03.01.2022 To acknowledge NAIDOC Week and the theme of Always Was, Always Will Be, the Early Childhood and Education students learnt about the traditional uses of the Bangalow Palm traditionally known as Pijjibun, Pikkibeen or Piccabeen Palm. The Pijjibun (Bangalow Palm) is indigenous to the Fingal Peninsula. The leaf bases (sheaths) were made into Coolamons. A Coolamon was a multi-purpose shallow vessel, or dish with curved sides, ranging in length and similar in shape to a canoe. The...y were used as water carriers by the Saltwater people of the Bundjalung Nation and to collect and carry fruit, berries, nuts and other native flora. Coolamons could hold water for up to one week. The students had the opportunity to work with this natural fibre to create baskets, bags and plant holders that can be used in an early childhood service with children. The students will be able to use these creations in early childhood services to educate children around the traditional uses of this common local flora. Their creations were made from the palm sheath and sewn using cotton, all sustainable natural products that can be placed on the compost for recycling once no longer needed. RTO 90003
