21.01.2022 Posted @withregram @cherishbyher The coming showcase this month highlights my heart to explore the connections between Singapore and Perth. During my time in Perth, I had the opportunity to revisit spaces that detailed my biographical history as well as Singapore's history. Some of these histories do not manifest in a physical space. Some consist of ideological shifts birthing from the late 80s and early 90s. Whilst doing so, I noticed that many of those histories and conne...ctions were left undocumented. Hence, I truly believe that to rewrite history fostering safe spaces between the two states would be a great step forward. Through the festival, we hope to activate PerthxSingaporean cultural connections, histories of colonialism and resistance, and provide a seed for future potential reimaginings. As Arundhati Roy writes in her essay ‘The Pandemic is a Portal’ "Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew. This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next. We can choose to walk through it, dragging the carcasses of our prejudice and hatred, our avarice, our data banks and dead ideas, our dead rivers and smoky skies behind us. Or we can walk through lightly, with little luggage, ready to imagine another world. And ready to fight for it." We would like to thank all participating art practitioners for boldly joining us in this exploration of connections between Singapore and Perth. 20.01.2022 Observing the post-colonial hangover in both Perth and Singapore, Akai Chew's work for the upcoming double / take (Sea Currents x Synchronicities) exhibition ju...xtaposes picturesque paintings from the colonial era with contemporary stock images. Through the juxtaposition, a commonality arises in the romanticisation of landscapes. In colonial paintings, rose-tinted images of native lands invoke curiosity to attract political and financial patronage, validating the act of colonialism. In contemporary times, iconic landmarks are heavily edited for maximum visual impact and recognisability to fuel the rapid production and consumption of imagery. In both instances, the everyday is transformed into a spectacle, revealing an underlying colonial desire for the romanticisation of culture and history. This coming Tuesday, Akai's work will be presented alongside the work of Australian-Filipino artist Jen Datu at The Substation as part of a small cross-border arts festival developed in partnership with The Lobby, Cherish by Her, and Beinthe.SPACE. Join us for the opening on 22 September, 610pm!

11.01.2022 UPCOMING EXHIBITION | ‘Familiar Objects & Feral Arrangements’ curated by Elizabeth Smith ARTIST PROFILE | Darcy Palladino is a local emerging artist working primarily with textile dyeing, natural dyeing processes, design, and patchwork quilting. She re-uses and repurposes offcuts and scrap fabric or calico focusing on improvisation and the surprising effects that has. Over the last twelve months, Palladino has been investigating the properties of local flora as a dye sourc...e. Harvesting natural dyestuffs from the local flora, she extracts colour from the plants which are then used in dyeing her fabrics. The result is a snapshot of the local WA landscape immortalised in crafted fabric pieces. Palladino is ultimately passionate about sustainable practice and interested in anthropology and history, and the wealth of knowledge possessed by the original custodians. 08.01.2022 UPCOMING EXHIBITION | ‘double / take’ as part of the Sea Currents x Synchronicities [small] arts festival. ARTIST PROFILE | Jen Datu (1992) is a first generation Australian-Filipino working in Perth (Boorloo), Western Australia, having recently graduated in 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) from Curtin University. Datu has exhibited with Propel Youth Arts (WA), Little Wing Corner Gallery and Cool Change Contemporary in various group shows. Their practice is informed ...by personal experiences and observations that arise from social engagements. Through performance and installation Datu utilises Fluxus principals to examine the systems and superstructures that lie below the surface of the everyday, curiously questioning and reflecting upon the use of body gestures and familiar forms. More recently, Datu has begun exploring environments of employment. By uncannily reconfiguring these spaces, they prompt the viewer to question their predetermined readings of spaces and culture, and how they critically affect how we perform and interact with one another. By highlighting power dynamics that are not mutually exclusive from them, Datu reveals the interconnectedness between art, the viewer, and daily life. Jen Datu, Endless Grind. 2020. Video still.
