If you haven't yet visited this wonderful exhibition it's a great way to celebrate NAIDOC week 2020: Always Was, Always Will Be.

04.01.2022 This week we celebrate NAIDOC week. Many of the works in our current exhibition 'the TERRA within' speak directly to this year's theme 'Always Was, Always Will Be.' This image is Gordon Syron's 'An Aboriginal Perspective of Sydney Harbour, 2003' Of this work, Syron says:... "The year is 2003. Sydney, after the 2000 Olympics success, is a wonderful place to live. The sunsets on the edge of Sydney Harbour are an artist's dream. The orange and burnt yellow and the glow of ochres are imprinted on my mind forever. It is as if the clouds have opened up and this is heaven now. In the foreground of this painted is a self-portrait of me and my wife to be, Elaine sitting at a table with a cold drink in hand. Nearby are other tables served by Ned Kelly, one of our national icons. Aboriginal people dominate the scene. In the foreground is another table with Gary Foley sporting a shirt marked 'London, New York, Redfern'. I use this theme in my series of paintings as often as I can to remember Redfern, to give credit to Redfern as the cradle or the bridge between the traditional Aboriginal community and my heroes, who in the 70s and 80s, started the Aboriginal Legal Service, Aboriginal Medical Service, Land Councils, Aboriginal Childrens' Service, Black Theatre, Murawina, etc. In 2003 the Sydney harbour was still clean after the huge clean-up for the Olympics, and a whale actually meandered into the warm waters and performed for journos and tourists right in front of the of the Sydney Opera House. In 2003 a brave soul climbed onto a top sail of the Opera House and wrote NO WAR. I was impressed, it was a death-defying act of passion for his beliefs. On March 19, the USA declared war on Iraq and Australia followed and sent troops too. The Sydney Harbour Bridge is important and Australian icon too in it's own right. There is a strong beautiful dancer representing NAISDA and BANGARRA. Friendly female Mimi Spirits dance in the sky and the children are safe tonight. A pale moon is rising. The Redcoat is standing guard still since colonisation. The preacher man and others hover and Cross is hovering in the background always present. There is a tiny a Ayres Rock, now Uluru in the background representing the red centre and real culture."

03.01.2022 We had a wonderful visit from Euabalong West Public School today. Everyone spent time exploring the works from three exhibitions: the TERRA within, Meandering through the Landscape & The Collector's Daughter. Then Jill, Dustin, Lexi, Josh & Angus got busy in the Art Studio creating sculptural pieces with mixed media. Matt and Kim enjoyed some making as well.
