19.01.2022 Our history is as old as Toowoomba! The Defiance Flour Mill was founded in 1898. Upon the death of her husband in 1906, Ellen, the mother of ten children, assumed the leadership of all family businesses including Defiance Mills, which she chaired until her death in 1924. After an initial opening in Russell Street, the Mill relocated one year later to 269-291 Ruthven Street. The main flour Milling building was constructed in 1911 and still stands today as an impressive piece of turn of the century architecture by W Hodgen.
