23.01.2022 Obviously we would t take our animals to Bungendore, but the warning definitely applies to us as well!

23.01.2022 I just finished attending another amazing webinar by Dr. Susan Friedman on reducing unwanted behavior using reinforcement strategies. Dr. Friedman is so inspir...ing and thoughtful that I always take away something from one of her lectures. Todays topic was using reinforcement to decrease problem behaviors. When you want your dog to stop doing something, as yourself what you want him/her to do instead. Then ask yourself, "What does that look like?" Now, start reinforcing that behavior. Heres one example: One of the dogs in this image had a tendency to use me as a brake when retrieving the ball. Not only is that sometimes painful, but this time of year its also really muddy. So, I began marking with "YES" as she returned with the ball, but before she jumped. This caused her to spit out the ball, which I then threw again as the reward. The jumping doesnt even have a chance to occur before she gets rewarded for a nice approach. Therefore, the gentler (and cleaner) approach became much more rewarding, and the jumping decreased. Actually, the jumping stopped altogether. Reward-based training isnt about treats, its about smart application of reinforcers to improve behavior. 21.01.2022 COVID-19 question Should I get a puppy for company or for the kids while we are in isolation ? There is no doubt that having a new puppy will bring lots of sm...iles, joy and companionship during this unsettling time. I am extremely grateful for the company of my pets right now, so I do understand why getting a puppy is appealing BUT please give some thought to the following points I have jotted below. - I am very concerned that many of the puppies currently being sourced are being bred on puppy farms. I always encourage potential puppy owners to visit the home of where a puppy has been bred and to be comfortable with the environment that the puppy is being raised in. As this is no longer possible, you have no way of seeing the condition of where your puppy was bred. People are paying huge amounts of money to have a puppy dropped off to them in a park with absolutely no background on the puppy or its health. - Puppies are a huge amount of work yes, we all have a lot more time at home and for some people this is a great time to settle a puppy in. Please remember, puppies are also very busy and messy and for those who are already finding it difficult working from home with kids constantly in the house, adding a puppy will add a new level of chaos with another mouth to feed, toilet training, activity etc Trust me on this one! - A puppy may live for 18 years, so please ask yourself if you really want a dog and not just something for the kids to play with during isolation. In this uncertain time, do you have the capability to care for and pay for the ongoing expenses? What about ongoing exercise requirements if we have our outdoor exercise time restricted? - Puppies need to be socialised to as many sights, sounds and smells as possible. With puppy classes and training schools closed, it is still important to socialise your puppy as much as possible. You must practice safe distancing but you can use your outdoor exercise time to expose your puppy to things like buses going by, construction noise, different surfaces (e.g. grass, gravel, concrete). Do not let people stop to pat your puppy at this time. - Puppies need to be taught to be comfortable on their own if a puppy has company for 24 hours a day for the next few months, it may develop separation issues when things return to normal. I am worried that many of these puppies will be surrendered in a few months due to anxious behaviour. You must teach your puppy to have daily quiet time- ideally using a playpen or crate, do not allow them to follow you everywhere and dont constantly carry them around. If you will be expecting your puppy to spend time outside when you go back to work then you must spend time now training them to be comfortable outside. - It is not all negative though this extra home time means you do have plenty of time to train a puppy, bond with them and set up great habits from the start - provided you commit to training and everyone in your house works to the same training rules. - If you are specifically after a pet for kids, have you thought about different pets - perhaps mice, rats, fish or guinea pigs? They all require care and commitment but not as much as dogs. Cats are generally require less time than dogs and adopting an older cat can still provide your family with great company. Or perhaps consider adopting an older dog that needs a home. - Fostering a pet through a rescue group may be a good option to consider as this means you are providing a temporary home for an animal in need, without the responsibility of long term commitment. The RSPCA Australia was looking for foster carers in various locations but please go through their website to see if they are looking for foster carers in your area. Safe Pets Safe Families - Keeping people & pets together in South Australia are currently looking for foster carers please visit their website for more info. I believe Animal Welfare League NSW is also looking for foster carers - please check their website. Sorry for lthe ong post but these are very important messages! Remember, a pet is for life, not just isolation.

21.01.2022 Always good to be reminded ... My post from 2 years ago: Where is your pet now? As animal lovers whose dogs are part of the family or valued employees, we need to make sure our k9 mates are safely and securely confined to our properties.... Whether you live in town, on a rural block or a property- not only is it illegal but its just not safe for our dogs to be wandering off by themselves.Make sure your fencing is adequate; hasnt been damaged or blown over; gates can be and are latched securely and that your dogs are securely contained when youre not home. The very least worst thing that can happen if Fido escapes/wanders/takes himself for a walk, is that s/he may get caught by a ranger, impounded and you will be fined As several families have sadly learned recently, there are much worse fates that could befall them: you never get to see them again, never know what happened to them. Or they could get hit by a car, severely injured or killed. They could eat a bait and die or a landowner could shoot them So please, keep them safe by keeping them in. See more

05.01.2022 Food for thought ...

03.01.2022 DOGS ON LEADS PLEASE UNLESS YOURE IN A GREEN SIGN AREA Our dogs have certainly been the winners during the past weeks of isolation and physical distancing. T...aking pooch for a walk means ticking the permissible exercise box and getting out of the house, for sure! But it seems, with all of this increased activity, theres also been a noticeable shift towards a more relaxed attitude to dog control. Our rangers are seeing a greater number of dog owners who seem unaware of the rules about keeping dogs on a leash at all times, unless the area is designated a leash free zone (theyre the areas with the green signs). For the safety and enjoyment of everyone, please remember to keep your dog on a leash unless youre in a Green Sign area. Enjoy those puppy walks!
