17.01.2022 Some of singer-songwriter Rebecca Barnards finest work has been created well away from a recording studio. Nature is where I process things and plan and just be, surrounded by this beautiful healing, environment. I love waking up in the morning and seeing the sunshine and hearing birds sing and going on long walks with my doggies, Rebecca says. That is my favourite thing to do. It gets into my cells and helps me produce something good musically. My last album was totally ...inspired by nature, its even got bird calls and frogs and fish splashing-like sounds. #VicSeniorsFestival #InTheGroove #RebeccaBarnard #RebeccaEmpire #Music

14.01.2022 When comedian Mark Trevorrow birthed his over-the-top safari-suit-wearing character Bob Downe in 1984, the aim was to make people laugh but he has been delighted to discover Bob hasnt just nailed that, he has also helped many young people to become comfortable in their sexuality. One of the nicest things over the years has been if Im out and about at a shopping centre or somewhere, Ill get approached by a mum with an obviously gay young person. Its either a son or a daughter, usually a son, and theyll tell me what a difference its made to them and their family and their feelings about the kid being gay, Mark says. Whilst some older gay people have criticised Bob for perpetuating a stereotype, Mark says they need to look harder.

12.01.2022 She said, I will never, ever not be heard again. Learning one of your workshop participants has ordered a coffee would not normally be cause for a celebration but, for voice specialist Geraldine Cook-Dafner, it was a breakthrough moment. With a grant she received from the Australian Research Council, Geraldine had been investigating the effects of actor vocal training techniques on people with impaired hearing who wore cochlear implants. It was very much about them find...ing their voices and having the confidence to be heard in public, because what often happens if they have electronic aids, such as a cochlear implant, is that people dont often hear them. People will often say, Whatd you say? Speak up, and its really disempowering. #VicSeniorsFestival #InTheGroove #GeraldineCook #TheVoice #Acting

11.01.2022 Country singer Patrick McMahon learned early on that showbiz is a rollercoaster when he was given the cane by a Benedictine monk at his boarding school after winning a televised talent show when he was 16. I snuck out of school in New Norcia and hitched a ride with a truckie down to Perth to perform on Stars of the Future, which was like the prelude to The Voice back in the day, Patrick says. Enjoy this video from #VicSeniorsFestival as part of #InTheGroove.

07.01.2022 When voice over artist Pete Smith was growing up, he wasnt interested in being a firefighter or a police officer his big dream was to be a radio announcer. I just idolised the radio people. A typical night after tea Id sit on the couch with mum doing the knitting and dad reading the evening paper and me looking up at the radio on the mantelpiece, listening, rivetted. It was theatre of the imagination. #VicSeniorsFestival #InTheGroove #PeteSmith #Voice

01.01.2022 Performances for the Victorian Seniors Festival reimagined are often a trip down memory lane for listeners, but Tania Kernaghan experienced her own blast from the past when recording her latest contribution. I was over at my brother Lees place and I mentioned the seniors festival and that I was going to record another song, and he said, Why dont we do it now?. It was a golden opportunity hes hard to nail down. So, he played the piano and sang some backing vocals and ...I sang as an old song, Tennessee Waltz, that we used to sing when we were kids in our little band the Angels and the blue devils. We ended up having a bit of a jam. It was really great. #VicSeniorsFestival #InTheGroove #TaniaKernaghan #LeeKernaghan #CountryMusic #Music
