23.01.2022 Blog! We are currently witnessing and living through unprecedented times. We are fighting an invisible enemy that has wiped out entire groups of people through death. It has overwhelmed our hospitals, it has taken our freedom, it has shut down our businesses and taken our jobs. It has isolated us from our loved ones and our community at large. Whilst the events that have unravelled over the past few months and weeks may seem quite overwhelming, it is far too easy, and albeit ...even normal, to feel a paralysing sense of despair, anguish and depression. But amidst all the affliction; all hope is not yet lost. Although we may be experiencing adversity and sufferings, we have an antidote to that suffering. And that antidote - I would argue, is beauty. Dosteovsky famously tells us that: 'beauty will save the world.' In the blog post, I discuss the importance of beauty; and how it truly has the potential to save the world: to restore hope and provide us with joy and consolation; especially in the midst of our brokenness. As Vincent Van Gogh says, "art is to console those that are broken by life." . Link below. https://www.studioelachi.com.au//10o4u87ffpxkg9a5x7sosvf3p

22.01.2022 We have become a culture that is obsessed with the notion that beauty is flawless and ageless perfection. We see this attitude proliferating in all avenues of our lives. We see this, most aptly; in the way in which we approach our built environment. In the most recent blog post, I discuss the importance of reshaping our attitude and the approach we take when it comes to the way we orchestrate materials for our buildings and cities. https://www.amalelachi.com//materiality-the-continuum-of-t

18.01.2022 The Master Australian Architect and Pritzker prize winner, Glenn Murcutt often cites this wonderful ancient Aboriginal proverb when describing his approach to his architecture. Its such a beautiful philosophy, in my view to touch the earth lightly. But what does this mean and how does it relate to us, as designers, architects, builders and the client/clients? In essence, to touch the earth lightly, as it pertains to this proverb, can also be interpreted as to be sustainabl...e. Since the industrial revolution, I believe we have somewhat missed the mark in the way we use our resources and the attitude in which we have approached our built environments. We have also missed the mark, in view, in our relationship, or lack there-of, with the natural environment at large. In the most recent blog post, I go through the philosophy of touching the earth lightly and try to instill in the minds of designers and architects, and perhaps the general public at large, on what role we can play in order to try and perhaps re-evaluate our attitude; and approach we take to develop more built environments that adhere to this wonderful philosophy. 06.01.2022 In a world ever more steeped in technology, of what use do we have for something that seems as primitive as drawing; or as Yuhani Pallasmaa would put it, the thinking hand? In my most recent blog post, I go through some of the reasons that I believe; as architects and designers, drawing is still relevant, and if not, more important than ever before. https://www.amalelachi.com/blog/2019/5/20/the-thinking-hand

02.01.2022 New Blog! That night my imagination was, in a certain sense, baptised These are the words chronicled by C.S Lewis in his Autobiography, Surprised by Joy: My imagination was baptised, he says. It's such an odd concept and upon reading, struck me profoundly.... How can something immaterial, such as an imagination become baptised? Perception and memory differ from imagination, as they rely upon what exists or has already existed, for their mental processes to take place. Imagination, however, is different; in that it is the thought process that, when takes place, becomes materialised. In the most recent blog post, I discuss the importance of this process that we call imagination and it's integrality, as designers and architects and artists alike, to enter into the initiation, or baptismal procedure, if you like of the imaginative process, in order to create good and holistic and humanistic built environments. 01.01.2022 "I still use paper and pencil for drawing... because I really believe that it's integral to a way of thinking... drawing is an integral part of discovery." - Glenn Murcutt

01.01.2022 Thankyou to the AIA for an inspiring and informative seminar today; on how to #buildbackbetter after the devestating bushfires that have ravaged our country over the past few months.
