Pop-up-stalls will be held for Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week with the education team looking forward to finding out how well our community is recycling and to provide residents with ...advice on reducing waste going to landfill. Our education team will be on hand for a friendly chat about common recycling habits, tips to improve these habits and how we can reduce our overall waste. Now in its 25th year, Planet Ark's National Recycling Week runs from Monday 9 to Sunday 15 November 2020. 14.01.2022 NINES WINNERS The last round and grand final of the Bombala Local Nines was played in Delegate on the weekend, with all eight teams involved in matches throughout the day in front of one of the biggest crowds of the season. Despite the forecast the rain stayed away for much of the day making it an exciting spectacle for the last matches of the season. The first game of the day was a close one between the ladies Dragons and Raiders, with the latter running out winners 6-4. ... Maree Coates was one of the best on ground, helping the Raiders to the win along with team mates Montana Chamberlain and Rosie Gillespie-Jones. Dragons captain Abbey Kimber named Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the game. 14.01.2022 STORM HITS Local State Emergency Service (SES) personnel had their work cut out for them over the weekend after a storm hitting Cooma and surrounds on the afternoon of Saturday November 28 resulted in 23 emergency call outs. The Storm came through at approximately 6pm, bringing heavy rain and damaging winds to Cooma and surrounding areas and resulting in trees falling down and damage to a number of structures. Cooma SES activated two teams, one for roof repairs and one for t...ree clean ups. One particular incident of a tree falling over and taking out powerlines in Doondoo Place Cooma resulted in a power outage to the North Cooma area for a time. SES crews worked through the night Saturday and continued until around 3pm Sunday. They are reminding people that when strong and damaging winds are forecast it is important to batten the hatches and make sure loose objects and materials are properly secured... 12.01.2022 The sailing season commences, despite the rain Story by Tim Symons, photos by John Byrne and Richard Churm The 2020/21 Sailing Season commenced at lake Jindabyne Sailing Club on Saturday October 31 with the running of the first heat of the 2020/21. Point-score series. Despite the rainy weather, five monohulls and five catamarans rigged up to compete in the race. John Byrne manned the start boat while Richard and Mark manned the rescue boat.... John set a Port rounding course and a start line at the Bay Mark. He sent the two fleets off together, though some of the Laser sailors expected starts for each division and so were a bit slow crossing the line, letting the cats go first. Alan Barney Davis led the cats through the start while Nic Kennedy on his Finn was the first monohull across the line. These two stayed in front as they led their separate divisions around the course. The wind grew from around 6 knots at the start to 10 to 12 knots during the race. Players came from Wagga Rules, Springwood, Western Creek, Queanbeyan, Merimbula, Tathra, Bega, Bombala, Adaminaby, Jindabyne who joined with 10 local teams in a great weekend of competitive bowls. Looking out on Saturday morning we never thought we would get a start with steady rain falling and the outloo...k was not showing much promise. After a delayed start with play commencing at 11am the players took to the greens and in a good friendly spirit played to the conditions that were on offer. By shortening the games and dodging showers we were able to complete the grading games much to the delight of the tournament organisers and a lot of friendly banter was the order of the day as teams were graded for the championship rounds on Sunday.
