22.01.2022 The last 6 months we have been a little quiet on social media as we juggle running a small business and fully renovating an off grid house in the country. This summer of unprecedented bushfires has been confronting for Australia and us personally (with having to evacuate a fire 1km from our property a few weeks ago). There has been a push amongst the design industry to advocate change in not only how we run our businesses but design for the built environment. Here at Setsquar...e I’ve been looking to see how I can do more. Our main environmental impact would be the amount of fossil fuels we personally use commuting to and from our Brunswick Studio and meetings in Melbourne and country Victoria. So 2020 is all about working more from home and travelling less between meetings. To do this we purchased a 2nd hand cabin that we have retrofitted with old windows, quality insulation and hand made joinery from timber we found under our house. It still needs flooring and upholstery for the day bed but it’s a pretty magical space to create and be inspired in. It’s fully off grid and even harvests it’s own water to feed the surrounding garden. We bought the property for the hill and 100+ year old walnut tree and I can now enjoy them both from my new desk. 21.01.2022 So much of my work is about getting to know my clients. Not just discovering the things they like / don’t like, but also how they / their kids / dogs / cats etc like to occupy their private space. How and where they make their coffee, do they use cookbooks or just look up online, do they fold or hang their clothes, have a large collection of whiskey / art / records, if they are ridiculously neat and have everything on show or need help hiding things away. There is endless inf...ormation to learn. So much of this is done face to face through casual conversations at their existing houses. Covid has really shifted the way I now work. I have one client who I have not yet physically met and another who we have only met once. Sharing online resources and sending each other Instagram posts etc has allowed me a new way of interacting and getting to know them. It will be interesting to see what the new normal becomes. In the meantime I am putting a face to the name and will be here in my WFH studio (probably far less dressed up) thinking of new ways to engage. It’s not yet finished but I have a lovely view to our country property and my new miniature horse Lizzie (who all my clients have now heard a lot about). See more

20.01.2022 It isn’t always bigger makes better for a bathroom. With the right mix of 1) materials 2) clever storage and layout and 3) natural light you can turn a shoebox into a space you want to be in. This pint sized bathroom (& laundry!) in inner Melbourne employs all three strategies. Tiny mosaic wall tiles takes the scale down to suit the room. The laundry massing is recessed into the room next door to decrease the depth of the cabinetry and the vanity storage is tucked into the side to keep the view from the door clear and clutter free. The incorporation of a skylight with dropped Benchtop height below enhances the vertical volume and prolongs the travel of the eye. This project is currently in Concept Design and we have loved working with both our amazing clients as well as @mobyarchitectureandinteriors #setsquarestudio

20.01.2022 Progress shot from our lovely clients Freya and Mary down at the @sos.senseofself bathhouse site in Collingwood. The hot bath was tiled yesterday & it is starting to feel real. Can not wait to soak away the stresses of 2020 in this special space Collab: #setsquarestudio, @ellaleoncio from @chamberlainarchitects and @hearthstudio

20.01.2022 Soft textured greens at site yesterday. An exciting hospo fitout heading towards an end of year opening. #setsquarestudio

18.01.2022 Starting to update the Setsquare website with our latest built projects and others that are currently in the works. Its been a busy year! First up is the Merri Creek Townhouse set for completion in the coming months. We were engaged to design a custom joinery package to suit our clients love of books and music. Downstairs is a more formal space complete with open fire and a lush day bed, whilst upstairs is all about fun colour, reading and listening to our clients extensive record collection. http://setsquarestudio.com/merri-creek-townhouse-1

16.01.2022 Thanks to NONAGON.style for featuring our Firecracker Event HQ2 project

16.01.2022 First trip to Melbourne in what feels like eternity. It was so wonderful to spend time with my clients in real life and to see / touch / experience the spaces we have been creating together. A few details from down at the @sos.senseofself construction site where beautiful vignettes are starting to take form. Can not believe this old warehouse now has walls, rooms and almost a pool Looking forward to more site visits and less emails / zooms as Victoria begins to reopen (0 cases again today )

11.01.2022 Perfect way to finish the day and just pause the world for a minute. @ Blackwood, Victoria

10.01.2022 Exciting photos of our joinery coming in from the Northcote townhouse site

09.01.2022 A warm modern farmhouse flat lay for a lovely renovation in Central Ballarat. Whilst a lot of our projects feature colour, we also love doing more tonal and paired back material palettes. The trick is playing with scale, texture and the varying interactions with finish. This project will also feature locally made black steel windows and a lush green garden (complete with pool ) - which will add contrast and allow the subtle variations in the palette to pop. I’ve really loved this project and working closely with my clients. I can’t wait for them to move into their new family home which will be just in time for Christmas.

04.01.2022 Fried Hustle (High Street Preston) is FINALLY opening this Wednesday! We were lucky enough to be involved in the Interiors and branding colours for this great new eatery. We’ve personally tried everything on the menu and can vouch that it is all amazing

03.01.2022 To get you hungry and watching the clock for lunchtime some new pics from @fried_hustle by the amazing @chipmooney When designing this space I really wanted the interiors to define the branding; to be the ultimate backdrop for Ellie’s amazing food. It was all about using colour where it would sit adjacent to the food and develop a relationship between the burgers and the material environment. I played with light conditions to create a dynamic scene, where sunshine could stream through the front Venetian blinds, cast onto the 3d scalloped timber and where wall lights could highlight plants and signage etc. I’m so pleased with how Chip captured this ambition so perfectly in this series of photos #setsquarestudio

03.01.2022 Lots of beautiful things coming together at our Ballarat project

02.01.2022 Its been 10 weeks since we began this crazy journey. Turning a run down farm house with zero services into our very own off-grid sanctuary. We now have water, lpg gas, heating and limited power, but still a way to go! Our ambition from the start was to be as green as possible; sourcing where we could pre-loved, seconds / end of line products and purchasing as geographically local as possible and utilising what was existing. We’ve gone back to basics and taught ourselves skills we never thought we could do. Whilst I never EVER want to tile again I look forward to showering here every day and admiring how far this place has come. Bath & Tiles sourced from Facebook market place and they are perfect #setsquarestudio

01.01.2022 More love for our S.O.S Sense Of Self project over at Russh.com We are so pleased to be designing this amazing space along with an all girl power team Ella Leoncio (Chamberlain Architects) and Sarah Trotter (Hearth Studio) <3
