25.01.2022 So good to be back down at the Tamar Yacht Club in Beauty Point after so many years. The amount of development that has happened here since my last visit is won...derful. Thank you for showing me around the new boat ramp, the new boats, the new shed with the slab about to be poured and catch me up on everything that has been happening; including the chance to meet your delightful unexpected guests who have made our Tamar Valley home throughout covid. And thanks for the hot cuppa & the scones!!

25.01.2022 For all of our Windsurfing members, the 2020 State Championships are on in a few weekend’s time at the Sandy Bay Sailing Club PJ’s Super Series. After the strong numbers shown at the TYC Spring Regatta not long ago, it would be great to have a strong Northern representation at these championships

23.01.2022 Does anyone have any idea as to who owns this vessel? It was found this morning floating around North West Bay and was towed to the Huon Aquaculture mooring at... Howden. No registration or markings! Thanks to HAC for helping the owner out.

22.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE - A ROUGH NIGHT FOR THE L2H FLEET BUT JAZZ PLAYER IN TUNE The TasPorts Launceston to Hobart fleet took a battering overnight with four boats now r...etired from the race. After a slow start, the fleet encountered the forecast west to south westerly winds averaging 25 to 35 knots for Banks Strait and adjacent areas. At 20:24, Jeff Cordell, skipper of B&G Advantage and a stalwart of the race, retired after his Mumm 36 was dismasted. Sailing underpowered, with a storm jib and a reef in the main, Cordell said the mast broke in two stages and they lost the lot. There was no incident, we had done our rig checks and were underpowered, running dead flat at the time, but something just gave way, with the mast shearing off at the deck. It took us 20 minutes to cut the rig away and unfortunately we weren’t able to salvage anything, said Cordell. The experienced crew responded quickly but were hit with more hard luck when the fuel line burst on the way back to Beauty Point. We had enough fuel to get home but when the fuel line burst, we needed to shut it down, and were towed the last ten miles, said Cordell. It was a long and frustrating night for the crew of B&G Advantage as they were battered by steep waves in freezing cold conditions on the return to port, but Cordell reported that all onboard were safe. Prima Donna skippered by Royce Salter and fresh from a total makeover, followed suit soon after, retiring from the race at 21:00 after experiencing mast damage. We were having a great sail with a heavy weather kite and jib up until we pushed into the back of a wave and the top of the mast just folded, said Heather McCallum, co-owner of the boat. We were lucky that it happened just before dark and off Waterhouse Island. We got out the bolt cutters, cut halyards and strapped the main onto the boom, before heading to Binalong Bay. We tried to rig up a storm jib to sail but the angle just wasn’t right. We are currently waiting on St Helens Coastguard to bring us some more fuel for our trip back to Hobart, said McCallum. McCallum was full of praise for the support of the St Helens Coastguard, the Race Committee and other competitors during what was a very tough night. And just before midnight, Zephyr Insurance Masters retired from the race after experiencing rudder damage. The clamp that holds the rudder in place slipped about 30mm which meant that we were slowly taking on water through the gap while we were sailing. We are on a MAST mooring alongside Prima Donna in Binalong Bay working out a plan to repair the rudder so we can make our way back to Hobart. We saw over 40 knots last night and had to tackle the opposing wind and currents that the area is renowned for, said skipper, Ian Johnston. As at 11:30 AEDT, John Dryden’s Jazz Player from the Kettering Yacht Club/Derwent Sailing Squadron, is sailing the race of a lifetime, leading on IRC, AMS and PHS handicaps and second on line honours to Alive, skippered by Duncan Hine. AdvantEDGE, skippered by Andrew Jones and sailing from the Port Dalrymple Yacht Club, is in third place on line honours, while Black Magic, skippered by Graham Mansfield, has just retired citing crew seasickness. Alive is scheduled to finish the race in the early evening, but much will depend on whether a sea breeze builds to bring them up the River Derwent in style, or whether the River shuts down in the late afternoon. Alive will be focused on taking the race record which was set in 2009. 20.01.2022 Heres a wrap up of the Laser World Radials held in Melbourne last week from Gail... "Simone and Ryan were pleased to see the last day of the regatta of weird winds. Only 1 race each on days 1,2,3 &6 showed how difficult it was for sailors and race committee. Yesterday (day 6) had 8 start sequences before the fleets were all away - a long and frustrating wait for the men who were last start in the dying breeze."

20.01.2022 Oskana crew eying Launceston to Hobart Crack harbour and ocean racing yacht Oskana may contest this years Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race if the young family... of owner/skipper Mike Pritchards can convince him to enter the 280 nautical mile coastal offshore race. Oskana, a powerful Cookson 50 and arguably Tasmanias fastest locally-based racing yacht, has been contesting the Combined Clubs Winter Series on the Derwent with Pritchards wife Bianca and their children, Oliver, Oscar, Stella and Sebastien in the crew. We understand that his family are pressuring Mike to do the L2H race so that they can race as a family in a long offshore race, Derwent Sailing Squadron Vice Commodore Nick Connor said yesterday. If Oskana does compete then the race record will definitely be under threat, Vice Commodore Connor said, adding that the race provided opportunity for crew under the age of 18 to participate subject to certain criteria. Pritchard, noted as a prominent Targa driver and a successful ocean racing yachtsman, has told the DSS he is considering entering the L2H. The Launie is also very well suited to family crews. last year we had six or seven boats raced by families, including the winning yacht from Victoria, Vertigo. The Notice of Race for the Launceston to Hobart, which starts from Beauty Point on the Tamar River on 27 December, will be issued within a few weeks. Vice Commodore Connor emphasised that this years race would be conducted subject to any required restrictions by Tasmanian Health Authorities, adding that as things stand he could see no reason why it would not go ahead. We expect a bumper fleet with Tasmanian yachts that may normally contest the Sydney Hobart potentially seeing the Launceston to Hobart as a challenging alternative should that races not proceed. we already have a lot of interest. Vice Commodore Connor added. Unfortunately, we doubt there will be any Victorian entries this year. The Ocean Racing Club of Victoria have not made a decision on whether the Melbourne to Hobart race will go ahead and the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia will make an announcement on the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in mid-October. The Sydney to Gold Coast Race start has been rescheduled for 3 October but the COVID-19 cloud may further impact on this event. In Queensland, Hamilton Island and Magnetic Island Race Week regatta have been cancelled for this year, but Airlie Week Race Week got under way yesterday (Friday). 19.01.2022 Two of our up-and-coming optimist sailors Anna Herd and Lachie Hyde have headed south to compete in the Tasmanian Optimist State Championships held at the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania. After a big first day with four races in blustery conditions, both Anna and Lachie have a few more races to test themselves against some of the best young sailors in the state. 18.01.2022 The General Committee held its monthly meeting last night at Beauty Point. Three of the committee live in the area and it shares the driving for them. It was a stunning evening and the view out over the water was magnificent. Work has started on the all tide boat ramp so the committee also had a chance to see the progress made there. Thanks to Di who ensured that we didnt go hungry.

17.01.2022 A few photos of the work that has been continuing at Beauty Point. The shed is almost complete. New railing to protect the members from the edge of the new boat ramp, and the new ramp with the next layer of gravel. The settling is going well. Wont be long before we can finish the surface and have it ready for launching! Thanks to our hardworking Commodore Greg and all his helpers that have been instrumental in getting this work done.

17.01.2022 WELCOME 2020 L2H ENTRANT - TWITCH The syndicate owned Eureka 31 designed boat Twitch will be coming to this years L2H with a lot of crew street cred! Between th...e crew they have a combined 36 L2H races, 10 S2H races, several M2H and a sneaky Darwin to Arbonne race to round off a very experienced crew declaration. Owners David Rust, Ritchie Upton and Jim Bedford have been campaigning Twitch for several years in the Combined Clubs Series and many other club-based races, particularly at their home club of Bellerive Yacht Club. Regulars in the BYC twilight series, Twitch always brings a strong competitive streak to the fleet, while enjoying the mateship of sailing and having some fun along the way. This will be Twitch’s 5th year racing in the L2H and its great to have them back supporting the race. 17.01.2022 Zen Racing CROWNED KING OF THE DERWENT The NSW yacht Zen has been crowned overall winner of this years Harcourts Hobart King of the Derwent. The TP52 owned and ...skippered by Gordon Ketelbey sailed a perfect tactical race to finish 3rd over the line and win IRC on handicap. Zen has recently been acquired by Ketelbey after racing on the TP52 Super Series for many years and has undergone many modifications to make sure it is up to the challenge of offshore racing. Todays conditions, of a 15-20 knot sea breeze on the River Derwent, saw Phillip Turners yacht Alive Yachting take line honours to claim the Derwent Sailing Squadron Inc, City of Hobart Trophy. Purchased at the start of 2014 by Phillip Turner, a Tasmanian businessman, Alive has broken several long-standing race records and filled the trophy cabinet with east coast Australia races before heading to Southeast Asia mid 2016 for the Asian Series. She has now returned and looking forward to east coast Australia racing, after competing in this years Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Alive finished 2nd on IRC and the TP52 Quest owned by Bob Steel and Craig Neil were 3rd in the results. Greg Prescotts, modified Farr 40, 2Unlimited won AMS division and was 4th in IRC. Prescott will now be concentrating on tomorrows Australian Yachting Championships commencing in Hobart. This years PHS was won by NSW yacht Veteran yacht Katwinchar. Bill Barry-Cotters Katwinchar was the oldest boat in 75th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race fleet at 114 years of age, but also the oldest to have ever competed in the race. Built in 1904 by coopers at the Watney Brewery in London, Katwinchar won the Grand Veterans class. Katwinchar will also be competing in the Australian Yachting Championships. Finally, the results for the Launceston to Hobart, Beauty Point to Low Head and King of the Derwent Series has been taken out by Tim Oldingg and his crew from the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria boat Vertigo. 12.01.2022 WELCOME 2020 L2H ENTRANT PRIMA DONNA It’s a race against time for Royce Salter and his team at Salter Marine to get Prima Donna back in the water and tuned up... to race in this year’s L2H. The glass cedar hull of the Hick 35 has had a complete make over from the dark blue hull to Royce Salter signature boat colours and she is looking very slick. Salter will be joined by his partner Heather McCallum, son Julian and a few other well-known locals, David Calvert, David Short and Tom Stearnes, along with Darren Williams from NSW. Prima Donna last raced in the L2H in 2010, but this year Salter and his crew are expected to be very tactical as they take on the competitive fleet. When a sailor in any competition in Australia takes themselves too seriously, they are politely told Come on mate we’re not racing for sheep stations. Salter will certainly be taking this year’s race seriously, but not without a good sense of humour and some friendly banter between the competition. 08.01.2022 THE RACE IS ON TO HOBART Alive, skippered by Duncan Hine, is leading the TasPorts Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race (L2H) on line honours. A late entry in the rac...e, Alive, a Reichel-Pugh 66, sailed by a Tasmanian crew pulled together from some of the boat’s regulars when in Hobart, was the first boat to Low Head, and is expected to break the race record of 1 day 09 hours 33 minutes and 58 seconds, which was set in 2009. It was a tough start for the 31-boat fleet which started the race in very light conditions at Inspection Head, Beauty Point, on the Tamar River, at 1130 today. Talofa, a Northshore 38 owned by Rob and Judi Cawthorn and a regular in the L2H race, was squeezed out on the start line and had to restart the race, while Black Magic, skippered by Bellerive Yacht Club Commodore, Graham Mansfield, was becalmed before the race, giving the fleet a 10-minute advantage. The L2H is one race of a three-race series sailed over the Christmas / New Year period. Race One is from the start of the L2H to Low Head, the second race in the series is the race to Hobart, while Race Three is the King of the Derwent, sailed in Hobart on 2 January 2021. Victorian entry, Dream, skippered by Robert Green, had a solid start to the race after a long absence from racing due to the COVID-19 lockdown in Melbourne, winning the race to Low Head on PHS and ORCi overall. The Quest Syndicate, sailing from the Lindisfarne Sailing Club and skippering Quest in her first L2H race, was the first to Low Head on AMS, while The Dog House, skippered by Ambrose Coad and with Benjamin Coad, the youngest competitor in the race on board, was first overall on IRC. It was a disappointing day for Windrose with skipper Ashok Mani retiring the 1961 Admiral’s Cup winner 90 minutes after the start as a precautionary measure after identifying a few issues of concern with the boat. At 1700hr, Alive was leading the race to Hobart on line honours and ORCi. Rumbeat, skippered by Justin Barr, was leading on PHS in Division 2 and overall, while Quest was leading on PHS in Division 1. Talofa had recovered well from her slow start and was leading on AMS overall and in Division 2, as well as on IRC in Division 2, while Jeff Cordell’s Mumm 36, B&G Advantage, was leading on AMS in Division 1. The forecast for the rest of Sunday is for west to south westerly winds averaging 25 to 35 knots for Banks Strait and adjacent areas, very gusty in the late evening and persisting into early Monday morning before easing to 10-15 knots (average) by 0800hr Monday. The fleet will take on the challenges of Banks Strait overnight before heading down the spectacular east coast of Tasmania. The 285 nautical mile race is expected to finish in Hobart on Monday 28 December 2020. 07.01.2022 For those of you who are wondering what our Jon Sanders is up to - we just received an email - weve left it word for word We love reading it and hearing Jon...s voice in our head as we read. Hi all From St Maarten Caribbean Thanks to my iPhone connected to The mariner I kinda know whats happening in Australia And the world Got plenty of time to read the Iphone. Lock down here like Australia including night curfew Im Limited to yacht but can walk to near well stocked Super Market. Apparently plenty food on the Island The local Prime Minister is telling people to stock up because if silly Billys keep going out and not distancing she is going to lock everything including Super Markets and total curfew Except emergency whatever. Paul was worried about his and everybody socialising at the Heineken Regatta a week before I arrived. Biggest yachting regatta in the Caribbean Lot of mega rich Holliday etc here. But she said on the radio (the other day) she stopped all incoming flights at regatta time Got a lot of flak for it But it worked She said last night Dutch St Maarten has had two hospitalised. One of those died More with virus. Not many all caught overseas. St Maarten / St Martin Is a small well populated Island France has 60% of land Dutch 40% Population local citizens About 40,000 French And near same Dutch The division was by treaty 1648 It is the only common border France and Holland have. On the island there is no visible border. The French President appoints a Prefect and islanders have seats in French parliament similar to other French territories France has the largest economic zone in the world France has islets in the Coral Sea In other words France is not far from Australias Gt Barrier Reef. The king of Holland appoints a Governor and the Dutch side of island elect a membership parliament like our State Parliament. The Dutch have 3 similar parliaments in the region St Maarten - here Curaao and Aruba. The Dutch also have other Islands Direct control from Holland. The British U.S. France And Holland Have island territories in the region. I am locked here in the lagoon mariner Paul is in the super yacht section across the harbour. A Irish guy in charge of a Swan yacht at end of my jetty In his 30s And I went across the harbour in his fast tender to have a couple of drinks with Paul and his lady partner other night. Im permitted to be over there because Im part of Pauls setup. But not the other guy. When I got here I sent all the ocean samples to Curtin University by FedEx. They said would take 40 odd days I suppose it will get there in due course. I might be coming up 81 years age with pre-existing whatever but better Perie Banou 11 than a cruise liner Like the rest of the lazy twits travel on. Iv ordered via Paul a shade cloth for this yacht from North Sails. They bit expensive that lot but will be good. I would like it here maybe Tropical but compulsory Panama Canal. Anything can change but at moment when time comes the Panama Canal remains open to me. I would have to wait 2 weeks at Panama - isolation before transit Meantime locked in here etc And French Polynesia to South Pacific closed . I could resupply at sea I believe Ive got plenty of time. Weeks or months- who knows. Then Nuka Hiva, Tahiti, Bora Bora will be open again. So I am locked in here. Worse than that I hear the Quokka Arms at Rottnest Island (Thats the other end of the earth) Has locked me out. Gosh thats terrible. British Virgin Islands closed (overnight 16 hr sail). Ive got plenty supplies on board. I need Paul to put some Credit on my Samsung. Im fuelled and watered up. In due course need a bottom paint. I believe, and always have believed over last 45 years Im 12 hours time behind WA. That is Perth is + 8 hrs gmt And St Martin/St Maarten is - 4 hrs gmt According to my dumb brain = gmt - 12 hrs to WA. Any way I just B&G Bermuda north of me. If one had a melt down at HMAS Stirling Rockingham and burnt a hole thru the centre of the earth the hole would come out in Bermuda. David Dicks knows all about this 180degrees different longitude and same latitude. Except N north. Thank you Rob Martin from Clientsat - satellite phones - Voice & Data airtime for keeping this channel open Hard for him too. Every one closing slowing stopping. Kindest regards to all Jon

06.01.2022 WELCOME 2020 L2H ENTRANT FOOTLOOSE You gotta love the determination of a small boat when they take on the challenge of the Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race. Th...e locally built Young 88, Footloose, just inspires you with what they achieve each year as they return to the race. Stewart Geeves and his crew first entered the race in 2010 and did not waste anytime showing the fleet what they could achieve in an 8.8 metre yacht. When you dive into the history of Footloose you discover that this boat is destined to make the finish line, no matter what! In 2010 Geeves had an outstanding performance in his first L2H race. Taking out the overall win Footloose was faced with an early challenge after breaking the tiller in Banks Strait. Quick thinking by the crew had the tiller repaired with gaffer tape for Footloose to continue racing to Hobart for the win. The Footloose crew were at the mercy of the tides and weather gods in 2013 when they spent 8 hours stuck on the hard after the start in the Tamar River. This did not deter Geeves, but when a gale force storm hit the fleet down the East Coast of Tasmania, Footloose was only one of seven boats to finish. With grit, determination and a whole lot of support cheering them on, Footloose arrive in Hobart to a very warm welcome. This will the 11th year for Geeves and his crew racing Footloose in the L2H and as a regular in the results I’m sure they will sail hard and fast to the finish. 03.01.2022 WELCOME 2020 ENTRANT ADVANTEDGE A labour of love and a passion for sailing has seen the Jones family come together to undertake a massive makeover of their In...glis 47, AdvantEdge for this year’s Launceston the Hobart. Andrew and Michelle Jones took a break from racing AdvantEdge 8 years ago to support their son, Josh’s, sailing career and since then the boat has been waiting patiently on a hardstand ready for her return to racing. AdvantEdge raced in the L2H between 2010-2012 and her last race, before temporary retirement was in the 3 Peaks Race. It has been a race against time to get the boat ready, with Fred Barrett Yacht Design modifications and Salter Marine contributing to the makeover. The Jones family have been working long hours, in a team effort, as they bring AdvantEdge back to her former glory. Last year saw Andrew’s brother Michael Jones competing in the L2H in his boat Ambition, but this year the two brothers will be joined by both their son’s, Sam and Josh, and an experienced crew as AdvantEdge tests her capability in a competitive fleet. I think you will agree AdvantEdge is looking like a hot contender for the L2H. 02.01.2022 Clarence presenting the Windsurfer pennant to the club for use in the Start sequences. Many thanks to Jo and Southern Windsurfers for sourcing the flag for us.

02.01.2022 WELCOME 2020 ENTRANT FLYIN’ SCUD A veteran of offshore racing, Adam Goode will be no stranger to the challenges of the East Coast of Tasmania. Racing his Lyon...’s 40, Flyin’ Scud, heralding from Port Huon, Goode will be joined by a mixed crew of Tasmanian and Queensland sailors. Although Goode has only competed in one L2H, he certainly has the off shore credentials with 12 Sydney to Hobart’s under his belt to add experience to the crew dynamic. His crew will include locals, Jeremy Ford, Marcus Carter, Robert Knoop, Victoria Logan and Stuart Denholm. The two Queensland crew, Natasha Edwards and Brent Dowton may be looking to keep themselves rugged up as they acclimatise to the cooler sailing conditions, but the distraction of the scenic conditions of the Tasmanian coastline will no doubt be a winner. 02.01.2022 Tamar Yacht Club would like to wish a Happy Easter to all their members and supporters. Although we are sadly not on the water at the moment, we aim to keep bringing sailing content to our supporters so when sailing returns, we remember what our boats look like! With it being Easter, it makes sense to start by taking a walk down memory lane and checking out these photos of the Three Peaks Race from The Examiner. We encourage you to share in the comments below any memorable s...tories from the race or even some of your own photos. Enjoy! https://www.examiner.com.au//memories-of-the-three-peaks/

02.01.2022 For those of you that wondered what happened to the pennants that used to hang in the bar in Park St, heres a little update. They are in the process of being washed and dried(hanging in the fig tree) before they are hung down at the Beauty Point club house. Some of the pennants have a club name on them but many dont..... maybe we should ask the brains trust out in FB land if they know the stories behind some of them! Looking forward to seeing them brightening up the walls again.

01.01.2022 WELCOME 2020 L2H ENTRANT HIP-NAUTIC Like a shiny new toy the newly commissioned Sun Fast 3300, Hip-Nautic, hit the River Derwent today with her smart new ward...robe for her maiden sail and test run. Recently arrived from France, the pocket rocket size boat has a radical offshore look, but is designed to be versatile, for both inshore and offshore racing, sailing short-handed and fully crewed. The smile on new owner Jean-Pierre Ravanat’s face, as the sails were hoisted, said it all. Ravanat has entered his new boat in this year’s L2H with plans to sailed two handed with his mate Richard Boult. The arrival of the Hip-Nautic on the Tasmanian sailing scene is generating lots of interest and with only a short time to tune up the boat, Ravanat will be spending most days between now and the start preparing the boat to race.
