24.01.2022 It is with a heavy heart we advise that Slow Clay Centre has decided to cease face-to-face teaching from Friday 20 March until further notice. We are creating some exciting new ways to engage with clay and wish to encourage you to be positive and optimistic. Slow Clay Centre has never put money before community and we wish to thank our incredibly supportive community for the wonderful messages of love and encouragement. We commit to re-opening as soon as we can and send everyone our love. We are very aware that some will experience severe hardship during this time, whether health or financial, and we will do our best to walk along side you (from one metre!) at this difficult time.

19.01.2022 Ceramic space available in Melbourne. Nothing more needed to make and fire your creations. Access to the studio is 24x7. Message me or text me on 0452 404 949.

19.01.2022 Were so thrilled that we have been able to reinstate our upcoming Weekend Intensive wheel courses! Were fully booked for June, but still have spots available for the subsequent Weekend Intensives on September 19th - 20th, and October 31st - November 1st. We are extremely conscious of implementing best health practices and ensuring government social distancing guidelines are met, ongoing. Taught by Slow Clay founder Jane Sawyer (@janesawyer1 ), these Intensive courses offer ...a great introduction to the ergonomically sound methods that underpin all of our wheel classes, and are suitable to those at beginner or intermediate level (as Jane can offer some tailoring to the content). Intensives cover the same content as our eight-lesson term, packed into one weekend (10am-4pm both days) plus an optional glaze class (held a few weeks later). Content covered includes clay preparation, insight into Slow Clay techniques, solid working time, visual presentations and discussion. Whether you're itching to get back into the studio or swing of making, or looking for an introduction to Slow Clay methods, these Intensives are a great way to learn what we do over a weekend of educational fun! Bookings via slowclay.com (search Weekend Intensives). Nick Hannah . . . #slowclay #handmadeceramics #arteducation #thegoodlife #handmadeinmelbourne #melbournemade See more

19.01.2022 Slow Clay Updates Term 3 Lockdown - https://mailchi.mp/slowcl/slow-clay-updates-term-3-lockdown

19.01.2022 This is a wonderful blog post about the value and use of sketch books and drawing to develop a visual language. We recommend to all our students to keep a sketch book as they progress through our courses. And we also offer a specific drawing subject with the wonderful artist Sarah Tomasetti as part of our Studio Practice Program (SPP). Many students feel overwhelmed and incapable of knowing where to start, unless they already have an art background, but we stress it is a priv...ate sketch book and they do not need to show it to anyone. Developing a unique visual language feeds into developing a unique sense of touch with clay. The two are linked but different as the choice of materials brings its own voice to the relationship. Drawing, like making, gives you to opportunity to process and grow from the seeds of an idea. Where you end up may be totally different to where you started and this is part of the joy of it all! 18.01.2022 If you have been to Slow Clay Centre, you will surely have seen @sabri.talarico busy in the office or teaching our kids class. Not only is Sabrina an administrative whiz, but she is also a skilled ceramic artist and videographer, and has a degree in arts therapy. She shared this lovely video in response to our reflection on daily ritual(s)/tea ceremony. Doesn't it capture the warm and grounding aura of this simple act so well? 18.01.2022 More of Jane Sawyers work appearing at Maunsell Wickes until 30 August. Enquires to the gallery!

18.01.2022 Whats on your bookshelf? During this time of enforced slow-down, we are more in need of nurturing and connection than ever. Wed love to hear about your personal sources of inspiration and learning. Are you currently engaged more with digital content or are you taking a hiatus from the technological world to embrace a more tactile approach? Perhaps a combination of both If you are unable to touch clay at the moment (due to studio closures such as ours), are you able to use ...your time to connect with design, drawing or reading? With all that is going on, we will be posting a series of discussion points over the coming weeks, that invite all makers to partake in meaningful conversations with us about connection: how and why we do what we doThis post encourages you to turn to your bookshelf and dive deep into a book! Why not make a cup of tea in your favourite hand made cup and curl up somewhere warm and let us know what you are reading! . . #slowclay #slowliving #creativetalk #thegoodlife #creativequarantine #melbournemade #slowclaycentre #deepthinking See more

17.01.2022 Having fun in lockdown!

16.01.2022 We have some fantastic pieces by Varuni Kanagasundaram available at our annual COLLECTIVE X SLOW CLAY! This year we’ve asked 10 of our favourite Victorian artists to show 10 pieces each that respond to the theme 'Limited Edition 2020', in whatever way they choose! Varuni’s practice explores the universal meaning of rituals of the Indian subcontinent. Here is a sneak peak of some of her work that will be available at this year’s COLLECTIVE exhibition, and accompanying artist s...tatement: The ceramic artworks in the form of ritual objects of offering convey the textiles, designs, colours and markings of the Indian subcontinent. They try to evoke a sense of tactility, preciousness, vibrancy as well as curiosity. The forms respond to a limited edition series as bolts of fabric in ceramic, scrolls or ceramic objects that capture the folds of fabric. Southern ice porcelain paper clay or fabric impregnated with Southern ice porcelain slip brings out the delicacy of forms and also the vivid colours of the pigments of the East. Migrant stories are embodied within these ritual objects. by Michael Lam COLLECTIVE X SLOW CLAY: Limited Edition 2020 - running online at slowclay.com 1-13 December (physical viewing of the work available in the studio on these dates, 11am-4pm daily). . . #slowclay #collectivexslowclay #collectivexslowclay2020 #australianceramics #melbourneceramics #onlineexebition #shoplocal #contemporaryceramics #supportlocal #melbourneceramics #melbourneartist #ceramicsaustralia See more

15.01.2022 Slow Clay November Newsletter - https://mailchi.mp/slowclay/slow-clay-september-newsletter

15.01.2022 Slow Clay teachers have been busy in the lockdown. Huge congratulations to Grace Brown who is showing her beautiful "Lost Worlds" at The Stockroom Kyneton. And yes, it's in Stage 3 but you can enquire direct to the gallery for images! https://stockroomspace.com/grace-brown

15.01.2022 Of course, we have some pieces by Slow Clay founder @janesawyer1 available at this year’s COLLECTIVE X SLOW CLAY: A Limited Edition 2020! Fluid, gestural and tactile, @janesawyer1’s ceramic art reflects her interest in movement. In this series, freshly-thrown walls of clay are manipulated, slumped and shaken to induce collapse. The changed form has echoes of the circularity of the original form and yet the collapsed form suggests movement is possible. Perhaps it is not an e...nd but is rather a beginning of something still to be explored which she does by freezing the forms into strange contortions and wrapping them in layers of contrasting fluid clay and dripping glaze. Each piece has a corresponding wall hook made from the same clay that drapes these collapsed pieces over them to provide an illusion of dripping fluidity and softness creating a tension between the known and unknown: the frozen hard ceramic material and the illusion of soft drapery. Works made for the COLLECTIVE X SLOW CLAY: A Limited Edition 2020 provide an opportunity to explore repetition and were made during Melbourne’s second lockdown in 2020, the year of change and uncertainty. COLLECTIVE X SLOW CLAY: A Limited Edition 2020 - running online at slowclay.com 1-13 December (physical viewing of the work available in the studio, 11am-4pm daily). . . #slowclay #collectivexslowclay #collectivexslowclay2020 #australianceramics #melbourneceramics #onlineexhibition #shoplocalmelbourne #contemporaryceramics #melbourneceramics #melbourneartist #ceramicsaustralia See more

13.01.2022 Covid-19 advice for students and visitors: We are following the governments guidelines to "notice the signs" and "reduce the spread. We therefore ask all people entering Slow Clay Centre to be mindful of any possible fever, cough and infection, or exposure to anyone with these symptoms, and to seek medical advice and isolate themselves rather than attending. At Slow Clay Centre our cleaners are using disinfectant on all surfaces daily and staff are also advised to stay home if symptomatic. If we have a case of Covid-19 within our community and are advised to close we will refund any remaining unused fees or transfer you to another class up to 12 months in the future at no extra cost. Thank you for your cooperation and wishing you good health!

12.01.2022 Student work appreciation post We love the brush strokes on this piece, and lovely contrast and depth they create! This image was taken fresh out of the kiln, though we'd like to thank those who have sent us images of your work in their new homes - it is so nice for us to see their full journey - keep them coming! A note to students who have not yet picked up their work from last term: we are offering more collection times this week and the next on Wednesday 3 and 10 June (10am - 1pm), and Saturday 6 and 13 June (10am - 12noon). . . #slowclay #handmadeceramics #arteducation #thegoodlife #handmadeinmelbourne #melbournemade #slowclaycentre

12.01.2022 difficult decision but...about time we say....

11.01.2022 We started filming our first online course this week! Theres been a lot to learn, but weve certainly been having fun! A huge shout-out to @yarracityarts who gave us some seed funding to get some online courses happening. We are forever grateful for this opportunity to explore new ways of learning and delivering educational content to our community, many who are vulnerable or cannot attend classes due to geographical distance. Were lucky to have the BEST team on the job! S...abrina Talarico and Geoff Bartlett on the cameras, and Ruth Luthi on curriculum development means Slow Clay director Jane Sawyer just has to learn how to smile in front of a camera . . . #slowclay #handmadeceramics #arteducation #thegoodlife #handmadeinmelbourne #melbournemade #onlinelearning @ Slow Clay Centre See more

08.01.2022 Huge congratulations to the incredible Sarah Tomasetti for winning the John Leslie Art Prize! Sarah is a teacher in our Professional Development Program and Studio Practice Program. Slow Clay students will know her as a warm, generous, highly skilled and knowledgeable artist and a teacher who lifts her students up and gives them everything! Sarahs fresco paintings are poetic, mysterious, atmospheric and profoundly evocative and this is such a deserving win for a wonderful person and a wonderful painting/fresco Mt Kailash from Above.

07.01.2022 If anyone is wondering why we didn't wait until the end of term to close Slow Clay Centre, or wait for the government to tell us, this is the answer. It's a heartfelt message from the Covid frontline in Italy. Watch it to the end. We are imploring all our community to stay home, do not gather in groups, take the necessary health precautions, and please keep well. There are no jokes or laughs that we can offer - this is serious. Thanks Merran Esson for posting.

07.01.2022 @craftiek is the first student through the doors to collect work from last term, and we are all so excited! A reminder to students that last terms work must be collected on the same day of the week as their class last term, between 10am-1pm only. Or Saturday 23/5, 10-1, as a last resort! . . #slowclay #handmadeceramics #madeinmelbourne #thegoodlife #creativequarantine #melbournemade #slowclaycentre
