25.01.2022 We LOVE choosing books for our Secret Book Club subscribers each month! As soon as SBS started a subscription service with the Secret Book Club, I wasted no time in signing up. I had spoken with Laura and Amy about books before and I knew they had a magical touch in recommending books. They are well versed in all things books and it doesn’t take long for them to understand your tastes. For me, they totally get my bookish jam and receiving a surprise book from them each month is total literary bliss. Julia

24.01.2022 Fierce and soft, loyal and kind, strong and loving. Happy 30th birthday, Laura. Thank you for the joy you have brought into my life. Here are some [bookish] facts about Laura... - She collects editions of Alice in Wonderland (last count was around 35). - She loves Stephen King’s writing more when he was an alcoholic. - She will often read a sentence or paragraph of a book then put it down and stare at nothing for a long time.... - She probably finishes around 1% of the books she starts. - She will talk for hours to anyone who’ll listen about the type of paper and binding of certain books. - The first book she gave me (before we were together) was a copy of Alice in Wonderland from her own shelf, with a note that said Amzlove - we’re all a little mad here. I still have the note (and the book). - She collects special notes and tickets and receipts and memories in the well-worn copy of High Fidelity I sent her as a secret book, before we were together. - The oldest book she has on her shelf is one called ‘Enquire Within Upon Everything’ from 1878. 23.01.2022 Our favourite thing about Secret Book Stuff at The Station is when people walk in and gaze around, a look of wonder on their face, and say ‘Wow, it’s such a great vibe in here.’ Heck yeah, it’s a vibe (and not just when we’re drinking whisky behind the counter). We have been so careful and precious with that energy. We have loved the shit out of this shop. It’s a time we will treasure forever. 19.01.2022 Last month, we spoke about book-to-movie adaptations on our regular ABC radio segment. This might be surprising to some, but we're not actually super precious about reading the book before seeing the movie. In fact, Amy would go so far as to say that she will specifically see a movie before reading the book... because if it's a great movie, you've never going to be disappointed by the book! Laura's favourite book-to-movie is The Shining, even though they're both very different. And if you ask her (or even if you don't, lol) she's full of trivia and facts. We’re in the process of practising S L O W and conscious engagement on our platforms. (Thanks to @gumbootsbythesea for an amazing session recently that inspired this) Sometimes, we have nothing to say, and that’s okay. Other times, we have a lot to say, and we’re bloody well gonna say it. If we have something to share, we will share it. But we’re not into posting for the sake of it, just to remind you that we’re here, or to add to the noise of social media. Instead we’re going to exhale. Trust that you know where to find us. 09.01.2022 Someone sent us this amazing bit of trivia about Dolly Parton and her dedication to books and kindness... it totally blew our minds! In 1995, Dolly founded the Imagination Library, an organization that, in its own words, mails free, high-quality books to children from birth until they begin school, no matter their family’s income. Dolly's father was illiterate, and she credits him with her passion for this project: I created the Imagination Library as a tribute to my Dadd...y. He was the smartest man I have ever known but I know in my heart his inability to read probably kept him from fulfilling all of his dreams. Her hope? To get children reading early, and to instill in them a love of books at an early age, all in an attempt to increase literacy.

The world of independent bookstores is full of passionate people who just flipping love books. 01.01.2022 A little love story about Insomniac City by @billhayesphotography for your V Day gag fest. This is one of our favourite books of all time. I recommended it to Laura, before we were together, knowing she would experience so much joy and heartbreak in the pages, just like I did. Finding a shared love of certain words, books, and stories was the seed that planted the foundation of our budding relationship. Laura says she knew she loved me from the first moment, but mine was a sl...ower burn. One that evolved through connecting over books and poetry - words we both read as well as words we wrote for each other. Our own love story became intertwined with that of Bill and Oliver, in a different time-space context, on the other side of the world. We felt what they did, grieved what they did, and eventually decided to hold each other tighter against the great unknown ahead of us all. Their love - lost and found and lasting - inspired ours. That, my bookish friends, is the power of a great book. See more
