25.01.2022 Tasmanians have lost over $35,000 to puppy scams this year, with people sending money for pets that dont exist. To date, there have been 11 Tasmanian victims who have lost approximately $35,000 to overseas scammers. Scammers set up fake websites or ads on online classifieds and social media pretending to sell sought-after dog breeds and will take advantage of the fact that you cant travel to meet the puppy in person.... The scammer will usually ask for up-front payments via money transfer to pay for the pet and transport it to you. Usually after the initial deposit the scammer will make new excuses to request more money such as delayed transport and shipping cost. Once you make the payments, the seller will cease all contact. The only safe option is to purchases or adopt a pet from someone you can contact in person or purchase from a well know reputable breeder that you have researched well, Detective Sergeant Turner said. Scam websites can look very convincing but remember if the price looks too good to be true, it probably is. If you are in doubt, seek advice from a reputable breeders association, vet or local pet shop. If you think you have been scammed, contact your bank or financial institution as soon as possible, Detective Sergeant Turner said. 25.01.2022 I am honoured that my appointment as Secretary of DPFEM and Commissioner of Police has been extended for two years. The past six months have been one of the most challenging times we have experienced as an agency, and I am pleased to have the opportunity to continue to provide leadership in the period ahead. I am incredibly proud of the way we have responded and adapted as a community and an agency during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the unprecedented restrictions on ever...yday freedoms, and the difficult circumstances experienced by many, we have worked together to bring COVID-19 under control and undoubtedly saved many lives. I want to thank all Tasmanians for their individual commitment to the response. We know the COVID-19 pandemic will be a global issue for an extended period and its time to plan for the transition to a long-term sustainable response structure. While I remain State Controller for the pandemic, I have returned to my role as Secretary of DPFEM and Commissioner of Tasmania Police. I have delegated the management of the pandemic response to the Deputy State Controller and Deputy Commissioner, Scott Tilyard. As State Controller I have overall responsibility for strategic planning and preparedness for all emergencies. We must be ready to respond to the threat of concurrent all-hazard emergencies, including bushfires and floods, and the competing demands on our resources. Outside of emergency management, there is more I want to achieve in the next two years, including in the health and wellbeing space and ensuring our workforce has the resources and training they need to keep themselves, and the community, safe. I am proud to have been part of this agency for more than 40 years and Im looking forward to working with you over the next two years. Darren Hine Secretary of DPFEM Commissioner of Police

23.01.2022 Bridgewater police detected 14 motorists travelling over the speed limit during a traffic operation in the Bowen Bridge area this morning. Sergeant Rob Bessell said one of the drivers was caught travelling 100km/hr over the posted speed limit. Concerningly a 42-year-old man from Lutana was detected travelling at 180 km/hr in an 80km/hr zone.... Police arrested the man and seized his car and he has been bailed to appear in court at a later date. We also caught a learner motorcycle rider travelling at 115km/hr in the same area. Bridgewater Acting Inspector Phil Curtis said he was disappointed so many drivers were caught doing the wrong thing. It is incredibly disappointing that drivers are not heeding the advice of police, especially given the tragic road crashes that have occurred around Tasmania recently, he said. Speeding places drivers, their passengers and other road users at a much higher risk when a collision occurs. Speeding increases stopping distances for vehicles and reduces the time a driver has to respond to risks that are encountered on the road. It is alarming that the message is not getting through to some road users.

03.01.2022 Tasmania Police will use SMS technology to further strengthen home quarantine compliance checking from tomorrow. Since 25 March this year, Tasmania Police has co-ordinated over 36,000 physical checks of those required to home quarantine. This has only been achieved through the support from volunteers within the State Emergency Service, Tasmania Fire Service and up until May, the Australian Defence Force. Recent events in Victoria show there has never been a more important t...ime to reassure the Tasmanian community that Tasmania Police are ensuring that those entering our state who are required to home quarantine, are compliant with their obligations, Acting Inspector John Toohey said. To further support physical checking across the State, Tasmania Police has consulted across Tasmania and abroad to locate a suitable application that would support a technology-based compliance checking model. Acting Inspector Toohey said that Whispir, a product currently used by the Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management (DPFEM) to send out bulk SMS messages was identified as the best solution. The tool uses SMS and mobile phone location services to pinpoint the location of a phone, therefore the location of the person subject to home quarantine. It requires the person to opt in and does not live track the person but provides a map image when the link within the SMS is pressed. The use of the tool does not replace physical checking. It’s being implemented to increase checks being conducted, making sure everyone subject to quarantine conditions is complying with their obligations, for the safety of the Tasmanian community.
