24.01.2022 WELCOME TO THE JUNIOR SCHOOL’S VIRTUAL FESTIVAL OF LEARNING WEEK - PART 10 OF 12

24.01.2022 Today in the Kinder Minus One Transition Program the children explored the idea of learning as a process of individual and group construction. The children exchanged ideas, negotiated and collaborated to construct a town and to redefine spaces within the classroom for other purposes. New friendships have been formed and we look forward to the new year and the new possibilities.

23.01.2022 This week our Kinder Minus One children explored motion. We looked at how the weight and size of vehicles affected the distance and speed travelled. The children also enjoyed looking at things through the concave and convex lenses.

17.01.2022 TODAY IS ‘TRANSITION DAY’ FOR ST SPYRIDON COLLEGE It’s a bitter-sweet day today. This Wednesday, 30th September 2020, is the last day of outstanding service for... our retiring Head of St Spyridon College, Mrs Efrosini Stefanou, following 20 years at the helm of our School and the passing of the baton to our new Head of College, Mrs Amelia Katsogiannis who, as Principal of the Senior School and as Deputy Head of College has been a loyal and diligent support all these years. FAREWELL LUNCH AND VALEDICTORY SPEECHES Our Parish and our College farewelled Mrs Efrosini fittingly at an official Lunch event held at The Roxy Function Centre at bayside Brighton-le-Sands in Sydney last Sunday 27th September. The Farewell Lunch was honoured by the presence of our Primate and Father, Archbishop Makarios of Australia and His Eminence Metropolitan Seraphim of Sevasteia. In attendance were our Reverend Clergy, past and present members of the Board of Directors and the Board of Governors, past and present members of the Parents and Friends Association, members of the Executive and Teaching staffs, members of the ancillary staff of the Parish and the College, together with members of the Stefanou-Haag family. ADDRESSES Speakers at the Farewell event were the Parish President Mr Con Livissianis and Parish Priest Father Steven Scoutas who spoke from the heart in their official capacities about the glowing legacy being left to St Spyridon College by Mrs Efrosini Stefanou who has given two decades of inspired leadership to the School. After congratulating her on a job well done, they wished her a fulfilling retirement. During her tenure, the retiring Head took the College to the next level of sophistication, delivered glowing results for the College during the periodic Random Inspections conducted by the NSW Education Standards Authority, produced four five-year Strategic Plans which culminated in the College being ranked in the top 100 schools of the State at the HSC exams, coming 62nd out of 811 schools in 2016, and cultivated an educational culture of excellence for both students and teachers. VALEDICTORY RESPONSE Mrs Stefanou gave the Valedictory Response, expressing her gratitude to Father Steven, the St Spyridon Parish and College Boards and the school community, recalling the enormous support of the late Archbishop Stylianos of blessed memory and of His Eminence Metropolitan Seraphim of Sevasteia from her first day at the College. The retiring Head of College expressed her heartfelt gratitude to His Eminence Archbishop Makarios for his paternal support since his Election as primate of Australia and for honouring her humble person with his presence at her Farewell Lunch. Mrs Stefanou reserved special thanks for the amazing teachers she had the privilege of leading over the years and for the beautiful students she had the joy of serving. Particular gratitude was expressed to the Parish Executive Officer Mrs Christina Tsaconas, to her Personal Assistant Mrs Angela Kringas and to her loving family. PATERNAL ADDRESS BY ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS Archbishop Makarios referred to Mrs Stefanou as a leader of extraordinary service who successfully integrated the Orthodox Faith and the Hellenic Culture into the overall curriculum taught to our students, making St Spyridon College a source of pride not only for St Spyridon Parish but for the Archdiocese of Australia as a whole. His Eminence also expressed a broader view that, after several generations of young people graduating with Degrees and Doctorates from Universities around the globe, our world, instead of being a better place, has remained troubled and confused. And this, because, as the Fathers of the Church say, schools and universities should primarily be teaching the attainment of virtues such as compassion, love, forgiveness, truthfulness and respect for fellow-humans as priorities. Archbishop Makarios congratulated Mrs Stefanou on a career of distinction as Head of College and expressed the hope that she will continue contributing, researching, reading, lecturing and enjoying her family. His Eminence also congratulated Mrs Amelia Katsogiannis on being appointed the new Head of College, wished her strength and looked forward to collaborating with her for the benefit of the younger generations. After the exchanging of gifts, His Eminence and Mrs Stefanou, together, cut the congratulatory cake then participated in a session of photo opportunities which included all present. It was a most enjoyable and memorable afternoon. WELCOME TO MRS AMELIA KATSOGIANNIS From this afternoon, Mrs Amelia Katsogiannis commences her tenure as the new Head of College at St Spyridon. Our Parish, our School community, the Archdiocese and our Greek Australian people, generally, are grateful and confident that, as a new era commences, we can look forward to continuing quality education for the present and future generations and a positive, forward-thinking direction which will adapt to the challenges of a changing world. Mrs Katsogiannis, we wish you health, vision and inspiration from Above as you take the reigns of St Spyridon College from today. May God be with you, through the intercessions of St Spyridon the Wonder-Worker. THE BATON HAS NOW BEEN PASSED ON AS WE ENTER A NEW ERA

07.01.2022 The Feast of the Epiphany: The Baptism of our Lord, God and Saviour Jesus Christ On the 6th of January each year, the Orthodox Church celebrates the Baptism of our Lord, also known as the Theophany or Epiphany. The word Theophany is derived from the Greek word which means ‘revelation of God’, while the word Epiphany comes from the Greek word which means to ‘shine upon’. These terms refer to the fact that at the Baptism of our Lord, the fullness of God was ...revealed and shone upon the world. At the commencement of our Lord’s public teaching and healing ministry, our Lord Jesus came from Galilee to St. John at the Jordan River to be baptised by him. St. John was surprised and said, "It is you who should baptise me." However Jesus replied, "Let us do what God asks of us" (Matthew 3: 13-15). As soon as St. John baptised our Lord, the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit appeared in the form of a dove and a voice came from Heaven saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased" (Matthew 3: 13-17). This is the first revelation of the fullness of the Holy Trinity: the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. By being baptised in the waters of the River Jordan, our Lord Jesus sanctifies the entire world and also establishes the Sacrament of Holy Baptism through which we become members of the Orthodox Church and are granted eternal life in God’s heavenly kingdom. In the running waters of the Jordan River, on this day the Lord of all cries out to John: Do not be afraid nor hesitate to baptise Me, for I have come to save Adam, the first-formed man (Kontakion 4th Tone for the Feast of the Epiphany).

05.01.2022 Last Friday our new cohort of Year 7 2021 visited the Senior School for their Orientation Day. Students had opportunity to get to know the school and their peers during the first part of the day with the assistance of Peer Support Leaders from Year 9. Later they experienced a range of Taster Lessons. It was a fabulous start for everyone and the butterflies and anticipation visible on faces of some clearly disappeared by the end of the day. We look forward to welcoming everyone back next year.

01.01.2022 Traditionally, at Christmas time, the students of St Spyridon College visit many local Parish homes every year to spread the Christmas spirit and sing "Ta Kalan...ta" (traditional Greek Christmas carols). Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions we have been unable to visit any local homes this year. However, the students of St Spyridon College wanted to continue this annual tradition and have prepared something special to share with you all. We know this will bring smiles to your faces. On behalf St Spyridon Parish and St Spyridon College, we take this opportunity to wish you and your families a blessed, healthy and safe Christmas.
