23.01.2022 We’re excited to be able to offer our community a new way to engage with Council thanks to the addition of Livechat on our website. Livechat is where a human (one of our staff) is waiting to assist customers on our website in real time helping them to find what they are looking for more easily. It’s all part of our efforts to help customers online. The Livechat icon will only appear on the bottom right hand corner of our website when one of our staff is available to chat.... Remember that the person on the end of the Livechat is also a member of the community you live in, so please treat them with respect as they do their best to help you find answers to your questions. We hope this new service helps everyone to find what they need from Council.

22.01.2022 Congratulations to Aireys Inlet novelist, poet and musician Gregory Day on being awarded the prestigious Patrick White Award for literature as recognition for his body of work. Gregory is well known for work dramatising cultural and environmental change on Victoria’s southwest coast and explores the possibilities of finding the right balance between nature and culture through investigating the experience of the Australian character at home and abroad. He has written five ...novels, the most recent of which, A Sand Archive, was shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Award. His next novel is about a female poet in the surf coast region. The Patrick White Award is an annual literary prize established by White using the funds from his 1973 Nobel Prize in Literature award, which was used to establish a trust for this prize. He stipulated that the award be announced the Friday after the Melbourne Cup to turn attention from sport to literature. Well done, Gregory!

21.01.2022 Spring-like temperatures are coming a few days early this weekend and while we can all use some time out in our beautiful natural environment, please remember to stick to the Stage 3 Stay at Home restrictions to help keep everyone safe: wear a face covering unless you have a lawful exemption only exercise or undertake sporting activities with one other person or your household members (that includes children meeting a friend) keep a physical distance from others (1.5m)... wash hands frequently spend as short a time as possible where others are such as in carparks prior to going surfing (get ready at home first and head home in your wetsuit to change). The Australian Defence Force will be joining Victoria Police in community safety patrols across Surf Coast Shire locations this weekend, particularly coastal areas, but if you see anything that could endanger the health of others, please contact the Police Assistance Line on 131 444 or online at www.police.vic.gov.au/palolr. Be kind to others and please get tested if you have even the mildest symptoms. Testing is the best way to understand if the virus is spreading or slowing. The more tests that are done the more data is available to inform where and when restrictions can be lifted.

21.01.2022 Council is announcing reductions to the speed limit on a number of roads in the shire, in line with the Victorian Government and Transport Accident Commission (TAC)'s Towards Zero road safety campaign. From February 2021, the following speed limit changes will come into place: Gundrys Road, Bellbrae, a local primary collector road linking communities and properties between the Great Ocean Road and Bellbrae, will have a reduced speed limit on part of the road between Grea...t Ocean Road and Elkington Road from 100km/hr to 80km/hr. In addition to the change to the speed limit, an unsealed section of Gundrys Road, just west of Eagle Point Road, will be upgraded next year. Works will include sealing a short section of the road on the bend and some minor drainage improvements. Vickerys Road, (off Gundrys Road) will have a reduced limit from 80km/hr to 60km/hr between Gundrys Road and Portreath Road. The Lighthouse tourist precinct, Aireys Inlet, encompassing the area between the Great Ocean Road and the Split Point lighthouse, will reduce from 60km/hr to 40km/hr. South Beach Road, Torquay, a local collector road linking communities and properties between the Surf Coast Highway and Horseshoe Bend Road, is changing from 80km/hr to 60km/hr. The existing 40km/hr School Zone on a section of this road will also be retained. Blackgate Road, Torquay, a local road connecting the Bellarine Peninsula with the Surf Coast Highway and the Great Ocean Road is being reduced from 100km/hr to 80km/hr, on the road between Surf Coast Highway and Horseshoe Bend Road. These changes support improving the safety and access on these sections of roads for summer and aligns with the regional speed limit policy developed in consultation with Victoria Police and the Department of Transport. Changes will complement recent road safety works on these roads. #communitysafety #towardszero #surfcoastshire #pleaseslowdown

18.01.2022 This photo was taken by Fred Morley in 1940 the morning after a bombing raid on London. It became a symbol of Britain’s resilience. Most of us will never experience anything like the blitz but we publish this photo today to thank you all for your support this year in the fight against COVID19. We thank the front line medical staff and thank the people who worked in essential services including supermarket staff and warehouse workers and delivery drivers who made sure our wor...ld continued to function during the lockdown. The freedom we are enjoying this summer is thanks to your collective effort. 2020 has been incredibly challenging but it has also brought out the best in people. Whatever your plans for New Year’s Eve remember to be kind to yourself and others. Play it safe and be patient if you are at a local venue. Sadly there are new cases in Victoria so remember it’s as important as ever to maintain physical distancing, wash your hands and wear a mask where required. And if you have symptoms please get tested. Farewell 2020. Welcome 2021.

17.01.2022 Angleseas Loveridge Lookout was recently placed on the Victorian Heritage Register ahead of the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. Here are some lovely photographs we have found of the lookout, as well as how it looks today. Were so happy this lookout has had a comeback, after falling into disrepair and being restored by Council in 2010, with the help of a federal government grant and local fundraising organised by the Anglesea Historical Society, including signif...icant donations from Bendigo Bank, Alcoa and Seaside Seconds. The lookout was built in 1938 as a memorial to James Loveridge by his widow Bertha and located at his favourite viewing location of Bass Strait, which he walked to every day from his home Anglecrest. In its time, the lookout has been used as an observation post for the volunteer air observers corps and was continuously manned by a group of 56 local volunteers from 1942 until 1945, playing a critical role in the ground warning system of the Royal Australian Air Force. #surfcoastshire #community #anglesea #history

11.01.2022 Kate Toholka is one of our All Abilities Advisory Committee. She lost 80% of her hearing when she was 10 months old, after contracting meningitis. Before COVID-19, I could get away with changing my behavior to be able to lip read such as positioning myself so that I could see a person’s face. No one knew I had a disability, says Kate. But, with masks, I suddenly had to tell people about my disability and ask them to change their behavior so we could communicate. It w...as a real challenge and made me understand what it was like for people with a disability that was more visible. This year’s International Day of People with a Disability theme is: Not all disabilities are visible. For me, this just comes back to kindness. You will never know the full extent of someone's disability and how it affects them, so always assume you know nothing, says Kate. Ask them how you can help and never judge. There have been good side-effects to COVID-19 for Kate, such as people embracing video conferencing, which she is able to do where teleconferencing is not possible for her to hear participants. People didn’t want to video conference before, but now everyone’s forced to learn how to do it; it’s everywhere, says Kate. That’s the best thing ever for me. She says celebrating International Day of People with Disability is so important because it’s about representation. Growing up I only met one other young person with hearing loss I only saw older people, who I couldn’t relate to at all, says Kate. It was a great feeling when I saw people like me with the same challenges. Take some time to log into our Facebook on Wednesday, December 2nd from 10am - 11am to watch a special International Day of People with Disability Connections TV session, thanks to genU. #surfcoastshire #IDPwD International Day of People with Disability - Australia

08.01.2022 Mosquito numbers are on the rise following wet, mild winter and spring weather and Surf Coast Shire Council has started its proactive monitoring and treatment program. A mosquito larvae treatment will be undertaken in the Anglesea River today. This is not spraying, but the application of an approved larvicide, which is a pellet-type product spread by hand to the water in order to treat the mosquito larvae. The active ingredient is Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) ...and s-Methoprene to control mosquito larvae. These products are approved by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority for mosquito management. Both products are used widely to manage mosquito larvae because of their negligible impact on non-target species and they do not harm people, pets or the general environment. The treatment should reduce the number of mosquitoes, which are a natural part of the Anglesea environment, but will not remove mosquitoes altogether. It is still important to protect yourself and your family. To Beat the Bites: Wear long, loose fitting, light-coloured clothing. Limit outdoor activity at dusk and dawn which are popular times for mosquitoes to be out. Make sure there’s no stagnant water where mozzies can breed around your home. Use mosquito netting or screens on doors and windows. Use an effective repellent on exposed skin. Find out more at www.surfcoast.vic.gov.au/mosquitoes

07.01.2022 Spring into action: help look after the Surf Coast The poisonous introduced weed Cape Tulip (one-leaf) is a serious problem and well known to many Surf Coast farmers and residents. Early spring, when the weed (pictured) is in flower, is the easiest time to identify and control Cape Tulip infestations.... All parts of the weed are toxic to humans as well as animals including cattle, sheep and goats. It spreads easily from one area to the other by the movement of seed or its underground stems which can get caught up in hay or silage. Applying a suitable herbicide or manually digging and/or hand-pulling out the plant are the best methods in helping reduce the spread. Cape Tulip weed is present in the Winchelsea, Buckley, Wurdale, Modewarre, Moriac, Barrabool Hills and Paraparap areas with small outbreaks occurring in Aireys Inlet and Bellbrae. Surf Coast residents can assist the control and eradication program by looking out for Cape Tulip on roadsides and Council-managed land, and alerting Council about those locations via the lodge a request page at www.surfcoast.vic.gov.au/request or phoning Council on 5261 0600.

05.01.2022 Thank you to everyone wearing a mask to help keep us all safe As part of the Kindness Pandemic #MaskKindness, members from the Surf Coast shared with us why theyre wearing a mask. From protecting their loved ones, keeping people around them safe and wanting to see their families who live interstate again, theres many reasons why everyone is doing their bit to keep our community safe.... While we can all use some time out in our beautiful natural environment, please remember to stick to the Stage 3 Stay at Home restrictions to help keep everyone safe: wear a face covering unless you have a lawful exemption only exercise or undertake sporting activities with one other person or your household members (that includes children meeting a friend) keep a physical distance from others (1.5m) wash hands frequently spend as short a time as possible where others are such as in carparks prior to going surfing (get ready at home first and head home in your wetsuit to change). If you see anything that could endanger the health of others, please contact the Police Assistance Line on 131 444 or online at www.police.vic.gov.au/palolr. Be kind to others and please get tested if you have even the mildest symptoms. Testing is the best way to understand if the virus is spreading or slowing. The more tests that are done the more data is available to inform where and when restrictions can be lifted.

Our Ranger Services team members will be out and about ensuring people are familiar with the arrangements, having fun and staying safe. 03.01.2022 What do all these lids have in common? Well, nothing, really. You see, some can go in the recycling bin, and some can't. ... To go in the recycling bin: PLASTIC LIDS need to have the recycling symbol with the numbers 1-5 AND be bigger than a credit card. METAL LIDS need to be ferrous (which means they can be picked up by the sorting magnets), OR they need to be bigger than a credit card. ------------------------------ Let's take a closer look at these: ------------------------------ Hot chocolate canister lid (bigger than a credit card and has the number 4 in a triangle). Wine bottle top (Smaller than a credit card, and since it's aluminium it isn't magnetic and the machines won't pick it up) Jam jar lid (big enough AND magnetic) Orange juice jug lid (has the number 4 on it, BUT it's too small) Laundry detergent lid (big enough, but I can't see a number in a triangle. When in doubt, leave it out.) Beer bottle cap (it may be tiny, but it's ferrous so will be snatched up by the magnet on the sorting line) ------------------------------ For more on what goes in to each of the kerbside bins, visit www.surfcoast.vic.gov.au/wasteandrecycling
