In addition to maintaining the centre and taking bookings we fired up the pizza oven once a month (when COVID safe); welcomed the weekly craft group, yoga meet ups, held the annual Christmas brunch, organised a Festival of Small Halls event, lobbied for the RFS Southport's Community Bushfire Safety Plan (launched at the centre on 7 December); held a Southport market, organised Eric Woehler's talk about nesting seabirds as part of a grant from the council, worked on the reprint of a local history book, new logo and part share of equipment from a Bushfire Recovery Grant and welcome wayraparattee child and family centre as well as other early childhood meet ups for far south families. Thanks to everyone who supported these activities!

23.01.2022 Great monthly gardening tips from the foodgardengroup.blogspot.com Here is their July job list Remove weeds now before they begin to grow and become a problem in spring Make big changes to your food garden’s bed, paths or irrigation at this quiet time... Cut up and work in green manures you sowed in autumn if you need the space Repair or replace tools before things get busy again in spring Vegetables Sow in pots spring and salad onions Sow in your hothouse early cherry-type tomatoes Sow in your garden broadbeans and peas (if you don’t get heavy frosts), winter varieties of spinach (try sowing one row every fortnight) Plant leek and onion seedlings (after applying some lime or dolomite) Cut off old asparagus stalks, add compost and add new asparagus crowns Divide and replant clumps of chives and other perennial onions Divide rhubarb and re-plant in well-draining soil with plenty of fertiliser and compost Apply lime where needed so spring crops will benefit Apply compost where needed so spring crops will benefit Foliar-feed crops once a month with seaweed extract to maximise their health and growth If you have a hothouse: thoroughly clean it and give it a good airing to get rid of pests Plan roughly what you want to grow this coming season and purchase seeds Fruit trees and berries (* = don't repeat if already done recently) Tidy up strawberry beds, replace 3-year old plants and feed each plant Remove all fruit tree litter and loose bark and discard this Remove all weeds under and around fruit trees Remove old unproductive passionfruit vines Tidy up and prune berry bushes Prune apple, pear, quince and cherry trees if this was not done in autumn Prune grape vines back hard while they are dormant Spray peach and nectarine trees and the ground under them with curly leaf fungicide Plant new blueberries and give them blood and bone and pine needle mulch Plant new (bare-rooted) fruit trees, berry canes and grapes Move a fruit tree if it needs to be moved. Now is still a good time to do this. Plant new blueberry bushes Feed all blueberry bushes a generous amount of blood & bone and mulch them Apply dolomite or lime to peach, nectarine, apple and pear trees if pH is below 6.5 (*) Apply potash to apple and pear trees - they will love you for doing so (*) Give all fruit trees a generous amount of woody mulch Spread compost, old manure, complete organic fertiliser around fruit trees and berries (*) Put chooks around your fruit trees while they are dormant to get rid of pests Protect fruit tree trunks and roots if your chooks are damaging them Apply whip and tongue grafts to Japanese and early plum varieties from mid-July Collect scions of dormant fruit trees and store in fridge for grafting later in the season (*)

05.01.2022 You need more than a torch to go into Mystery Creek. Caving is inherently dangerous. In this cave system in 1990, three people died when a school group was caught underground by flash flooding. It’s something I reflect on as Janine performs some last-minute checks of her equipment and her husband Ric triple checks her double checks. Cave diving is technical.

01.01.2022 Hello everyone, I hope you're all doing well? I needed to post as something really exciting is happening with our market and in our small town! Firstly, Dov...er Community Mums Market will now be in the expert hands of our local community group DASAG, Dover & South Action Group, our name will change to simply "Dover Market" and stall fees will be set at $5 which will cover you insurance wise while at our market, same place, same great atmosphere but more organised for a big future Secondly, DASAG have recently taken over the tiny kiosk in Southgate shopping centre, this space will become Dover's "Community Hub" a place for visitors to get ideas on local attractions, eateries, businesses and will also have a collection of local goodies for sale, this hub will be manned by local volunteers with local knowledge and friendly smiles. This is a fantastic addition to Dover. Finally, we are having a "Grand Opening" of the community hub on Sunday the 16th August from 10am-2pm, which is also normal market date and we are seeking stallholders. There will be ice cream and coffee on offer plus the Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be officially launching the Dover Community Hub at 11am. We have the wonderful - Yeasty Beasty doughnuts Concordia skincare Kaye Coulson with her jams & baked goods Eunice Dewhurst with her knitted toys. that are attending so far and we would like to add more range to our market stalls. So if you make things, bake things, grow things or have good secondhand things and would like to attend please text either; Lydia Eastley - 0400 134 388 or myself, Tina Carver - 0477 788 267 and leave your name, contact details and what you would like to sell and we will contact you. Alternatively you can comment on this post and we'll be in touch via DM. Wow, I think that's all for now, I'll update the page name soon and we hope to see lots (social distancing of course) of locals and visitors back enjoying markets and celebrating this fantastic new hub for our town T.C Please share TIA. #localisbest #dovermarket #funandfriendly

01.01.2022 If your selecting a light fitting for home remember to make sure it points towards the ground. Up/ down luminaries like this send over a third of their energy straight into the sky, creating havoc for wildlife and contributing directly to light pollution. #darkskytasmania #lightpollution
