01.01.2022 Hi all, We’d like to take the chance to discuss the difference between back burning and hazard reduction. Back Burning is a firefighting technique. In other words you fight fire with fire. It can be used to burn fuel prior to the main firefront arriving. Refer to image backburning #1. It then creates an area which can no longer be affected. This is because stuff which has already been burnt can't be burnt again ! This is commonly used when water isn't available, or when the ...fire is much too large. Another example is in backburning #2. Hazard reduction is a process that takes place preemptively to protect land and property before a fire approaches. It can be 'targeted burning' of certain areas by firefighters to reduce the spread of fires in the near future, but it doesn't always involve burning land. However most hazard reductions are performed with fire. Another way of telling the difference, is back burns are generally performed within the fire season and hazard reductions outside. The main agencies who plan hazard reductions are the New South Wales rural fire service, and National Parks and Wildlife Service. Throughout the fire season you must contact your local fire control centre for approval to burn. If you would like to do a Hazard reduction burn and live within the Clarence Valley please contact the Clarence Valley Fire Control Centre on 66445135.
