23.01.2022 Our recent King St historic wrapped up last month. The site included bluestone remnants of an 1860s general store and the sandstone remains of a pre gold rush girls boarding school. Sandstone foundations are rare in the archaeological record and it tells us that this building was likely one of the first buildings built in Melbourne! A big thankyou to all involved and who worked so hard particularly those last days! #historicmelbourne #melbournearchaeology #pregoldrushmelbourne

19.01.2022 Earlier today we unearthed a fragmented Frozen Charlotte. Popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these figurines were used as bath toys or baked into cakes during Christmas time. They are associated with a Victorian poem about a girl named Charlotte who froze to death on a New Years Eve sleigh ride. @nationalarchaeologyweek #morbidhistory #frozencharlotte #letthemeatcake #victorianartefacts #archaeologylife #frozencharlottedolls

19.01.2022 Postcard from the Grampians National Park (Gariwerd)! Our project archeaologist Helene recently visited the Ngamadjidj Shelter, one of five Aboriginal art sites in the park. Located in the rugged Wartook Valley, the shelters rock art includes white-painted figures, referred to as Cave of Ghosts. The paintings are unusual because only white clay was used. Remains of campfires and stone tools used by the Jardwadjali people have been found at the site, which suggests it was a favoured camping place. Great interpretation panels line the walking track to the site which is protected by an impressive steel fence. @ Grampians National Park, Victoria

19.01.2022 TerraCulture is currently looking for some student volunteers to help us wash and sort artefacts from a recent historic excavation in the CBD. This is a great opportunity for archaeology students to familiarise themselves with artefact types and gain experience in the process of historic post-excavation work. If you are interested, please send through your CV and availability to Lauren at [email protected]. Experience is not required and opportunities for ongoing involvement may be available. #historicarchaeology #volunteers #melbournearchaeology

19.01.2022 A beautifully conserved, hand painted porcelain brooch, delicate artefacts like these need special care to ensure that their features are preserved. Imagine how lovely this would looked when brand new!

17.01.2022 This beautiful lady was found at the bottom of a well that we excavated in Melbournes cbd recently. 13.01.2022 In honour of Anzac Day yesterday we bring you some more artefacts from our collection: a Bakelite military button and a copper Rising Sun badge. Thanks to our friends at the @awmemorial , the button was identified as coming from the dress uniform jacket of the Royal Australian Air Force and the badge from a slouch hat, both dating to the period of World War II. It is lovely to think that the service and sacrifice of the person or people who wore these is remembered decades a...fter they were lost under the floorboards of a Melbourne pub. 10.01.2022 TerraCulture recently completed three heritage interpretation panels located at Quinlan Rd in Epping; the site included the ruins of a mid 19th century farming homestead.
