25.01.2022 We appreciate all donations and fundraising efforts. We keep a small team with very low overheads in order to ensure the maximum amount of donated funds go straight to cure-related research. In addition to running a lean business, we lobby government. Last year we were successful in getting the NSW government to invest $15 million for SCI research. We will continue to work hard to influence the government to provide more cure-related funding, adapt policy, and foster collaboration between researchers.

24.01.2022 People with spinal cord injuries often suffer chronic and debilitating pain. Many treatment options are not effective and sometimes have severe side-effects which worsen the condition. Researchers at University of Sydney have been awarded $1.7 million to research if cannabidiol is an effective treatment, $1.45 million of which came from $15 million SpinalCure secured in the NSW government budget. We are thrilled to have helped support this important research. ... https://www.sydney.edu.au//Medical-cannabis-study-spinal-i

22.01.2022 SpinalCure is committed to making a cure for spinal cord injury not only achievable but available, funding breakthrough technologies, supporting those who question the old science and embrace the new, and collaborating with powerful partners who share our bold vision. We would like to announce an exciting partnership with The CatWalk Trust in New Zealand. SpinalCure has known the CatWalk team for many years and their desire to find a cure for spinal cord injury aligns with o...urs. With us, they are co-funding Australia’s first exciting neurostimulation trial soon to commence in Sydney at NeuRA. This trial is a vital step towards the development of a neurostimulation treatment that could be offered to the SCI population globally. The CatWalk Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Research Trust was founded in 2005 by Catriona Williams MNZM, formerly one of New Zealand’s leading international equestrian riders. Following a riding accident in 2002, she is now C6/C7 tetraplegic and confined to a wheelchair. A cure for paralysis was Williams’ dream and so CatWalk was born. They believe in supporting researchers in the very realistic bid for a cure for spinal cord injuries. By establishing the partnership with The CatWalk Trust we are able to share vital information with each other, help raise funds for developing research, and bring more focus to medical breakthroughs. We are excited to grow this relationship in hopes of accelerating cure based treatments to people with paralysis in the near future. https://www.catwalk.org.nz/

22.01.2022 Our Person of Interest for the month of September is the multi-talented Tasmanian, Bradley Trevor Greive AM, who wrote the best-seller Penguin Bloom, The Odd Little Bird Who Saved a Family, as well as the new book Sam Bloom, Heartache & Birdsong. For four years he researched spinal cord injury (SCI) and spent thousands of hours interviewing Sam and her family time which resulted in these thoughtful, honest and beautiful books. BTG has had a long, distinguished creative car...eer, with notable works in television, radio, cartoon, and stage. He currently produces wildlife documentaries, and has even designed roller coasters for Walt Disney theme parks. His award-winning books have sold over 30,000,000 copies in 115 countries, and he supports numerous conservation, arts and literacy projects throughout the world. In addition to being the world's highest selling humorist, he served in the Australian Army, as a paratrooper commander, is a former Polynesian rock-lifting champion, and also completed cosmonaut training with the Russian space Program. Normally an intensely private person, BTG has graciously answered questions about his involvement with the Blooms, whom he regards as his own family, his interest in SCI and some of his work. 22.01.2022 SpinalCure Ambassador Sam Bloom is doing so much to bring awareness to SCI, medical research and the need for additional funding. She has been especially busy recently, appearing on The Project as well as many other outlets to promote her new book and the international world premiere of Penguin Bloom, the movie based on her best-selling, award winning book at the Toronto Film Festival. We’d like to take this time to thank Sam and her family for all they do. We can’t wait for... the movie to arrive on our shores. And a reminder that anyone who donates $100 or more this week will go into the draw to win both books, graciously signed by Sam. You can also order her new book from the link below. https://shop.bookoccino.com.au/p/biography-memoir-sam-bloom https://www.facebook.com/TheProjectTV/videos/2353209144975126

17.01.2022 With our heartfelt thanks to everyone of you that has supported SpinalCure Australia this year, either by following us on social media, subscribing to our newsletters, making a one-off or monthly donation, participating in a community or corporate fundraiser - we are truly grateful... From the SpinalCure team we'd like to wish you a very Merry Christmas!

14.01.2022 Not all spinal cord injuries are the same. The higher the injury on the spinal cord generally translates to more dysfunction. The severity of the injury also affects the level of dysfunction, so people with similarly located injuries might be affected differently.

10.01.2022 Recently we've been posting stories of people with SCIs. These posts along with our posts from SCI awareness week (5 - 11 September) have received a great response. A lot of focus is given to traumatic injuries, but we'd like to share stories of non-traumatic injuries as well. These can be caused by bacterial infections e.g. tuberculosis, viral infections e.g. transverse myelitis, blood clots (thrombosis) or haemorrhage (bleeding), non-malignant growths (tumours) which pres...s on the spinal cord, birth defects e.g. spina bifida. The resulting injuries can present as: Transverse Myelitis Cauda Equina Spinal Stroke Spinal Tumours Arteriovenous Malformation Cavernous malformations Central Cord Syndrome Brown-Séquard Syndrome Anterior Cord Syndrome Posterior Cord Syndrome Guillain-Barre Syndrome Sacral Sparing Spina Bifida Polio If you have a non-traumatic SCI and would like to share your story, please message us or email [email protected]

09.01.2022 We have been delighted by the recognition the people in the SCI community have received this year in Australia. Our Co-Founder and Scientific Chair since 1995, Emeritus Professor Perry Bartlett AO FAA, was included in the Queen’s Birthday 2020 Honours List. He was nationally recognised for his distinguished service and lifetime dedication to neuroscience research and to people living with spinal cord injury. More recently Dr Dinesh Palipana OAM was awarded as the Queensland's 2021 Australian of the Year. The 36 year old is the founder of Doctors with Disabilities, has contributed immensely to spinal research, is a recent law graduate, and is the doctor for the Gold Coast Titans physical disability rugby league team. The team at SpinalCure would like to heartily congratulate both men and to thank them for their continued efforts!

09.01.2022 Meet Dean Martelozzo - One of our 2020-2021 Community Ambassadors It’s an honour to be selected for the inaugural community ambassador program. As a paraplegic, the search for a cure is close to my heart and I’m excited to contribute to SpinalCure's vision as well as furthering the teams’ efforts to secure funding, raise awareness and educate the general public about what SpinalCure stands for. I applied because as I’m sure anyone could imagine, I’ve dreamt of a cure since t...he day I broke my back. Until that day, I didn’t know anybody that had suffered a spinal injury, so it came as quite a shock - the learning curve was steep. I think it's important to help people understand that the consequences of a spinal cord injury go well beyond physical limitations and not being able to walk. However, it is also important to recognise the difference between being limited and being incapable. I think that education is the key to advancing awareness, which in turn can act as a motivator for directing efforts to improve treatment methods and eventually a cure. I think it’s not a matter of if, but when a cure will be found. The fastest way there is to invest in research. I’m really excited to become part of a team, strengthen connections with the community and work towards the shared objective of curing spinal cord injuries." Thanks Dean for applying from the SpinalCure team! We are so pleased to have you onboard.

06.01.2022 Tom Elphick featured in The Australian earlier this week and is our Person of Interest for the month of December. Tom was an aspiring professional dancer and overseas student at Codarts University in Rotterdam with a promising career ahead of him. His dreams and plans were abruptly ended during a holiday to Portugal when he dove into a wave and hit a sandbank. Five years on from his injury Tom has been able to make massive strides and is challenging himself to complete a hal...f marathon on behalf of SpinalCure in January next year. To read more about Tom's story and his fundraising plans please visit here: https://www.spinalcure.org.au/news/tom-elphicks-story/

04.01.2022 We’d like to extend our gratitude to the ongoing support of The Neilson Foundation. Over five years, the Foundation has graciously donated $3 million in support of spinal cord injury research. Their generous and continued support has been pivotal in bringing neurostimulation research to Australia and establishing the Spinal Cord Injury Research Centre at NeuRA. We were very pleased to have Paris Neilson visit the new Spinal Cord Injury Research Centre early this spring to obs...erve the technology that will be used in the eWALK trial. SpinalCure Ambassador Sam Bloom dedicated her time to help the researchers demonstrate the practical application. If you'd like to donate, please visit our website at https://www.spinalcure.org.au/get-involved/donate/

04.01.2022 We share this image often because we know that a picture is worth a thousand words. We hope it helps people realise that spinal cord injuries occur with shocking frequency. And they don’t just affect the injured, but also their families and the community. Please feel free to share this image to help increase awareness of the impact spinal cord injuries have on all Australians.

01.01.2022 Non-traumatic spinal cord injury occurs when the spinal cord is damaged by something other than major trauma. Many medical issues can lead to these injuries. In fact things like tumours and degenerative disorders are the leading cause of SCIs in people over the age of 65 and account for 41% of all spinal cord injuries in Australia. Barbara has experienced a non-traumatic spinal cord injury. She has graciously shared her story. To read her journey, please click the link below. https://www.spinalcure.org.au//non-traumatic-spinal-cord-/
