25.01.2022 11AM TODAY -- Don't miss The Australia Institute's Budget wrap, register now > https://us02web.zoom.us//4615978/WN_k7Y2xg-KTNugBBRLJN92IA Join the Australia Institute's senior economist Matt Grudnoff and Alison Pennington, senior economist at the Centre for Future Work to unpack everything you need to know about the Budget.

24.01.2022 What does the gas industry have to do with the manufacturing industry all of a sudden? Richard Denniss, explains in The Guardian -- "In recent months the gas industry has started a new political campaign to link its future with the future of manufacturing, for the simple reason that Australians like the manufacturing industry and don’t really like the gas industry. In particular, Australians don’t like the idea that we should frack for more gas under farmland. "The Coalition... government and the gas industry would have Australians believe that the best way to help the manufacturing industry is to help the gas industry first. How convenient. "While it’s clear why the gas industry benefits from receiving billions of dollars of public money and government approvals to frack more gas underneath more Australian farms, it is not at all clear what the manufacturing industry gets out of it. "Why spend billions of dollars subsidising gas with the vague promise it helps our manufacturing industry when we could just spend that amount supporting the actual manufacturing industry directly?"

23.01.2022 "I know people say, 'we've got to back Cormann because it's a Team Australia moment', but I'm on Team Planet," said Ben Oquist, executive director of The Australia Institute on Sky News Australia. "The planet needs somebody who's going to stand up for action on climate change."

22.01.2022 "Budgets are about choices. this year the Government chose to talk a lot about jobs -- but it hasn't actually done a great deal to create jobs," said senior economist Matt Grudnoff, in The Australia Institute's post-budget wrap.

22.01.2022 "Regulation no more ruins the economy than rules ruin a game of football," writes Ben Oquist, executive director at The Australia Institute, via the Sydney Morning Herald. "On Friday, the Morrison government announced that cuts to red tape across childcare, agriculture, medicine and training will be key to its coming budget strategy. "But while it might work for oppositionists to rage against the 'nanny state', what COVID-19 makes clear is that we need our governments to look after our nannies, and our grandfathers too"

21.01.2022 "They can't just be questions of expertise, but they also need to be democratic questions. The Andrews Government has to be accountable and transparent for those types of decisions," said Ebony Bennett, deputy director of The Australia Institute on Sky News Australia. #auspol

21.01.2022 "The National party represents many electorates which have high rates of unemployment and people receiving government support payments, and a high proportion of workers on the minimum wage," writes Richard Denniss in The Guardian. In fact, the Liberal Party's agenda is bad for regional Australia - but the Nationals play along anyway.

20.01.2022 "That's the lesson out of the US. Biden won on climate change," said Ben Oquist, executive director of The Australia Institute on Sky News Australia. "The community is increasingly worried about the costs of not acting. And I think Albo can sharpen up that message and do well politically from it."... #auspol

18.01.2022 "We've seen maladministration, unethical behaviour at the Commonwealth level without any ministerial accountability to accompany that. That Dan Andrews appeared before that enquiry shows that accountability is incredibly important." said Ebony Bennett, deputy director of The Australia Institute on Sky News Australia #auspol

18.01.2022 "This is not a time for freewheeling, ill-considered foreign policy pronouncements," writes Ben Oquist, executive director at The Australia Institute, in the Canberra Times. "The rise of China, its newfound assertiveness, its 'Wolf Warrior' diplomacy and its newly discovered penchant for imposing trade penalties on what it sees as Australian recalcitrance has dramatically accelerated the need to do diplomacy better."

18.01.2022 Enough is enough. Australia needs a Federal Anti-Corruption Watchdog legislated this year. #enough Add your name > https://theaus.in/fedICAC

17.01.2022 "Immense diplomatic pressure on Australia to stop the cheating by using 430 million tonnes of these cheating Kyoto carryover credits." said Ben Oquist, executive director of The Australia Institute on Sky News Australia. #auspol

17.01.2022 "For every 1 job that the tax cuts could potentially create -- about 13,000 jobs -- we could get 160,000 or 12 times as many jobs investing in employment-intensive industries." said Matt Grudnoff, senior economist The Australia Institute on SBS News #auspol

16.01.2022 "Australia has struggled to see itself as a fully-fledged part of this region. It still sees itself and its character and its values very much, I think, in terms of its historical links to Britain & the US." said Jonathan Pearlman, editor of Australian Foreign Affairs and the world editor of The Saturday Paper, on our webinar 'Friends, Allies & Enemies'. 15.01.2022 Have you heard? Multiple states in Australia are planning on introducing a great big new tax on electric vehicles. We've pulled together this handy list to show why that is, most definitely, a BAD idea. Feel free to add your own reasons in the comments below and you can sign The Australia Institute’s petition, calling on State Premiers dump the EV tax, here > https://nb.tai.org.au/no_ev_tax https://medium.com//11-reasons-why-a-great-big-new-tax-on-

14.01.2022 "If we instead invested that money into health, education, services industries, we could create 7-12x times the jobs that we'll get from these income tax cuts, which are targeted largely at the wealthiest Australians" said Ebony Bennett, deputy director of The Australia Institute on Sky News Australia #auspol

11.01.2022 Tax is an investment in our society. Our research shows that tax cuts (especially those benefiting wealthier Australians) make for very poor economic stimulus. Those calling for tax cuts today will be demanding service cuts tomorrow. Don’t let Australians pay the price.... Our open letter opposing the early introduction of the Government's income tax cuts has been signed by more than 40 prominent Australians, economists and academics. Now, you can add your name here > http://theaus.in/tax_investment

11.01.2022 New Australia Institute analysis of yesterday's ABS figures shows how 'ordinary' indexation (CPI) fails low-income Australians. Inflation for essential items has been higher than CPI, while inflation of discretionary items is lower. Our research shows low-income Australians spend 75% of their income on essentials, which means CPI increases to the wages of Australia's lowest income earners only serves to push them further behind.

11.01.2022 Richard Denniss, chief economist at the Australia Institute, unpacks the hypocrisy and ridiculousness of the proposed electric vehicles tax in his latest op-ed in The Guardian -- "The purpose of the tax system isn’t just to collect revenue, it’s to shape society in ways we see fit. "It’s no accident that fresh food is excluded from the GST and it’s no accident that the tax on alcohol is higher than the tax on water. It’s also no accident that some of the biggest oil and gas c...ompanies in Australia pay virtually zero tax. We get the tax system our parliaments can agree on. "In turn, Australia’s tax system is shaped by the distribution of power within our politics and economy. "We tax company profits at lower rates than we tax workers’ wages; we tax income from capital gains at half the rate we tax ordinary income; and we exclude private school fees from the GST but include public transport. We had a carbon tax and then we didn’t. "Tax policy is the pointy end of power politics." Read Richard Denniss' full op-ed here>

10.01.2022 We've seen in those companies like Uber, Deliveroo, Ola, Menulog. Their entire model depends on piercing through the protections for workers that are on Australian soil," said Alison Pennington, senior economist at the Centre for Future Work on Hack on triple j. "When you factor in costs, they are only getting $10 or so an hour. Minimum wage is $19."

09.01.2022 "The budget confirms the government’s commitment to fossil fuels, with token support for renewables on the side," says Richie Merzian, director of The Australia Institute Climate & Energy Program. It’s disappointing to see the renewable energy agencies and the CEFC (Clean Energy Finance Corporation) not coming out with significant increases. In the case of ARENA, it’s a decrease." In the year of Australia’s worst bushfire crisis, there is little in the way of new funding for environmental protection >

09.01.2022 A message to our supporters -- You may have noticed today the blackout of Australians news content on Facebook, including the blackout of pages such as Bureau of Meteorology, State Government health pages and fire services, where much pandemic and bushfire information is distributed. We are alarmed by these developments, and have separately issued a statement to that effect.... But what this message is about is how we continue communicating to you, our supporters. What today's developments have brought into clear effect is that Facebook can turn off any page at any time for any reason. So if you want to ensure that we can always contact you (unless you tell us not to!) please, we urge that you subscribe to our email list at http://theaus.in/subscribe While we will continue to post on our Facebook page because so many of you have told us this is where you want to see our work, we do not want to suddenly face the prospect of being 'turned off' at the whim of a global tech giant. Please subscribe today to make sure we don't lose touch with you http://theaus.in/subscribe

08.01.2022 "That could see a situation of gas energy poverty. People stuck with gas which is more expensive." said Richie Merzian, Climate & Energy Program director at The Australia Institute on ABC News. #auspol

05.01.2022 "Really, it's an absurd idea and it should be dropped," said Noah Schultz-Byard, director of The Australia Institute South Australia on ABC News SA. "If the Government goes through with this plan, they will be taking SA in the wrong direction & slamming the brakes on EV uptake in the state."

04.01.2022 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Statement in response to Facebook’s announcement it will restrict sharing or viewing news content in Australia
