20.01.2022 You have heard of the phrase, fight of flight It is our way of responding when we feel stress. When we perceive danger or a threat our brain sends a signal to our body to fight or fight the danger. After parenting my own children and working with other peoples I believe I dont know is used by many children as a form of flight or fight. There are a number of reasons children may say "I dont know". Read the latest blog for the reasons and how to help your child to think. https://www.strengthheroes.com.au/blog-streng/idontknowblog

20.01.2022 I was once asked by a mum in a toddler class if she should be teaching her two year old how to hold a marker properly. My answer NO! Experts agree and I love this quick article by Rae Pica who I recently had the opportunity to listen to. Thanks to Teacher Tom and Fairy Dust Teaching who hosted an amazing Play First Summit where Rae Pica Keynotes & Consulting spoke so passionately about nurturing childhood as a time of play and curiousity and not early academics. 20.01.2022 This week the kids explored how we can take our "mess" and create an abstract art piece. The kids pieces started without intention. They were doing colour mixing to paint their clay work and I gave them pieces of paper with the instruction to capture the colours they created. Then this week I showed them the work of Wassily Kandinsky and then posed the question: " How could you use his style using your meas? In our classes our creatives dont produce cookie cutter art. We invite children to explore, be curious and play with different styles and techniques. We used paint pens, collage, chalk and oil pastels and sharpies. I was blown away by how our 6-10s answered my question. #mistakemaker #strengthheroes #artkids #art #schoolholidayactivities #schoolholidayactivitiesperth #artworkshops

19.01.2022 Spotlight on our programs - Artside the Square. The Mo, Evie and Otis Maslin Foundation, together with the Dyslexia-SPELD Foundation DSF Literacy Services (The Dyslexia Speld Foundation of WA) (DSF) have engaged Strength Heroes to run some very special workshops. Students in years 3 to 6 with a learning difficulty (including dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia) are invited to take part in the workshops as part of Dyslexia Awareness Week 2020. Participants will be given t...he opportunity to create a piece of art based on finding their inner strength hero which will then be framed to take home. Our art and play workshops empower children deal with lifes challenges. The art workshops will be held on Thursday 1 October at the The Art Space Collective in Scarborough a morning and afternoon session: and Monday 5 October in South Perth also a morning or afternoon session; and a fee to cover costs will be charged. 18.01.2022 With many schools having their sports day this term, many parents are at their wits end trying to support their children who would rather avoid the day altogether. Even though it may be hard make sure your child knows that missing sports day is not an option. Resilience is about showing up and having a go. Your child does not have to enjoy it but by helping them cope with situations that cause BIG emotions you are teaching them important life lessons. In this weeks blog, I give you way to get your kids to show up and be ready to try even if sport is not something they are naturally good at. 13.01.2022 5 things you can do to help your child deal with BIG emotions

13.01.2022 The way we develop resilience is based in error based learning aka making mistakes! Research has shown that mistakes cause your brain to spark and grow. We use error based learning by putting children in situations where they make mistakes - such as working with clay, weaving etc and giving them the tools to understand and then think and act helpfully to move through their stretch zone. This week the kids at @Kids Active - Canning Vale got to practice their claywork skills for the second week. It was great to see their awareness grow that mistake making (aka practice) made them better at clay. Of course its always done in a way that is kind, respectful and encourages curiousity.

12.01.2022 The cherry on top of a great week of enrollments for our Mistake Maker Club and Toddler Art term programs that all start next week. With only 2 spots left in our term workshop suite I am REALLY pleased. Was not sure if we would fill all our classes post COVID economy. Its so pleasing and uplifting that the majority of parents who are joining us for the first time have indicated that they have been recommended to us through word of mouth. Its the sweetest and most meaningful feedback of all. Thanks to all of you who support us and believe in our mission to help support families and little creatives to develop the art of resilience. Special thanks to Mt Hawthorn Hub and Mount Hawthorn Playgroup The Art Space Collective and Quintilian School your continued support.

11.01.2022 Practice makes perfect - really? In this post I give 5 tips for helping children who have a tendency to focus on perfectionism.

10.01.2022 Rise and shine, only 12 hours to bed time. Thanks Lenny Lemons

10.01.2022 In terms of resilience I pride myself on being very determined and facing obstacles head on. However sticking to regular exercise has been my Mt Everest. Two years ago I joined Peak Body Health & Fitness having last being in a gym in my mid 20s (in case your wondering, a VERY long time ago). I am not exactly the gym type but I decided to join the strengths training group and for the first six months I had to fight my unhelpful thoughts that kept telling me a million diff...erent reasons why the gym was not my place. However, with perseverance and a growth mindset I am now attend regularly and it is part of my weekly routine. BIG shout out to the welcoming staff (you know who you are) and members at Peak Body for being so inclusive and appreciating every body of ALL abilities. Now, not only am I stronger but my weights training helps me manage the stress of owning a small business and carry all those containers for our workshops. See more

06.01.2022 PAY IT FORWARD. Lets just say, there was a misunderstanding and it involved toast at @littleguildford My mistake entirely in ordering and could not have been more impressed with the customer service and attitude of the owner, it was an example of the customer is always right...even when I wasnt (bit embarrassed by it all). So this week, my mission is to pay it forward as suggested by the owner when I tried to fix my mistake. Loved the homemade toast and amazing jam - apricot and passionfruit. How can you pay it forward this week?

04.01.2022 Those who have been around for a while know that I have two older children. However, it just seems like yesterday I was saying to my husband, "Wow, in 2020 she will be graduating highschool and I will be knocking on the door of a big birthday!" Looking back on our parenting journey there are a few things I wish I had told my younger self. The first is "Most of the things that your kids cant do or dont want to do not matter." For example, my youngest hated piano and my o...ldest suddenly did not want to put her head under in swimming lessons when she was young. I wasted a LOT of time and energy thinking and putting in place things that motivated them to try. And now my youngest has taught herself to play piano and then got lessons and my reluctant swimmer loves getting her face wet. Most kids will not suffer as a result or be adversly affected by things they are worried about, cant do or are not interested in. I would have told my younger self to forget the lessons and spend the time doing something fun together because the time when they are young and you have them all to yourself goes in the blink of an eye. #parentinglife #parenting #perthmums #perthmummas See more
