20.01.2022 Meet the Science Write Now scientist of the month, Daniella Teixeira - a conservation scientist! Daniella is researching the conservation of many species including black cockatoos, and spent her PhD observing their behaviour and developing algorithms for detecting the cockatoos in sound recordings. 18.01.2022 Join the University of Queensland’s Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) and Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Science (CBCS) for a one-off educational screening of Breaking Boundaries: The Science of Our Planet introduced by two of its stars, conservation scientist Dr Daniella Teixeira and award wining filmmaker Beau Eastman! This documentary is as important as it is devastating, lead by Sir David Attenborough and centered around the research of Professor Johan Rocs...tröm as they examine Earth’s biodiversity collapse and the ways in which this crisis may still be averted. Witness incredible cinematography as we learn from leading scientists around the world. Following this educational screening we will gather on campus to enjoy some refreshments details on catering to come. ******** This is a free event. However, participants MUST be a current member of either the Society for Conservation Biology UQ Chapter, or the Centre for Biodiversity of Conservation Science. Registrations through Eventbrite tickets are essential for entry. Family of CBCS members are welcome pre-approval of their attendance is required. ******* If you would like to attend and your SCB membership is not up to date, remember you can renew for just $3 semester via the QPAY link (www.scbbris.getqpay.com). Memberships with SCB/CBCS associated with tickets will all be monitored with corresponding restrictions to event access, to comply with our rights to have a private cohort, one off educational screening of this film. #sciencecommunication #scicomm #conservationscience #conservationstory #globalchange #scb #scbbrisuq

12.01.2022 Don’t forget to come join us for some social birding and a morning picnic on the 21st! Get in that sweet fresh air before uni starts back again

11.01.2022 To celebrate Biodiversity Day , let’s hear about the wonderful Whale Shark, which our wonderful Laetitia spent her last few weeks researching in WA Whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) are the largest fish in the sea, but very little is known about them. I recently had the pleasure of assisting @Ecocean in their tracking research at Ningaloo Reef and was lucky enough to get up close and personal with them. These gentle giants pose no threat to humans (they mainly eat plankto...n) but humans are a massive threat to whale sharks due to targeted fishing, bycatch from fisheries, ship strikes, and marine pollution. The global population is declining and the species is classified as endangered. We can change this though. Some simple things you can do to help shark conservation include learning more about sharks, minimising your carbon footprint, reducing your seafood consumption and choosing sustainable seafood, and not buying shark products (shark-based squalene is often used in cosmetics, shark cartilage is found in pet treats, and of course, shark fin soup is still served in many restaurants). Swimming with a whale shark is a mind-blowing experience, and that is another way to help because well-regulated, shark-friendly tourism like in Western Australia means the sharks are worth far more alive than in a bowl of soup. @smollnsalty . . . . . . . . #whaleshark #research #conservation #ningalooreef #ningaloo #WA #exmouth #justanotherdayinwa #westernaustralia #straya #australia #visitwa #westernaustraliauncovered #seeaustralia #australianwildlife #wildsideaustralia #aussie_wildlife_photography #wildlifeofaustralia#discoveraustralia #wildlifeplanet #girlswhofreedive #weareocean #water_of_our_world #photowildlife #wildlife_perfection #vitaminsea #waterlust #underwaterisbetter See more

11.01.2022 **VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY** Queensland Conservation Council Project: Tracking potential EPBC breaches through GIS analysis within the Brigalow bioregion.... Task: Using publicly available data analyse the relationship between the Accepted Development Code Notifications for Native Forest Practices under the Vegetation Management Act and the occurrence of the Brigalow Threatened Ecological Community under the EPBC Act. When: There is a degree of urgency because we at QCC think it's happening and it’s illegal. Impact: The analysis will be used in a report submitted to both levels of government and used in a pitch to national media. It will help confirm what one arm of government has already identified, that another arm of government is ignoring. Remuneration: Limited but QCC happy to discuss/negotiate. If you want to help with Queensland Conservation Council's investigation please call or email Andrew on 0457 798 359 [email protected]
