which details the results of unsafe farming practices. Wild animals, farm animals, toxic chemicals and destruction of native habitat are all making the human race very very unhealthy. This is why chemical free food grown in the suburbs can help to turn this around, join a community garden today.

12.01.2022 So pulled the heirloom tomatoes out ( thanks Michael Stillman, they were fab) and spent the afternoon turning over the bed and adding more organic material. S...o what do old socialists do following an afternoon of hard labour. They head to Eclectea for a Chardonnay as a reward. One of the joys of gardening. See more

12.01.2022 Next on the menu, Lilly pilly jelly!! Yay.

11.01.2022 Cherie Gorringe conducts a class on sugar to PCYC vacation care kids, back in 2014. We will soon be restarting workshops at the newly renamed Kempster St Gumbuya garden. Watch this space.

09.01.2022 Alpinias ( native ginger) looking good and looks like a good hit rate on the kohlrabi.

09.01.2022 Herb awareness day at the Peace Centre, Albion. A very big crowd and some inspirational speakers. The stalls were more varied than usual in response to an inc...reased interest in growing your ownproduce. Always a good place to buy some cheap organic seeds at the BOGI shop. Open till 3. We remember that our late friend Lesley Griffin was a staunch member and supporter of the Herb Society. See more

08.01.2022 Chocolate habaneros, a chilli much sought after by connoisseurs and natural health practitioners, quite apart from its wonderful cooking attributes. This one is flourishing on Theresa’s plot at Gumbuya community garden, following some tender loving care from Marian.

08.01.2022 Green P farm, looking really good. The amount of food grown here is quite amazing. It shows that it is possible to be sustainable by growing large quantities of... food in the suburbs. All the more reason why the Racecourse redevelopment must include social enterprise market gardens and a composting hub. It is not only achievable it is very very urgent that we take action, the future expects it. See more

07.01.2022 Pulled out the rosellas at the verge today. The stems dry out pretty quick so good to compost. These have been the most productive crop of rosellas we have had ...in 10 years, with no less than 5 pickings ( normally 3) Meg will be making her last batch of rosella jam shortly so PM me for purchase details. Will have plenty of seeds for planting and in 3 months it all starts again. See more

06.01.2022 There is a certain magic when a child meets a garden. And especially when that garden looks as welcoming as our Gumbuya garden. Many thanks to Sandgate State sc...hool grade 3’s who came for a visit today. Plus their teachers snd parents. The best thing of all was, when it came to question time most of the kids put their hands up and asked sensible questions, gives me great hope for the future. See more

06.01.2022 This is why we recycle or reuse everything in the garden

05.01.2022 Well, with a bit of luck we should have some spuds for sale at our street stall in the Aldi walkway, this Saturday morning from 8-12, harvesting tomorrow. While you are visiting the stall why not pop over to Sandgate Village Market and have a look at some of the great stuff over there. Sandgate has been hanging out for a proper market for a long time and this is it, enjoy.

04.01.2022 Sam gave me some soil for the verge, thanks Sam. Should have stopped at 3 barrows, 5 was just a little too much. Lesson learned? Maybe

04.01.2022 The tragedy that the NAFTA agreement inflicted in rural Mexico has been covered in the 2011 movie Los Herederis which shows the impacts on,especially, child labour. ( not to be confused with the 2015 movie with the same name) worth a watch if you can.

03.01.2022 Stop Adani, no new coal mines, transition out of fossil fuels

02.01.2022 Tinchi Tampa flora

02.01.2022 Lots of fresh chemical free veg at the stall tomorrow in the Aldi walkway at Sandgate, plus preserves, cordial, plants and seedlings. Come along and have a chat. Shorncliffe gardeners can come and talk about the proposed new community garden in Hutchison Park. Stall runs 8-12.

02.01.2022 It was with much sadness that we farewelled Lesley Griffin this week who passed away after a short illness. Lesley was a keen gardener who inspired many of us to take up gardening. After having run the Sandbag Community garden with Henk Fischer and Judy she joined the newly formed Green P Community Garden in 2009 and started our education in the uses of herbs. As a long term member of the herb society she had an incredible reservoir of knowledge which she was happy to impart. As an avid vermiculturalist she conducted workshops on how to create and maintain worm farms. Her legacy is significant and her many contributions to our community will be remembered.Farewell Lesley.
