07.01.2022 From the 16th to the 30th of November we are exhibiting the current work of Kate Hay. Kate's show, called "Hang Out Your Washing", addresses mental illness & the stigma that surrounds these conditions. As Kate says in her artist's statement: "Mental illness is most often an illness you can't see. Not like someone on crutches. Because you can't see it, people have trouble understanding it... In this society there is a stigma associated with mental illness & most often this sti...gma is internalised & people suffer for long periods without reaching out for help. This can lead to grave situations like psychosis or worse, suicide. This project is an attempt to take some of the power out of the stigma, by naming some of the words & using Australian humour to defuse their power. It comes from the old adage - 'Don't hang your dirty linen out for the neighbours to see'. hence the title of the exhibition, 'Hang out Your Washing'". This project has been put together by Kate Hay & Elspeth Jones and will be at The Serpentine Community Gallery from the 16th to the 30th of November & the gallery is in North Lismore at 17a Bridge Street.
