25.01.2022 The COVID-19 pandemic has placed us all in a situation of unprecedented difficulty, calling into question aspects of our way of life that we have been taking for granted. In this week’s episode of This Catholic Life, which airs tomorrow, Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP will address some of the key ethical challenges from vaccines to support for the unemployed and restrictions on churches. The episode will be available here: https://bit.ly/2HUqXVp

25.01.2022 Today is Remembrance Day, an opportune time to reflect on some remarkable holy men and women who not only picked up their sword to serve their country, but who often did so for a higher purpose: their faith. Some of these saints felt impelled to sign up to military service after receiving spiritual visions, while others joined the forces to help spread the Word of God. Most, however, found their spiritual calling during, or after, their years as a soldier. Nonetheless, the lives of these eight saints reveal that the courage they displayed as soldiers would prepare them for the persecution and various challenges they would later face as Christians. See them below

25.01.2022 In this episode of The Episcopal Podcast, Bishop Richard Umbers, Silvana Scarfe and Matt Tan talk about doing Church online, following the publication of essays on The Distanced Church.

23.01.2022 On Australia Day this Tuesday, a special Mass will be held at St Mary's Cathedral at 9am, celebrated by Cathedral Dean, Fr Don Richardson. Attendance will be limited due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Mass will also be livestreamed here: https://bit.ly/3iAD2NW For Sydneysiders visiting the city on Australia Day, St Mary's Cathedral will be open for private prayer throughout the day. May we unite in a prayer through the intercession of our nation's patron, Our Lady Help of Christians to guide and protect Australia in the year ahead.

23.01.2022 Today is the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows which commemorates the seven great sorrows which Mary lived in relation to Her Son, as they are recorded in the Gospels or through tradition. Today we are invited to reflect on Mary's deep suffering: 1. At the prophecy of Simeon: "You yourself shall be pierced with a sword - so that the thoughts of many hearts may be laid bare." (Luke 2:35). 2. At the flight into Egypt; "Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt." (Mt 2...:13). 3. Having lost the Holy Child at Jerusalem; "You see that your father and I have been searching for you in sorrow." (Luke 2:48). 4. Meeting Jesus on his way to Calvary; 5. Standing at the foot of the Cross; "Near the cross of Jesus there stood His mother." (John 19:25). 6. Jesus being taken from the Cross; 7. At the burial of Christ. Our Lady of Sorrows pray for us See more

22.01.2022 In this episode of The Episcopal Podcast, Bishop Richard Umbers and Daniell Hill speak to their first international guest, Jill Alexy, founder of Martyrian Journeys, on the Transcendental of Beauty. What is it? Where is it? And why is it important for the Catholic?

22.01.2022 For some last minute inspiration ... instead of dressing up as ghouls, goblins or gory monsters, why not encourage your kids to dress as SAINTS or HOLY PEOPLE for #Halloween! Also known as All Hallow’s Eve, it is the night before All Saints Day and is a time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead including saints, martyrs and all the faithful departed as well as for the souls in purgatory. By dressing up as saints it is a great way to imagine ourselves following their example of Christian discipleship. P.S. If you want to show us your saint costumes, email them to [email protected]

21.01.2022 On the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe - December 12 - all expectant mothers from around Sydney are invited to join Bishop Richard Umbers for Mass and a blessing for you and your preborn children. 20.01.2022 Today is the feast day of St Catherine Laboure, believed to have relayed the request from the Blessed Virgin Mary to create the famous Miraculous Medal worn by millions of people around the world. Entering the Daughters of Charity in France at a very young age, the Virgin Mary appeared three times to St Catherine, who put her hands on the Virgin Mary's lap as Our Lady spoke to her in an empty chapel. St Catherine's stories spread throughout France and people began wearing a medal commemorating her visions. In 1933, her body was exhumed for beatification and 57 years after her death was found as fresh as the day it was buried. Her incorrupt body can still be seen today at the Mother House of the Daughters of Charity in The Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Paris. St Catherine Laboure pray for us.

20.01.2022 Congratulations Fr Michael de Stoop who has been named the new Rector of the Good Shepherd Seminary Homebush taking over from Fr Danny Meagher who has completed his six year term at the helm. Our thoughts and prayers go with you both

19.01.2022 Today is the feast day of St. John Leonardi, the patron saint of pharmacists. Born at Diecimo, Italy, he became a pharmacist's assistant, before studying for the priesthood and ordained. He gathered a group of laymen to work in hospitals and prisons and proposed a new congregation of secular priests. Great opposition to his proposal developed, but in 1583, his association was recognized by the bishop of Lucca with the approval of Pope Gregory XIII. He died in Rome after contracting the plague while ministering to the stricken. He was venerated for his miracles and is considered one of the founders of the College for the Propagation of the Faith. St. John Leonardi, pray for us

18.01.2022 Congratulations to Frs John Pham, Noel Custodio, Roberto Keryakos and Jonathan Vala who were today ordained to the holy priesthood at a Mass at St Mary's Cathedral. God bless you today and always

18.01.2022 The Good Morning God Prayer Good Morning God! You are ushering in another day, untouched and freshly new. So here I am to ask you, God,... if You'll renew me too. Forgive the many errors that I made yesterday and let me try again dear God to walk closer in Your way. But Lord, I am well aware, I can't make it on my own. So take my hand and hold it tight, for I cannot walk alone. Amen See more

18.01.2022 Today is the 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time

18.01.2022 Today is the feast day of Saint Joseph of Cupertino who is famous for levitating and the patron saint of pilots, astronauts and air travellers. Born in Naples, he joined the Franciscan Friars Minor Conventual and after his ordination gave himself up entirely to a life of devotion to the Lord. The Holy Spirit began to work many amazing miracles through Saint Joseph and on more than seventy occasions people say they saw him rise from the ground while offering mass or praying. We pray for everyone in the aviation industry who have lost their jobs due to COVID-19. He is also the patron of exam takers. Saint Joseph Cupertino pray for us

17.01.2022 The Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney has launched a new website, Facebook and Instagram pages today, aimed at promoting the pathway to sainthood for the Co-Founder of Our Lady's Nurses for the Poor, Servant of God, Eileen O'Connor. We pray that not only the Catholics of Sydney but indeed all Australians can draw much inspiration from Eileen's remarkable life and legacy. Her great courage in serving the sick poor, despite enduring great personal illness herself is a truly remark...able example to us all. Watch a short video paying tribute to Eileen and her legacy. Visit the new website at this address: www.eileenoconnor.com.au and follow the new Facebook page Eileen O'Connor and Instagram page at this address: www.instagram.com/theeileenoconnor/ As we approach the centenary of Eileen's death in January, let us unite in a prayer that the Little Mother, as she was affectionately known, may soon be counted amongst the saints in heaven See more

The 5:30pm Mass this evening to commemorate Red Wednesday will be livestreamed on our website and YouTube Channel: https://youtu.be/KlTK0CYAlYo For more information visit redwednesday.org or contact ACN - Aid to the Church in Need

17.01.2022 Today is the feast day of St Jude, an apostle and the patron saint of desperate cases and lost causes. He was the brother of James the Less and a close relative of Jesus. He was martyred with Simon the Zealot in Beirut, Lebanon and his body was brought back to Rome and buried under St. Peter’s Basilica. His patronage of lost causes stems from the belief that few Christians invoked him for misplaced fear of praying to Christ's betrayer, Judas Iscariot, because of their similar names. St Jude, pray for us

17.01.2022 The Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney will welcome four new priests when they are ordained at St Mary's Cathedral on September 19 by Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP. Aged in their 20s and 30s, the four men come from a range of professional and personal backgrounds. 14.01.2022 Today is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, which recalls three historical events: the finding of the True Cross by Saint Helena, the mother of the emperor Constantine; the dedication of churches built by Constantine on the site of the Holy Sepulchre and Mount Calvary; and the restoration of the True Cross to Jerusalem by the emperor Heraclius II. However the feast, more than anything else, is a celebration and commemoration of God's greatest work: his salvific death on the Cross and His Resurrection, through which death was defeated and the doors to Heaven opened

14.01.2022 Today is the feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle. Famously converted on the road to Damascus, he travelled tens of thousands of miles around the Mediterranean spreading the word of Jesus and it was Paul who came up with the doctrine that would turn Christianity from a small sect of Judaism into a worldwide faith that was open to all. His radical transformation is demonstrative of the extraordinary redemptive power of the Gospel. As a zealous Jewish scholar, he had persecuted countless Christians including the first martyr for Christ, Stephen. After his encounter with Christ, however, he became an unstoppable force for the kingdom of God. St Paul the Apostle pray for us.

13.01.2022 Today is the feast day of Saint Teresa of Avila, the patron saint of headache sufferers as she often wrote about the devastating migraines she experienced. From her earliest years she was religiously inclined. Her mother died when she was just 12, and she entrusted herself to the Blessed Virgin Mary for maternal care. At the age of 19 she left home to join the Carmelite order in her home town. However, she found that this order had greatly relaxed its rules and lived more li...ke those in the outside world. After reading St. Augustine’s Confessions she travelled throughout Spain reforming old convents and forming new ones. On one of her journeys she met St. John of the Cross, who became her spiritual adviser. They both worked together to establish the Discalced Carmelites. St Teresa died in 1582 on her way to her convent at Alba de Tormes. When her body was exhumed more than 330 years later, the coffin emitted a sweet-smelling heavenly fragrance known as the odour of sanctity. St Teresa of Avila pray for us See more

12.01.2022 Today is All Souls' Day, an opportunity to commemorate the faithful departed. We pray for the souls of people who are in Purgatory - the place in which those who have died atone for their less grave sins - before being granted the vision of God in heaven. Pray for us Prayer for the Dead God our Father,... Your power brings us to birth, Your providence guides our lives, and by Your command we return to dust. Lord, those who die still live in Your presence, Their lives change but do not end. I pray in hope for my family, relatives and friends and for all the dead known to You alone. In company with Christ, Who died and now lives, may they rejoice in Your kingdom, where all our tears are wiped away. Unite us together again in one family, to sing Your praise forever and ever. Amen.

12.01.2022 Today is Remembrance Day and the feast day of Saint Martin of Tours, the patron saint of soldiers. Born of pagan parents and raised in Italy, he was the son of a veteran and forced to serve in the army from age 15. He became a Christian catechumen and was baptised at age 18. At 23, he refused a war bonus and told his commander: I have served you as a soldier; now let me serve Christ. Give the bounty to those who are going to fight but I am a soldier of Christ and it is not l...awful for me to fight. After great difficulties, he was discharged and became a monk, living first in Milan and later on a small island before returning to France and establishing what may have been the first French monastery near Poitiers. He lived there for 10 years, forming his disciples and preaching throughout the countryside. The people of Tours demanded that he become their bishop which he reluctantly allowed. One of the most famous stories about Martin of Tours occurred when he was still a soldier. It is said he met a beggar wearing rags and took his sword and cut his military cloak in half and gave half to the poor man for warmth. That night, Martin dreamed that Jesus was wearing the half of a cloak he had given away. During the Middle Ages, Martin’s cloak (cappa) became a relic that French kings would take into battle. The person whose job it was to care for the cloak was often a priest, and he was called a cappellani. It is from this that the word chaplain evolved. St Martin of Tours, pray for us See more

08.01.2022 Please consider signing this very important petition concerning a potential COVID-19 vaccine! Family Life International has been working on a campaign to provide an ethically developed vaccine for the corona virus and making that vaccine optional; that is, not mandatory, as well as providing information on the safety procedures followed or not followed in its development. To that end, we have spent some time in drafting and sending a letter to the Australian Catholic Bishops... asking them to support our campaign and then drafting and sending a letter to the Prime Minister, Health Minister, and Chief Medical Officer asking the aforementioned. This correspondence was signed by the National President of the Australian Catholic Medical Association and endorsed by the Patron of Solidarity for Healthcare, Family Life International, and the Catholic Women's League President. The petition supporting that letter is now on the Federal Parliamentary website. The letter to the Prime Minister and others, along with the link to the petition, can be accessed on the Family Life International website as provided below. https://www.fli.org.au/e-petition-regarding-corona-virus-v/ See more

08.01.2022 Today is the feast day of Saint Padre Pio, the patron saint of adolescents. Born Francesco Forgione to a poor farming family in Pietrelcina, Italy, he expressed a desire to be a priest very early. At the age of fifteen, he entered the novitiate for the Capuchin Franciscan Friars, taking the name Pio. He was ordained Padre (Father) Pio seven years later. One day, while praying, he experienced a vision of the wounded Christ and received the Stigmata. Before long, the news spre...ad and Padre Pio became well-known and a great spiritual influence, not only in Italy, but around the world. 07.01.2022 Today is this feast day of Edwin of Northumbria, the patron saint of large families. Having married the Christian princess (Saint) Ethelburga, Edwin the pagan king of the English kingdom of Northumbria, began to consider becoming a Christian himself. As the king delayed a final decision about his religion, Pope Boniface V wrote to him, inviting him to accept "the medicine of salvation. To encourage Queen Ethelburga in her efforts to convert her husband, the pope sent her many gifts. At length, Edwin was won over through the efforts of Ethelburga's chaplain, (Saint) Paulinus of York. Edwin spent the six remaining years of his reign as a devout Catholic monarch who brought peace to his kingdom. Saint Edwin of Northumbria pray for us.

01.01.2022 Today is the feast day of Saint Andrew, the patron saint of fishermen. During his lifetime, he became a disciple of John the Baptist, one of the Twelve Apostles and the first of Christ’s disciples. Saint Andrew and his brother Saint Peter are recorded as having been declared fishers of men by Jesus after he asked them to cast their nets and follow him. It was Saint Andrew who brought the boy with the loaves and fishes to Jesus before the feeding of the five thousand. He was... sentenced to death by crucifixion but asked to be crucified on a diagonal cross known as a saltire as he felt he wasn't worthy to die on the same shape cross as Jesus. This diagonal cross is now used on the Scottish flag. St Andrew is not just the patron saint of Scotland. He is the patron saint of Greece, Russia, singers, spinsters, maidens, women wanting to be mothers, gout and sore throats. Saint Andrew pray for us. #andrew #feastday #catholiclife See more
