20.01.2022 Friday Flashback - 1980

20.01.2022 Interclub 1A kicked off this evening with the 5000m held as part of the TMA program. It was a double for SBHC, with Chris Sullivan winning the men’s race and Anna Smee the women’s. Emma Pharo Little made her track debut with an impressive 22.05 in the 5km, whilst Craig Downie brushed off the cobwebs after a month in isolation with 10.50 for 3000m.

20.01.2022 Friday Flashback - 1995 Cadbury Marathon For those who have not heard, the 2021 event has been pushed back to Easter Sunday (4 April).

19.01.2022 A reminder that tomorrow’s Interclub is a morning meet, commencing at 9am.

19.01.2022 The Weekend Wrap: The final round of the AS Winter Season was held on Saturday, with the Froggy Wise Memorial Handicaps at Claremont. A barrage of abuse at the Cadbury Road intersection from a local in his 1998 Hyundai Excel let us know that we had arrived at our destination.... Chris Sullivan has been improving his fitness throughout the season and seemingly inspired by winning a golden ticket to run the 2021 Cadbury Marathon, he triumphed in the 8km event. Emma Pharo Little was rewarded for a terrific debut season with second place, whilst Anita McGinniss recorded the fastest female time. In the 4km, Matt Leary could have been a contender but his Handicap said otherwise and it was left to Anh-Dung Dau to fly the blue and white flag, finishing in 5th place. Patrick Lyden may have finished towards the tail end of the field but he redeemed himself by taking out the award for the most snags consumed post race. The trip back to the DAC was uneventful and with the AS trailer packed away, it was time to rest up for the Track and Field Season.... .... which is now only four days away, with the Come and Try Day on Saturday 3 October commencing at 1pm. If you have not been registered during the Summer Season before, you can come along and get a taste of the action for free. Otherwise, you will need to renew your membership via the following link: https://www.revolutionise.com.au/sbhc/registration/ A copy of the program is available on the AS website: https://assets.website-files.com//5f6ec7bf1ebeda5db166f00b Remember that you must enter for your event no later than 30mins prior to the advertised start time and competition numbers will need to be worn (we will have these available at the SBHC tent).

17.01.2022 The Weekend Wrap: A bus load of seagulls headed north on the weekend in search of hot chips, pies and vanilla squares. Along the way, they stopped in at St Leonards for the Statewide Interclub meet, whilst some stayed overnight for the Launceston Running Festival.... Saturday’s highlight was a new club record of 3.92m set by Andreas Kreiss in the Pole Vault, along with a dominant sprinting display by Jagga Pybus in the 60m and 100m. The meet included the State Mixed Relay Championships, in which we fielded three teams in the Open event and one in the U/18’s. Our team of Jess Lyndon, Jarred Gilroy, Ruby Smee and James Taranto took out the bronze medal, whilst our U/18 lineup of Cam Mann, Anna Gatehouse, Alvaro Canosa and Hannah Cuthbert finished 4th. The State 10km Road Championships were held as part of the Launceston Running Festival and saw Ruby Smee take out the Open Women’s event in a new PB of 33.52, with Anna Smee taking the bronze in 39.39. Alexander Kwa won the U/18 5km division, whilst Craig Downie was victorious in the O/50’s. Ben Covington was the best of our men in a super competitive Open Men’s race, finishing in 8th place in a time of 31.40. This Saturday is Reunion Day at the Domain Athletic Centre, commencing at 1pm. It is Athletics South’s showcase event for the summer season and includes the club 400m handicap races at 3.45pm.

17.01.2022 Tonight’s Little A’s coaching session was taken by Anna and Jess.

16.01.2022 It’s Program B tomorrow, commencing at 1pm. If you have not yet registered, you can do so via the following link: https://www.revolutionise.com.au/sbhc/registration/ If you are having trouble coming up with the $200 registration fee, let us know and we will see what we can do to help out.... If you need a pair of spikes, we have some to give away at our tent. Stay classy Sandy Bay.

16.01.2022 The SBHC Bill Dunn and Laura Triffett Memorial 400m Handicap Races will be held as part of this Saturday’s Reunion Meet. These events have a rich history dating back to 1939 and are two of the most prestigious on the club’s annual calendar. Phil Clements will be the handicapper this year and will be taking entries at the club tent up until 3.30pm. Entry is free and open to all SBHC members (including winter registered athletes).

14.01.2022 Interclub Round 2B

13.01.2022 The Weekend Wrap: It was another big weekend of athletics, with events on both days. Saturday saw the return of Parkruns in Tasmania and we had members participating at numerous locations, including Chris Sullivan and Michael Sullivan at Burnie, Keith Cameron-Smith and John Paton at Bellerive, Craig Downie and Natasha Wiggins at Montrose, Matt Leary and Sally Miller at the Domain and Hunter & Annie Smalley at Geeveston.... Interclub was a damp affair with persistent rain throughout but it didn’t prevent Ayden Cousins from producing a sizzling 13.26 for the 100m in his debut over the distance. The young gym-shark is clearly showing the benefits of a big winter on the bench press. Cam Mann once again topped the points tally for the men, with Emma Pharo Little leading the way for our women. There’s just 17 points separating us and Eastern Suburbs in the Combined Premiership which can be made up with just one throw of the discus (or maybe two in the case of Jarred Gilroy). Talking of Gilly, he made his way to Launceston on Sunday, where he finished 2nd in the elite section of the Balfour Burn. The Southern All Schools were held at the DAC on Sunday and saw some excellent performances from our juniors. Alexander Kwa was the standout, winning the 1500m in a new PB of 4.10, whilst the men’s 100m saw a SBHC trifecta, with Tyson Hartill winning from Lachlan Krelle and Jacob Vanderkroef. Interclub this week is on Show Day commencing at 9am, with the 5000m event on as part of the TMA program at 6.20pm Wednesday evening. There is no Interclub on Saturday but plenty of Parkrun options, including the return of the Kingston event.

13.01.2022 Friday Flashback - Donna MacFarlane and Frank Strk 2006.

13.01.2022 Interclub R8D Ebony Webb

12.01.2022 The Weekend Wrap: Undoubtedly the highlight of the weekend was Jessica Collin’s win in the Bruny Ultra Marathon. She completed the 64km journey in a time of 5:29.21 - fantastic effort Jess.... A shout out to our favourite NSAC member, Mick Davis, who won the men’s event. We had numerous members competing as part of teams, all of whom enjoyed the camaraderie of a great event. Long standing SBHC member Paul Riseley is the Race Director, with support from a couple of his club mates in Tracy Tavasz and Teresa Seaman. The small volunteer committee do an amazing job to organise what has become one of the biggest events on the Tasmanian athletic calendar. Sunday saw a very low key Interclub held in cold and windy conditions in which we welcomed Josh Hwaba back in action in the long jump. The performance of the day went to James Taranto, who powered through a gale force head wind to win the men’s 400m. Sadly, only Jessica Palermo and Emma Pharo Little were our only female competitors brave enough to face the conditions and we could only muster one men’s relay team. Also on the weekend was the Devonport Carnival, in which Jarred Gilroy covered his petrol money with a second placing in both the 120m and the 400m. This Saturday is the Statewide Interclub at St Leonard’s, followed by the Launceston Running Festival. Best of luck to everyone making the journey north.

11.01.2022 The Weekend Wrap: Saturday kicked off with Parkrun action and after three 2nd placings in a row, Chris Sullivan broke though with a win at Kingston. Robbie Neill continued his return to fitness with a win at Montrose, whilst Nick Radovanovic took another step on the long road back with a solid 20.31 at Bellerive.... After light winds all morning, the 3000m got underway at Interclub in near gale force conditions. Ben Covington was undeterred however, running 8.34 for a new PB. Jacob Sullivan also produced a PB in the 100m, whilst Jagga Pybus broke the 11 second barrier for the first time in a while. Alvaro Canosa ran the fastest 200m of the day, despite running solo in the last heat. Inspired by her brother’s run in the men’s 800m, Lucy Taranto produced a PB of 2.31 in the women’s event to continue her fine season. Emma Litte topped the points tally for the women, helping move us to second overall, whilst Chris Sullivan racked up 79 points to lead the men’s score. The Richmond Carnival was held on Sunday and saw a host of members in action, with the highlight being Tommy Bennett’s win in the junior boy’s 120m. This Saturday is the Bruny Island Ultra and Relay, with Interclub moving to 4pm on Sunday. Photo’s courtesy of the Mercury.

11.01.2022 A few photos from the opening Round of Interclub 1A that saw Ruby Smee take nine seconds off Joanna Campbell-Smith’s 30 year old State Under 20 3000m record with a time of 9:18.42. Great to see a host of new members and a good vibe around the track.

11.01.2022 The Weekend Wrap: Saturday kicked off with Parkrun action around the State and saw Matt Leary notch up his 50th run. Not content with achieving this milestone, he backed up with a 5000m on the track, followed by a 1500m.... Chris and Michael Sullivan headed up to Orford, along with Francesca Smith, who was first home for the women. Chris found himself in the runners up position for the second week in a row, this time defeated by the Metro Gnome (Mick Davis). The highlight of Interclub from an SBHC perspective was Andreas Kreiss’ performance in the high jump, clearing a new PB of 1.90m. Jagga Pybus continued his return to form with a narrow win over Max Brideson in the 100m, whilst Jarred Gilroy left nothing out there except room for improvement in the 1500m. Anna Smee didn’t exactly burn up the track in the 5000m but she did nearly burn the grandstand down when cooking the BBQ. The blackened snags went down a treat and provided a perfect prelude to the presentation of record certificates to Alexander Kwa, Moses Khasif, Max Brideson, George McLeod, Harrison McLeod, Johnno Pullen and Jagga Pybus for their smoking performances on the track last season. There is no Interclub this weekend, so do a Parkrun or rest up for Program 7C on Saturday 28 November.

10.01.2022 Interclub Round 7C

09.01.2022 On a hot summer night, would you offer your throat to the wind on the red track? We had a few who said yes in the 3000m this evening.

09.01.2022 The past and present State U/20 women’s mile record holders.

08.01.2022 The Weekend Wrap: Saturday’s Interclub was a morning meet and Alexander Kwa made full use of the ideal conditions in the 3000m to break nine minutes for the first time. James Taranto is now officially a distance runner rather than a frustrated sprinter after he broke the 10 minute barrier, whilst Matt Leary posted another sub 11 time.... Craig Downie was unsuccessful in selling his Hoka spikes, despite demonstrating their age defying capabilities with a time of 10.23. Jagga Pybus and Max Brideson both ran 11.47 for the 100m and would have been joined by Tyson Hartill had he not run out of gas at the 95m mark. Alexander Smart was nearly caught napping in the 800m when an ageing masters athlete loomed large on his shoulder up the straight but held on to keep his pride intact. Lucy Taranto was not so lucky, with her young legs unable to carry her past a rejuvenated Anna Smee in the women’s 800m. Anna Gatehouse won the women’s high jump in her debut for the club, whilst Andreas Kreiss produced the performance of the day with a clearance of 1.85m in the men’s event. Cam Mann and Jess Lyndon topped the points again and with six teams in the relay, we increased our lead in the Combined Premiership. Interclub 6B starts tomorrow with a 3000m at 6.20pm as part of the TMA competition, with the main program getting underway at 1pm on Saturday. With great weather on show for The Triple Top Mountain Run held on Sunday, which is a gruelling trail run over the mountains of Van Dyke, Claude and Roland with over 1,100m of elevation for the 19km course, with it finishing with almost 1,000m decent over the final 5km. David Bailey was third and Robbie Hunt fourth. Jessica Collins was first female to finish.

08.01.2022 The relay event at Interclub tomorrow is the 4 x 100m at 3.15pm. Put your name down on the whiteboard at our tent if you are available to help make up a team.

07.01.2022 The (Long) Weekend Wrap: Show Day Interclub saw a solid turnout for the Bay, with the return of Jess Lyndon boosting our women’s team to second place for the round. Four men’s 4x400m relay teams saw the men’s team make it three in a row, with Cam Mann once again leading the points tally.... Chris Sullivan raced straight from the track to set up camp outside the Running Edge in order to be first in line for the release of the Nike Vaporfly Next % at 9am Friday morning. The Tasmanian All Schools Championships were held in Launceston over the weekend, with standout performances from Alexander Kwa and Violet Owen. Having blitzed the 3000m on Thursday, Craig Downie headed north for the Bridport 10.8km, placing in the top 10, whilst on the Sunshine Coast, Alex Humphrey took out the In2Adventure 11km Trail Run. Interclub Round 4D got underway tonight, with the 3000m held as part of the TMA program. SBHC was well represented, with Anna Smee, Anne Pullen, Emma Little, Sally Miller, Jacqueline Liffiton, Chris Sullivan, Michael Sullivan, Patrick Lyden and Chris Gates all donning the blue and white. The program continues on Saturday commencing at 1pm.

05.01.2022 Congratulations James and Jacs.

05.01.2022 A quadruple for the Bay. Tommy Bennett wins the junior boys 120m at the Richmond Carnival from Sam Essex, George Chesterman and Oliver Moore. Photo courtesy of the Mercury.

05.01.2022 The Weekend Wrap It was a big weekend of athletics, with events on the track, road and trails. The main event on Saturday was the opening round of the 2020/21 T&F season in which we welcomed a host of new members and witnessed a new State U/20 women’s 3000m record to Ruby Smee of 9.18. ... This was of course also a new Club Record, breaking the previous mark of 9.40 set by Andrea Marquardt in 1992. Matthew Leary will have to adjust his goals after setting himself the target of breaking 11 minutes for the 3000m and achieving it in just his second run. Max Brideson took out the sprint double and looks set for a big season, whilst Jarred Gilroy showed room for improvement as an 800m runner. It was great to see Isabella Farid back in action and she helped make up two women’s relay teams. Cam Mann picked up where he left off last season, racking up another ton to be our leading point scorer for the men, whilst Marie Kwa took the honours for the women with 43 points on debut. Our men’s team racked up a healthy 1231 points for the round and helped by a strong showing from our small but dedicated women’s crew, we currently sit 100 points clear in the combined premiership points tally. The Ross Running Festival was held on Sunday, with a smattering of blue and white in all of the races on offer. Anita McGinniss won the women’s half marathon, Jessica Collins was second in the women’s marathon, Callum Degenaar finished second in the 2km and Jimmy Hortle ran a new PB of 16.41 in finishing third in the 5km. Also on Sunday was the Snake Plains Trail Run that saw David Bailey finish second, sandwiched between two former SBHC members in Alex and Robbie Hunt. He claimed the title of King of Kunyani for his efforts over the three races in the series. This Saturday is Interclub Round 2B, starting at 1pm, whilst on Sunday it’s the Southern All Schools Championships at the Domain. The Burnie Ten virtual 10km or 5km can be run either day this weekend.

05.01.2022 Friday Flashback

05.01.2022 Friday Flashback: The Club Secretary sporting the new SBHC rugby top in 1999. Photo courtesy of Lynne Lyden

05.01.2022 The Weekend Wrap: Chris Sullivan’s quest to be the first person to complete every Parkrun in Australia continued on Saturday, heading up to Launceston with brother Michael, along with Keith Cameron- Smith to run in the debut of the Kate Reed Event. He made it back in time to notch up 81 points at Interclub, including helping out with pacing Ruby Smee to a new State U/20 5000m record.... Cam Mann and Jess Lyndon once again topped the points tally and our lead over ESAC inched ahead by 40 points in the Combined Premiership. It was great to see Prue Clarke make her debut, as well as the return to the track of Jagga Pybus in the relay. Unfortunately, 20 points went begging when Emma Pharo Little was awoken from her warmup for the 1500m by the sound of the bell in the very same event. More points looked to be going down the drain when Patrick Lyden strained a calf in the 200m and was forced to withdraw from the relay. Alex Smart saved the day, answering the call of duty as he was heading out the gate and running a superb third leg of the 4 x 100m in his trainers. Ayden Cousins debut in the 1500m was one to remember, with an eye catching front running display that is sure to do his chances of securing a sponsorship deal with Musashi Performance and Nutrition no harm at all. On Sunday, the Sullivan’s were on the road again, travelling to Dover for the Tassal Ten, along with Craig Downie, Anita McGinniss, Francesca Smith, Annie Smalley, Anh-Dung Dau and Marcus Degenaar. Interclub Round 5A starts tomorrow night with the 5000m at 6:20pm as part of the TMA program. This Saturday is a morning meet, commencing at 9am.

04.01.2022 The Weekend Wrap: Saturday’s interclub was at Snug, with SBHC having duty club honours. Half a tank of diesel was all it took to tow the AS trailer from the Domain and with a healthy turnout of volunteers, the course was setup by 9am.... By 10.05am, Peter Lyden had made his final adjustments to the course and the long race was able to commence. Anita McGinniss escaped the log jam at the bridge and powered away from the women’s field to win the 6km event, whilst Anna Smee was second in the 3km race. In the Freycinet Peninsular Trail Run, David Bailey took out the 29km event in a performance that had some observers awarding him a icon. Toni Spinks finished 3rd in the 11km event and gained a few likes but no icons. Also on the weekend, Natasha Wiggins travelled to Cape York to contest the Compass Club 42km event and in doing so, became just one of six runners to have completed a marathon at Australia’s most southern and northern points. Tomorrow night at 7pm at the DAC, Chris Price will present on race preparation and recovery techniques, whilst the winter calendar concludes this Saturday with the Froggy Wise Handicaps at Claremont, with a BBQ and presentations to follow. The Track and Field Season is now less than two weeks away, with registrations open through the portal on our website: https://www.revolutionise.com.au/sbhc/registration/

04.01.2022 The Weekend Wrap: Saturday morning saw numerous members participating in Parkruns, with David Bailey first at Montrose Foreshore, Chris Sullivan first home at Kingston and Robbie Neill doing likewise at Bellerive. Marie Kwa kicked off a memorable day with a new Club U/14 record in the javelin with a throw of 28.76m and followed this up with a win in the Laura Triffett Memorial 400m handicap race.... We welcomed back the Hawkins family at Reunion Day, along with the successful return to the track of Vandy Kanneh. The latter was one of six SBHC athletes to progress to the Lionel Skeggs Memorial 100m event, with the others beings Jarred Gilroy, Jagga Pybus, Max Brideson, Tyson Hartill and Alvaro Canosa. Jess Lyndon flew flag for the Bay in the women’s event, being our sole representative in the Froggy Wise Memorial. Ben Covington made it back to back titles in the Tas Bevis Memorial, whilst Ruby Smee collected a rare double in winning the Mandy McIntrye 3000m and Max Cherry 1500m. Josh Hwaba finished 3rd in the Steve Knott long jump, as did Jess Lyndon in the Jo Cubit event. Phil Clements was given responsibility of coming up with the handicaps for the club 400m events and did a sterling job on debut. Front marker Marie Kwa held on in the women’s race whilst club stalwart Jarred Gilroy stormed home from the back mark to claim his first Bill Dunn Memorial in 15 years with the club. Have a great Christmas everyone and we will see you on the 9th of January for the Odd Distance Day at the Domain.
