25.01.2022 Information in Auslan for deaf children re: Coronavirus

25.01.2022 30th Anniversary of Auslan Did you know that the Auslan Dictionary was released 30 years ago? Auslan has been used by Deaf Australians for many years possibly 1...00 years or more. But, 30 years ago Trevor Johnston, whose parents are deaf, had the idea of bringing people together to research and write the Auslan Dictionary. This book was a significant step in recognizing Auslan as a language and growing awareness of Auslan. The book has since been used in courses, workshops and schools to support people learning Auslan all across Australia. To celebrate the anniversary, weve asked people to share a few words, have a look.

25.01.2022 Celebrating National (and International!) Week of Deaf People...

24.01.2022 Next week is International Week of the Deaf. Join in the celebration by learning some Auslan! Follow along with Sally and learn some common phrases. #SignLanguagesForEveryone #IWDeaf2020 #IDSL2020

23.01.2022 Jingle Bells upgraded.

22.01.2022 More than 70 million deaf people throughout the world have the right to access information in their national sign languages on the Coronavirus Pandemic. The Wor...ld Federation of the Deaf and World Association of Sign Language Interpreters release these joint Guidelines on Providing Access to Public Health Information in National Sign Languages during the Coronavirus Pandemic Key points: In all situations it is critical that professional sign language interpreters or translators with national-level qualifications are hired. Information should be available through all media channels and on all platforms. If the sign language version is only available through some channels (i.e. narrowcast), or only through web-based platforms, there is a risk that deaf people will miss out on crucial updates at critical times. An interpreter should be physically present and visible on camera alongside whomever is speaking in making new announcements. This will ensure deaf people can access information through a variety of media outlets as other members of the public do. In this document we outline best practices for providing sign language access in different contexts. The International Sign Version is available here: https://vimeo.com/398632908/49a458d1e8 The full document is available here: http://wfdeaf.org//18-march-2020-guidelines-on-providing-/ Special thanks to Maya de Wit and Jemina Napier for their work on these Guidelines, and to Alda Batory for collecting images of best practice.

22.01.2022 Creative, engaging and well-designed sign linguistics games made by the Certificiate III in Auslan students at Shenton. Cant wait to see all their peer game trial presentations!

21.01.2022 Year 8 Auslan students have recently been working on depicting signs - check out the depicting signs (and constructed action) in this neat clip!! Very clever representation.

21.01.2022 Be sure to check out the movie, Feel the Beat, which came out on @netflix last Friday! @shayleemansfield is in the movie! Add it to your summer movies list. I...n the meanwhile, enjoy this! #whyisign #askmewhyisign Repost from @shayleemansfield Now that the Feel the Beat film is on @Netflix worldwide, I want to show the beauty of Deaf children across the globe signing Feel the Beat in their own language. Too often we are marginalized for not being able to hear. Today, we are here to celebrate the gift of being Deaf and sign language. To show the world what it truly means to feel the beat. And when the world doesnt know how or want you to fit you in, dont forget to keep dancing to your own beat. Family always, Shaylee #Signlanguage #DanceToYourOwnBeat #FeelTheBeat #DeafWorld #DeafCulture See more

21.01.2022 This insanely talented group of Year 12 Auslan students are just about to fly the nest! ); We will miss them all enormously! Wishing them all the best with their final school exams next week, and their upcoming WACE examinations. An outstanding bunch of kind, considerate, funny, clever, and genuinely lovely young people, they deserve nothing but the best. Today was clearly "Primary School Dress Up Day" at Shenton during Year 12 Celebration Week, but the work didnt stop in ...Auslan, with the students rehearsing their final practical presentation research pieces with the fabulous Deaf mentors on staff at SCDEC. Year 12s - you are amazing. Please remember your ATAR score is truly just a number, and nowhere near defines the incredible human beings that you are. You epitomise the Shenton ethos of "much more than marks, learning for life", and you are destined for greatness in whatever path you choose, and you will make the world a more accessible place in the process. It has been a privilege for us as educators to teach such a brilliant group - and you were the very first cohort to start your Auslan journey in Year 7! Such an honour for us as teachers get to know you over so many years - and so very rare. Indeed a treat, as you are exceptional people. Keep in touch with us post-WACE, see you around in the Deaf community in the future, and all the best to each and every one of you!! See more

21.01.2022 "We want to make sure that every deaf Australian at home, regardless if youre with family, a partner, housemates, or alone, receives important information in A...uslan, our first language." Brent Phillips from Expression Australia finishes Sundays 6pm news bulletin with a special message. The ABC News channel will be doing these special Auslan editions of ABC News every Sunday at 6pm.

20.01.2022 A fabulous translation...and particularly poignant when the back story is known re: battling for a Deaf childs access to an equitable education (in another country). Kudos to the interpreter...and best wishes to the family this was created for. #staystrong

20.01.2022 Beautiful!! Featuring our own Ms Levitzke-Gray - can you spot her?

19.01.2022 AUSLAN CELEBRATION The Mosman Park School for Deaf Children recently held an Auslan Arvo a celebration of Australian sign language and deaf culture. The ...21 deaf students hosted the whole school assembly for the first time, performing an Auslan song and a drumming performance for more than 350 of their peers, teachers and family members. The celebrations continued with Auslan games, arts and crafts, and butterfly and bat face painting did you know these animals are deaf? Principal Monique Smith said it was a great opportunity for the deaf students to take pride in the language and showcase their talent. Its often thought that deaf kids cant quite achieve the same as hearing, but here we teach them that deaf kids can, and that they can do anything they set their minds to. #WAEduNews | #InternationalDayOfPeopleWithDisability

18.01.2022 Auslan Tutor is FREE! In addition to National Week of Deaf People (NWDP) this Wednesday is International Day of Sign Languages. With school holidays around the corner how about learning Auslan using our Auslan Tutor app?

18.01.2022 Happy International Day of Sign Languages! How good is Auslan! Today to show my support for our deaf community, Im taking part in the first #AuslanLeadersChal...lenge and having a go at Auslan. I hope youll overlook any mistakes, I need a bit more practice, but today is all about having a go Id encourage all Australians to learn some Auslan and give it a try. Auslan (Australian Sign Language) is used by over 30,000 people in our country and provides access for deaf and hearing impaired people to all areas of life. Thanks to The Deaf Society for the great work they do and for organising the #AuslanLeadersChallenge #IDSL2019

11.01.2022 Likely to be suitable for current year 10s and above...sounds like a fabulous learning opportunity! Douglas was the ASL consultant on the post-apocalyptic horror movie "A Quiet Place", for those that have seen it! (Side note for any fans of the TV show "The Walking Dead", Douglas wife Lauren is in the current season of TWD).

08.01.2022 And it’s a wrap! Happy International Day of Sign Languages 2020! Thank you to all who participated, from Community Leaders, Community Members and all of you who watched and cheered this great initiative on! From all of us at Deaf Services and the Deaf Society

08.01.2022 We normalise deafness in the entire teaching and learning experience across the whole school @ Shenton. Inclusion is far from a tokenistic term - its a genuine and authentic attitude and experience. #shentondifference Did you know - we have several Deaf mentors and role models on staff? Accredited interpreters? Qualified ToDs? Exceptional teachers and leaders across the mainstream school who genuinely believe in inclusion? The formal learning of Auslan from Years 7 - 12 (inc...luding Auslan as an ATAR subject for WACE purposes, and available for study up to Cert IV in Auslan level)? Well, thats what you get at Shenton. The first deaf student to ever gain a direct entry pathway straight into the highly competitive medicine program at UWA just graduated from Shenton in 2019. We wish her all the best in 2020 and beyond in continuing to break down barriers, perceptions of deaf people, and changing the world for future generations. #muchmorethanmarks #learningforlife #auslanrocks . Captions are not yet showing on the speech below by Dr Justine Durno - a deaf medical Dr in the UK - presenting at the UN in BSL just a few days ago regarding the barriers faced by deaf students today...the English transcript is available in the comments, and the original BSL presentation by Dr Durno is accessible from 2:30 into the clip. Thanks for encapsulating your concerns and frustrations, and for additionally highlighting the capabilities of the wider Deaf community and young deaf people of today in your submission to the United Nations, Dr Durno. Clearly #deafcan !! They just need (a) access and (b) opportunity.

07.01.2022 So proud of our Indigenous Deaf and Hard of Hearing Youth who worked together on this video for the start of National Reconciliation Week 2019. This years t...heme is Grounded in Truth, Walk Together with Courage and these guys have shown truth, leadership and courage with this project. They also show us the importance of sign language to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sisters and brothers. Pls Share. #NRW2019 #aboriginalyouth #accessplus #signlanguage #Auslan.

05.01.2022 Have you seen the movie "Mao's Last Dancer"? Sophie is deaf, and she is Li and Mary's daughter...

05.01.2022 Featuring a young Deaf artist in the forefront (for a change!) in a performance of this nature, it is exciting to see an ex-Shenton deaf student - Hemi - taking the lead in this powerful piece, which has been lauded by Triple J, and has been picked up as an ABC news story. The musical group (including 4 deaf/hard of hearing artists) obtained arts project funding to develop their work and create this music video. Well done Hemi!!! We are proud of your many successes (on so many levels) since you left SCDEC.

03.01.2022 Many of the 32 million deaf children struggle to read. Powered by AI, #HUAWEI created #StorySign, an App that translates select childrens books into sign language to enrich story time for families. Discover the magical story: www.storysign.com

02.01.2022 Impressive use of depicting signs and constructed action - Auslan students in Years 10-12 in particular, take note of these features. Moral of this story is, of course, wash your hands (and keep up that social distancing)!

01.01.2022 A generous donation of $20,000 from Yellow Wiggle Emma Watkins will allow for a Yolngu sign language directory to hit the print house, protecting the native lan...guage for future generations. Yolngu sign language has been used for thousands of years not only for deaf conversation, but to hunt without scaring prey, to recognise cultural silences during mourning, or to conduct secret conversations. Over the past 25 years, anthropologist and linguist Bentley James has been compiling, documenting, photographing and writing all his learnings of the sign language in the hope of publishing a book to keep the form of communication alive. Emma was on ABC radio Darwin yesterday chatting about Yolngu Sign Language. #IYIL2019 #IY2019

01.01.2022 We are confident that the Auslan students at Shenton are simply THE best kids. From year to year we are blessed with absolutely divine students, who leave a genuine and lasting imprint on our hearts. This is especially true of the graduating cohorts, as they complete Year 12 Auslan, as we get to know them over so many years. This year, we are truly overjoyed at what the exceptional class of 2020 have achieved; the exemplary young people they have become; and we are bursting w...ith pride at the possibility of their futures. Yesterday, the graduating class of 2020 shared their kindness and generosity with us, in yet another example of what fabulous kids they are, by taking time out of their busy exam preparation and study schedule, to make us this treasured clip. Your flowers and carefully considered gifts were also greatly appreciated, class of 2020!! Best wishes for your exams next week - YOU GOT THIS!!! See more
