21.01.2022 #Repost @soldiersrd A couple years back, we needed a spot in Sydney to shoot portraits, for dirt cheap (keep ze overheads down lol) and we got linked up with @taniawursig An talented Australian artist and painter living in a cute studio and apartment, with her daughter. So, we snapped up the offer to use her studio in exchange for a portrait experience for her and her whnau (all non-Mori). In through her doors came tons of bookings, and we were able to capture lots of a...mazing images, because of her manaakitanga, allowing a couple of strangers, a baby, and heaps of Mori whnau from all over, to her space. We connected, shared ideas, experiences and mostly, culture. She had a deep connection with Tahiti already, and their people. As subjects but more, as family (she luckily gets to spend lots of time there). So, lots of the Mori elements she witnessed while watching whakawhanaungatanga, she understood. We had lots in common. But culture, was the leading topic and we spoke about our interpretation and understanding of it, identity, and what it meant to us. We became life long friends. We talked about image use, how ours had been used and sold in the past without permission. She gave insight from her own experiences, and organically, we came to the conclusion. That she would paint us. But, the experience would be a collab, with permission, respect, our mahi blended and interpreted by her hands. And we would have a say in the image and its journey. We knew, it would be a beautiful acknowledgement of the cultural connection we had with Tania. Fast forward to now, a year or so later, and shes painting us!! Like right now lol. And, its absolutely amazing. We cant wait to fill you in on the whole kaupapa for this image, but just quietly, there will be prints to buy!!!! P.S We want to flip how cultural appropriation is often perceived. How using a culture that isnt your own has a process. Through the right steps, and with indigenous voices honoured & heard. That with real connection, sharing of space and ideas. But most importantly, massive krero around culture and identity. Proving, you can culturally APPRECIATE a culture that isnt your own, and their values and beliefs . See more

21.01.2022 Continuing on the path of retrospection - Ive been cleaning my studio this week and found a pile of old portfolios with photographs of works dating back to 1991 I found a few more encaustic paintings I did after one of my trips to Spain, I think these are circa 1998-99. The last pic was from the one and only Bull fight I attended... it was a harrowing experience, a sport that makes no sense. @ Andalucia - Espaa

20.01.2022 Daydreams Nightmare - circa 2001 - Oil on wooden Gothic window shutters. At the end of 99 I moved to Barcelona for a year. There I lived a crazy, large life. I met some of the most eccentric people ever with whom I shared some rather interesting experiences. It was one of the best, and at times, worst era of my life, but I would not change a thing. I used this time to really experiment with my work and recorded my experiences in paint, both in my Barcelona studio ...and the studio in Cadaques. These are just 2 of these works. I found old window frames in the Gothic quarter of Barcelona and dragged them back to my studio near Sagrada Familia, the famous Gaudi cathedral. The first set of windows with shutters tells a story of lost love, the second illustrates the times of sheer craziness I lived with a group of people I met in Cadaques. A picturesque seaside village north of Barcelona next to Port Ligat where Salvador Dali resided. This village seems to conjure up surreal connections, one such encounter was Maria, who claimed to be one of Dalis models, and a former performer in the Crazy Horse circus. We formed the Sunday Club and hosted wild parties in her house in the Pyrenees. 20.01.2022 What a treat to listen to my dear friend Mareikura Brightwell speaking in one of his native tongues, Maori, whilst painting these powerful Wahine. This podcasts was released yesterday through @Native Stories The discussion is an important one about colonization and the comparisons between French colonialism in Tahiti and English colonialism in Aotearoa and the important work Mareikura is doing within his tribe and negotiating the repatriation of stolen artifacts from the Br...itish museums etc. Mareikura is of both Tahitian and Maori lineage, and has lived in both countries, so is able to provide important insights as a Polynesian living under these 2 colonial rules as well as within his respective cultures . 15.01.2022 Spanish Flamenco series. Another 1999 Flashback. During 98 and 99 I made several extended trips to Spain, then in 2000 I moved to Barcelona for 1 year. I became obsessed with the Spanish Flamenco culture and haunted several Gypsy barios to get my fix. When I was in Granada I visited the Gypsy caves every night to watch them sing and dance their passion and pain. One evening, the Gypsy king noted my enthusiastic attendance and granted me vip free entry to see as much Flame...nco as I wanted for the rest of my stay. I would madly photograph each dance, then one night my camera broke , thankfully I had my sketch book, I began furiously sketching, trying to capture the passion of this wild music and the gestures of this explosive dance. One of the most memorable moments in my life. I have a book full of these frantic flamenco sketches, some of which I turned into paintings and others into loose encaustic works. 14.01.2022 Daydreams Nightmare continued. These small works were painted on pieces of natural slate I collected in the hills around Marias house. They were part of the same exhibition I had in Barcelona in 2001. Once again depicting a turbulent yet incredibly enriching period of my life. Most of these stones I painted in Marias isolated home at the foot of the Pyrenees in the village of Cadaques. These bring back such potent memories of a life I lived to the absolute extreme. 12.01.2022 Nude studies circa 1998. I used to attend life drawing groups and also invite models into my studio to draw from life. It really is one of the best tools to train your eyes to really see, as well as exercise your hand to swiftly capture raw moments and emotion.
