25.01.2022 The big man doing more of the jumping of all the things. What a star. Big thanks to Jaime for her care and attention to his training. Australian Warmblood Horse Association (AWHA) Ltd #awhaapprovedstallion #kinnordyrilke #warmbloodsarewinners #whatsnext
25.01.2022 Another fantastic opportunity to grab a spectacular mare, this one by River Dance out of a mare by Gymnastik Star carrying bloodlines of Graf Landau and Winterkoenig so on every line if the pedigree we have FEI horses and international level horses, not just pretty faces here. She is, however, very pretty and a really feminine mare but she can move the house down. Ive said this already in several places but I would love people who buy foals I bred to keep in touch, let me know how they are going, send photos, let me know if you are selling. If the new owner would like to get in touch, Id be thrilled! Also be thrilled to have her back!
23.01.2022 Sunday morning long reining with Kinnordy Rilke. We went about two kilometres to the train line and back doing sightseeing and some speed walking past the solar farms and greeting the neighbors. Such a good boy. Really glad I pushed myself to take him out after waking up with painful hands today. Luckily he is light in the reins. Hoping to get back in the vehicle very shortly.
23.01.2022 Another update on the continued adventures of the big man Kinnordy Rilke (River Dance imp/dec x PM Kinnordy Gala - Graf Landau/Winterkoenig). Jaime took him to an inter club eventing day and he jumped two clear rounds and scored over 62% in his dressage test. She reports he was well behaved and enjoying his jumping. Rilke turns 11 years old this year and with this partnership with Jaime Page he is reinventing himself into an eventer now. There isnt much he hasnt done bless ...him. Thank you Jaime for bravely taking on a mature stallion and making magic. I just love seeing him doing all the things and he loves to jump! I should pop in a thanks to Train Teach Trim and Richard and Jenny who were always there to help me with this horse over the years and who believed in him (and encouraged me). Thanks to Dave van Dijk who started Rilke jumping and took him hunting when plenty of folks said it couldnt be done.
22.01.2022 The gorgeous Tanderra WoodBank River Song (aka Mister) full brother to Kinnordy Rilke and TWB Romance. Three year old AWHA studbook (pending) colt by Riverdance (imp/dec) out of PrM Kinnordy Gala (also the dam of TWB Luftschloss and TWB Garland Gem). Gala was by Graf Landau (imp/dec) out of a Winterkoenig (imp/dec) mare so plenty of jumping blood. Jaime Page has the lad looking a million dollars and you can see how trainable he is on his very first look at fences. I could be terribly mature and blow a big raspberry to all those haters who has this and that to say about my breeding and this colt..... but I wont (being terribly smug instead).
21.01.2022 I have had two horses founder and its an experience I never want to repeat. Happily the lessons from Jenny Austin and Richard van Dijk have meant that everyone is now on the right path and now living up here in Pirie they are under the care of Natalie van Amstel and their hooves are terrific. Finding trimmers who can guide me on the best diet, exercise and environment has been key. Now with a little pony to care for too, I need to be extra vigilant, but I should note the two horses who founders were big horses with no previous history of laminitis. No one is safe.
20.01.2022 Kinnordy Rilke has taken home his first ribbon in Queensland with Jaime Page. Good job team! It was the right colour too Australian Warmblood Horse Association (AWHA) Ltd #awhaapprovedstallion #hannoverian
17.01.2022 More lovely photos of Kinnordy Rilke in his new job up in sunny Queensland with Jaime Page Australian Warmblood Horse Association (AWHA) Ltd #awhaapprovedstallion
14.01.2022 The very beautiful young stallion Tanderra WoodBank River Song bred here in SA by River Dance imp/dec out of PrM Kinnordy Gala, now in Queensland with Jaime Page. She has him looking a treat and he has a bright future Im sure.
13.01.2022 The gorgeous TWB River Song by Riverdance (imp/dec) now in Queensland with Jaime Page. Full brother to Kinnordy Rilke and TWB Romance.
11.01.2022 Another gorgeous young mare by Kinnordy Rilke, this girl Redbanks Rivka owned by Ali Kirkman and just started under saddle. I love seeing the babies grow up and knowing they have great homes. This one is just a bit special.
11.01.2022 A reflection on todays work with Lofty.
10.01.2022 Something we need to check regularly and get good at knowing whats normal for each of our horses, as we head into Spring in the Southern Hemisphere.
08.01.2022 My new cover image is of my young stallion, Tanderra WoodBank Luftschloss (aka Lofty) at the Australian Warmblood Horse Association (AWHA) Ltd tour event. Photo credit is Ponderosa Stud Warmbloods. Lofty is a five year old studbook stallion by Londonderry (IFS) out of PrM Kinnordy Gala (Graf Landau imp/dec) - the same dam as Kinnordy Rilke, TWB River Song and TWB Romance to name a few of her amazing babies. Lofty is very special and we are on a long road together and learni...ng a lot as we go, doing things differently. A while ago I was looking for recommendations for a show halter for him for this event. I bought this one from James Alcock and he also made me a small thin strap to hold the bit Lofty is wearing here in the photo which is a trotting overcheck bit. My friend Christine Wenham correctly pointed out that as a stallion he should be in a bridle. Always one for a loophole, on reading the rule it says a bit must be fitted. It doesnt say that the lead must be attached to the bit, which it is not for Lofty. Yes, he has worn a bridle many times and he been long reined in a bridle with a bit but he a) doesnt need to have a bit for me to have effective control of him and b) he does not respond well to bit pressure. So I work him without a bit at home and often now without a lead rope and sometimes without a halter. I do use a guide rope which you can see in the photos below. He responds to signals on the guide rope. This is for a few reasons, mostly because gripping anything in my hands is painful and I have nearly no strength in my left arm and very little in my right arm. If he pulls on the lead rope I will probably have to let go. But he knows if I touch him on the guide rope, that means the same to him as using a lead rope. I totally get that people think I am batty and that I cant do this with a stallion and that is okay for people to think whatever they like. We have had to find a way forward with a horse that does not like being touched (except for nose rubs) and a handler that cant touch or hold much. I am always searching for a way forward for us and some days are hard and like yesterday I stood in front of him and said I dont know what to do. Today I found a way to explain what I wanted to him. We are on our own timetable. Im hoping he will do colt selection next summer but we will take it one day at a time. By the way check out the hind leg on the last trot photo. I know people are obsessed by front leg action but I have to say seeing the bend he can get in the hindleg with next to no training..... imagine. All photos thanks to Cheryl Hatswell who generously allowed us to come to her property for this event.
08.01.2022 "The concept of a flight animal, applied to horses, is just a label" (Dr Francesco De Giorgio) Heres a really fascinating concept; are horses flight animals - ...yes or no? One of the reasons I repeatedly hear and see mentioned as a reason not to train horses with Positive Reinforcement - is that they are prey animals! Only predators can be trained with food!! Um, no!! According to Dr Francesco De Giorgio, a biologist who specialises in animal cognition, horses have been unfairly labelled. Horses are social cognitive (thinking, reasoning & remembering) animals. They experience moments of flight behaviour, but so do we and we dont label ourselves as flight animals! What he discusses in his brief video is the ethical reasoning behind labelling horses inaccurately as flight animals. What he sees happen in the traditional equestrian industry, is a cycle. We label horses as flight animals, therefore we must control them by aggressive measures, which therefore creates a Flight response in the horse. But he points out that animals in the wild are just cognitive animals, they may have moments of flight, but it doesnt define them, its a label created by the traditional horse industry. https://www.epona.tv/the-flight-animal-fallacy
08.01.2022 My rule is always no hat no ride (or drive). This caused me to be badgered to wear a dress hat when I was competing in driving but I couldnt for my own sake and because I can hardly enforce a rule for my children that I didnt follow. When the EA made us upgrade our helmets I had a whinge at the cost having to retire a good helmet but seeing posts like this makes you stop and think. I had a dear friend and someone I admired as a horseman lose everything in a fall from a horse in his driveway. Just walking in from a ride and the horse shied. He hit his head and ended up having to learn how to walk and talk again. He lost his marriage his home all the horses. I think of him every time I reach for my helmet.
07.01.2022 Good training is done in small moments on good days. (Anna Blake) Anna has this magical ability to post just what I need to read (no, seriously). Im learning that I am not the supreme ruler of my horses and we will be going at their pace. Now having a young one about and a very distractable sensitive horse Im learning that in spades. Follow Annas blog for more great stuff that keep you thinking about what you are doing and why.
07.01.2022 I post a lot about TWB Luftschloss but for a change... here is Kinnordy Rilke jumping all the things with Jaime Page in the saddle. Lofty and Rilke are out of the same mare, the magnificent Kinnordy Gala by Graf Landau (imp/dec). Rilke is the more sensible brother and showing the goods with Jamies guidance. This is his first time at jumping club with Jaime having a pop round the 80-90cms. Im looking forward to seeing Rilkes adventures while Lofty works on getting on the d*#n horsefloat
07.01.2022 Great opportunity to buy a very good mare by Kinnordy Rilke. As all his foals have been, this one is super trainable and she has had an excellent upbringing.
06.01.2022 This is a very interesting discussion. I had many people say when looking at my stallions and young horses that they were not flashy movers and were too quiet. Nevertheless I had two FEI stallions, in two disciplines and one sired an Olympic representative. I was told oh lots of stallions do that, well not really, at most four every four years in Australia and precious few are Australian based and you can actually see them rather than shopping from a catalog. They both ...actually competed in Australia, not just in parts unknown in another country or worse, superstars of the arena at home. But still, not flash enough. My belief was in temperament first and second, good type and a brain and soundness having bought many unsound horses over the years and many that were not trainable for someone with physical limitations. If I ever bred horses again I wouldnt do anything different. All those people who said they wanted something flashier, where are they now? I look at how well the foals I bred are gong now and particularly Mister who was rejected left right and centre, hes just looking every inch a superstar now but so many people want the facade but cant handle it let alone train it, and will it last?
05.01.2022 Ive been working away on a new project which is multifaceted and a bit exciting... there is a Youtube channel coming and Im resuscitating my blog so there will be media all over the place. Stay tuned! A new Justaddguineapig project in the works.
03.01.2022 An update on Tanderra WoodBank Luftschloss (aka Lofty) who has had an ongoing drama with a baby tooth that would not fall out and was causing him some distress. I can report that it was successfully removed yesterday by Dr Lachie Cameron of Cameron Vet Services (https://www.cameronvets.com/) and Lofty is doing really well. His gum had to be cut and then the root snapped off and things were messy but the sucker is now in a bag and Lofty is stitched up and being a good patient.... Dr Cameron @cameronvets was so patient and quiet with Lofty and I could almost not believe it was all over after all the dramas we have had. Lofty also has a friend! Chamel Fields Jete (Jet) joined us on Sunday for the sole purpose of being #1 Lofty friend and he is smashing that job and Lofty is so much more relaxed already. They are getting along really well, no squabbling over food and Lofty has been rolling and lying down regularly which are things he has not done much of in his life. Truly sometimes the smallest things do make the biggest difference.
02.01.2022 Our smallest and newest member of the TPH tribe, Chamel Fields Jete (aka Jet) has a full time job looking after Lofty. One of the things that Lofty has been working on with me is float loading and Jet is going to be part of the next step in this; Lofty needs to be relaxed and confident standing in the float before we do up the back. Lofty loads beautifully at liberty but he lacks the confidence to relax and chill out in the float. So today Jet came out and we had a session loading into the float and relaxing in the float enjoying a treat. Lofty was very curious and watched for most of the session. Im planning on doing this with Jet for a week or so and then include Lofty but we will see how we go.
01.01.2022 Update from Jaime Page in sunny Queensland... four years ago Rilke was competing in the harness at the RAHS now hes eventing up north. Wonderful weekend eventing at FCHT. Busy weekend with a full team of 4. The boys did not disappoint with all of them stars in their own way.... Kinnordy Rilke had his first start eventing and was a superstar. Rider communication kept him out of the placings but so happy with his progress over the past 6 months.... Overall a great weekend. The Fraser Coast team run an awesome event each time. Also thank you to the event sponsors Station Square shopping centre they have been major sponsors for Fraser Coast many years. 01.01.2022 I have schooled Rilke at home long reining in the Lightrider bitless bridle and like the post below, I found the transition seamless and I could do all his lateral work and half steps just the same, if not better without the bit. Lofty much prefers to go without a bit and Im intending to start Rebecca without one.
01.01.2022 YOU CANNOT BECOME THE HERD LEADER. I hate having to break it to you but you cannot become the herd leader no more than a horse can become the leader of a he...rd of rabbits, or a cougar can become the leader of a herd of horses. Not only you dont spend 24/7 living with your horses and dont have the same needs as them but also the "all-mighty herd leader" is more of a man-made concept. Recent studies on movement initiation in feral groups have shown the following: - Initiation by departure can be displayed by any member of the group. Anyone can lead, anyone can follow! - Initiation by departure is not limited to particular females. e.g. lead mares. - Departing high-ranking horses are followed by other more often than low ranking one. - The most motivated horse initiate departure. For example, marches towards water are almost always initiated by lactating mares. - Departing by herding is only displayed by males. (K. Kreuger, Flauger, B., Farmer, K. and Hemelrijk, C. Movement initiation in groups of feral horses. Behavioural Processes 103, 91-101.) Another important thing to remember is that horses avoid aggressive dominance display. Aggression is counter-productive to their survival goal. Think; if feral horses spent all their energy fighting most of them would be injured, in poor condition and they would kill each other or be killed by predators. There is little aggression in stable herds, however abnormal level of aggression may be seen in domestic horses kept on livery yards that run inappropriate horse management. A training system holding beliefs such as learn to be the alpha horse and instructing you to use aversives (therefore aggression) to move your horse and his body parts is not based on science and is not natural. (No matter what they decide to call it!) 01.01.2022 Today, were re-sharing this interesting research from Dr David Marlin _______ HOW TO KEEP YOUR HORSE COOL IN THE HEAT!... SHEET OR NO SHEET? BLACK OR WHITE? WET OR DRY? I get asked these sort of questions a lot. Some horses have to have rugs on because of flies. So is it better to wet it down or not? What about dark horses? Do they get hotter? Here is a very simple demonstration. In physics and thermoregulation we use 15cm/6in diameter copper spheres painted black to approximate how the body reacts to air temperature and radiation from the sun. Inside the middle of each sphere is a temperature probe and this is connected to a datalogger. Each sphere is calibrated and "naked" they all behave the same. These spheres are the type used in the WBGT Index which we use to manage major events. The IOC use this for both human athletes and horses. So this is what I did to each sphere 1) Left uncovered 2) Covered with WET WHITE cotton 3) Covered with WET BLACK cotton 4) Covered with DRY WHITE cotton 5) Covered with DRY BLACK cotton The conditions when I was doing this were 36-37C and 24-27 %RH with a naked globe temperature of around 52C. RESULTS DRY WHITE cotton keeps the sphere ~2-3C COOLER than the naked sphere DRY BLACK cotton keeps the sphere 3-4C WARMER WET WHITE & WET BLACK cotton drop the temperature by around 25C (due to evaporation of water) over the first 20 min. WET WHITE is better over 60 min than WET BLACK. At 60 min WET WHITE is still around 10C cooler than the naked sphere. RECOMMENDATIONS To keep your horse cool on hot days, dont use a sheet/rug at all. Spray your horse down every few hours. If you have to use a sheet, ideally use a WHITE or light coloured lightweight sheet and wet it every 60-90 minutes during the hotter part of the day. https://www.facebook.com/233421046862124/posts/1427276360809914/?d=n
01.01.2022 http:// Friday Fact - Using positive reinforcement // Research shows that scratching/rubbing the wither area is relaxing and enjoyable for (most) horses, so as a pri...mary positive reinforcer it is very convenient and in a lot of cases easier to administer immediately than food. Secondary positive reinforcement means associating a reward with a marker (such as the words good boy/girl, a whistle or a click of a clicker), and enables a little more time for the trainer between the behaviour and release of reward. To be at all effective, you must use the marker at the precise moment of the correct behaviour and then follow soon after with the scratch on the withers or delivery of food. This period between the marker and the reward should not exceed 3 seconds. If using a verbal marker it is important not to devalue your marker by saying the words good boy/girl frivolously and without the link of of reward. You should ensure your words are distinct and only used in correlation with the reward.
