24.01.2022 We’re excited to announce that Janice Haynes, The Lady of History, will be conducting guided tours of the c. 1939 Red Cottage and the c. 1859 Head Lighthouse Ke...epers Quarters at the Cape Schanck Lighthouse Reserve. Normally not open to the public this very special opportunity is a diversification of the program because we still can’t take tours of the Lighthouse or the Museum due to the COVID 19 restrictions. How unique and different to be able to go inside the cottages and get a feel for what life would have been like for the keepers at Cape Schanck in days gone by. Hear stories about the lighthouse keepers and their families, the births, the deaths, the fun times and the wild weather and shipwrecks, see authentic exhibits and learn about how a lighthouse operates. Watch out for whales too as its whale season and quite a few have been sighted! Lighthouse keeper cottage tours will commence from the Red Cottage at 11am, 12noon, 1pm and 2pm on Saturdays and Sundays during the June/July 2020 school holidays and then on selected dates throughout 2020 and beyond. Tour duration is approximately 45 minutes. Unfortunately the Red Cottage is not wheelchair accessible and there is a small step at the White Head Lightkeeper’s House. Please let the tour guide know if you have special needs. Contactless payment by card is also available on site, but please note that there is a maximum number of 10 people only per tour, so book in early to ensure your place. Please arrive at least 10 minutes early to register and look at the Red Cottage displays. In response to COVID-19, the Lady of History team have introduced the following protocols to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of visitors and staff at the Cape Schanck Lighthouse Reserve. * We ask you not to come on the tour if you are experiencing any cold or flu-like symptoms * You must register your first name and phone number for contact tracing purposes * Please use cards only for contactless transactions (no cash) * Your household group must maintain a distance of 1.5m from others and staff and follow directional signage * Hand sanitiser and handwashing facilities are available * Be aware that building capacity restrictions apply with a maximum of 10 people for Cottage tours * Comply with the directions of The Lady of History staff * Download the COVIDSafe App if you are able to do so We will be also implementing an ongoing cleaning regime and disinfecting of surfaces routine between tours. Lighthouse keeper cottage tours cost $9 Adult, $5 Child with a discount price of $23 for a family of 2 adults and 2 children ($5 saving). Payment is by card only (no cash). Lighthouse merchandise on sale includes magnets, ‘Send a Message’ bottles, coolers and badges as well as T-Shirts, books and cards. Soon we will have Lighthouse models and you can make an order for these and lighthouse maps now. Also available at the Red Cottage is water, snacks, icy poles and ice creams, as well as coffee and tea. Donations are appreciated to help us purchase a defibrillator for the Cape Schanck Lightstation site. All tour guides have AMSA (Australian Maritime Authority) qualifications, current First Aid and Working with Children checks. Janice Haynes is the representative for Victoria on the Lighthouses of Australia Inc. Executive Committee and is available for presentations and talks on lighthouses, and she has several lighthouse shows for school groups. The Lady of History conducts tours under a Parks Victoria Tour Operator License. As soon as the Cape Schanck Lighthouse and Museum tours are available again they will be promoted via social and print media. Watch out for that notification. Keep on Shining the Light! 09.01.2022 We are disappointed to come to you with this news but following the latest advice from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) the Cape Schanck Light...house tours, Museum and Cottages will be temporarily closed from Thursday 9 July 2020 until further notice. Until we are open again please enjoy these photographs of the rooms set up in the 1859 Head Lighthouse Keeper's Quarters. This building along with the Lighthouse and the Assistant Lighthouse keeper's Quarters (Museum) were all designed by the colonial architect Charles Maplestone, and now are considered to be the most authentic Lighthouse buildings in Australia. Staged by The Lady of History the Lighthouse keeper cottage tours take people back into the time of the Lighthouse keepers and their families and tell their stories. As soon as Lighthouse, Museum and Cottage tours can resume we will let you know. In the meantime please stay home, well and happy. 07.01.2022 Due to the restrictions I couldn't be at the Cape Schanck Lighthouse today or over ILLW 2020 running tours. Instead though I have my lovely stained glass panel of the Cape Schanck Lighthouse to keep me happy, although I can't wait to get back there in person. By the way only one person in the whole world got my Morse Code message ---.. ---.. and that person was not in Australia! So what does it mean? It is 88 or in old telegraph speak short for 'Hugs and Kisses' which you pu...t at the end of your telegram if that's what you wanted to say to the receiver.
