07.01.2022 Anatomy Corner The knee The knee is a large and complex joint. It is classified as a hinge joint as it largely moves in one plane... The knee joint has two articulations: tibiofemoral - the thigh bone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia). patellofemoral - femur connects with the patella (kneecap) The fibula is the thinner bone that runs alongside the outside of the tibia, it isn't directly involved in the knee joint, however it provides a surface for important muscles and ligaments to connect to Ligaments join the bones and provide stability to the knee: The anterior cruciate ligament prevents the femur from sliding backward on the tibia (or the tibia sliding forward on the femur). The posterior cruciate ligament prevents the femur from sliding forward on the tibia (or the tibia from sliding backward on the femur). The medial and lateral collateral ligaments prevent the femur from sliding side to side. Meniscus Two C-shaped pieces of cartilage known as the medial and lateral menisci act as shock absorbers between the femur and tibia. Bursae Numerous bursae, or fluid-filled sacs, help the knee move smoothly by reducing friction where tendons slide over bony areas Main muscles acting on the knee The quadriceps - the group of four muscle on the front of the thigh, act to extend (straighten) the knee The hamstrings - the group of muscles on the back of the thigh, act to flex (bend) the knee #knee #joint #anatomy #fitness #mobility #kneepain #osteo #massage Image Courtesy of: https://www.injurymap.com/free-human-anatomy-illustrations See more
