24.01.2022 CASE STUDY - OSCAR THE HAEMOPHILIAC Oscar became a haemophiliac (blood not clotting correctly), after a small surgical procedure to remove some lumps in December 2018. There can be many different types of bleeding disorders in animals and in people. Oscar had a diagnosis of Thrombocytopenia, which means the number of platelets in the blood is low. In dogs this is often caused by infections, cancers, or drug reactions, but can also be an autoimmune problem or a bone marrow iss...ue. When the platelet levels are too low, then we see the appearance of bleeding from the gums or bowel and any injury can cause severe bruising. Once that begins, then the we can see anaemia from low red blood cells and at times blood transfusions may be needed. The conventional treatment for this is to start treatment with steroids. In this case Oscar was given Prednisolone by his original vet and this helped normalise his platelet levels but caused the usual side effects of eating too much and drinking to excess as well as muscle weakness. The same problem happened again in January 2020 and this time his vets treated him with a different type of immune suppressant called Azathioprine along with the high doses of Prednisolone and a strong antibiotic, however this time the levels did not return to normal and so he came to see us here at The Natural Vets. We treated Oscar with things to begin adding strength into his general system. This included some Chinese herbs, some acupuncture, and some immune stimulant mushrooms along with a powerful constitutional homeopathic medicine made from the mineral Phosphorus. Gradually we lowered the dose of his conventional drugs as he became stronger. He began bringing toys asking for play again and was friskier in general. By April 2020 he was off all those drugs and his blood values all remained normal. Next, he began getting some skin itching like he used to have. Often deeper disease will start after we suppress external problems, so we are being careful with vaccinations or drugs of any variety for Oscar so he can heal in the correct manner in the future. 20.01.2022 Introducing our newest vet Dr Kate! Country girl at heart, Dr Kate is a Veterinary Surgeon who graduated with Honours from the University of Queensland in 2012. She grew up on a beef cattle property in the bush and never adventured anywhere without at least one furry best mate by her side. Veterinary Science was her natural path, having always been drawn by its excitement, diversity and, of course, furry faces and wet noses. Dr Kate's life vision is to be the person her do...gs think she is. To live every day embracing life the way her dogs do! Upon graduating, she worked in mixed practice for three years in Australia before moving into small animal practice with a special interest in dermatology, canine behaviour, physiotherapy and nutrition. Overall Dr Kate's passion is helping create a lifestyle for pets to maximise wellbeing through preventative health. She has recently returned home to Australia after two fantastic years of working and travelling the UK and Europe. Here she gained excellent experience in soft tissue surgery and emergency care, as well as expanding her knowledge of complementary holistic therapy benefits. When not cuddling patients, you'll find Kate outdoors exploring bush tracks with her Kelpie and Border Collie, strumming the guitar, reading, SUPing, 4wding, spluttering back onto her surfboard, or stuck in an awkward yoga pose. Kate's every movement intends to tread lightly on planet earth, leaving everything a little better than she found it. The Natural Vets are a full service veterinary clinic integrating traditional western medicine with alternative therapies on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. If you would like to make an appointment with Dr Kate, or one of our other fabulous vets, please call 07 54767674 or reserve your appointment online: www.thenaturalvets.com.au/book-now See more

19.01.2022 INTRODUCING OUR HOLISTIC NURSE TRISTAN He's back! You may have heard a familiar voice on the phones lately as Nurse Tristan has returned from paternity leave. Everyones Soul Brother, Tristan has a gorgeous heart and loves to take care of everyone. A lover of all animals, Tristan was originally employed as Dr Renees Nanny and proved himself to be highly skilled at managing wild creatures (kids provide the best training ground for that!). And so, he was offered a job a...t The Natural Vets! Animals have always been a part of my life from a young age. I was forever bringing them home, or nagging my family for more. I have loved them all from the crustation to the canine, from the rat to cat, and bird and fish. One of the most beautiful experiences was recently having the opportunity to raise a native Spangled Drongo and soft releasing it. I have a strong connection with the North American wild wolves being born in the Chinese year of the dog, and love looking after all our patients here at The Natural Vets. I was attracted to working with Holistic Vets as it aligns with my core value of doing no harm. Holistic veterinary work utilises uses the same techniques and medicines that I have been using for myself and my children for many years and so I have seen how effective it can be. I have a keen interest in canine nutrition and I am currently studying a Diploma in naturopathy for animals. ~ Tristan ~ Please contact The Natural Vets today on 07 5476 7674 to discuss your pet's needs with Tristan or one of our other helpful holistic nurses. 19.01.2022 HEARTWORM NEWSFLASH. We received news this week that there have been an escalating number of dogs testing positive for heartworm infection in the Northern Brisbane region. This is dangerously close to home here on the Sunshine Coast. So if you own a dog we recommend talking to us about your heartworm prevention protocol. Why? Well, infection with heartworm is potentially fatal - it causes heart failure in dogs. Treatment involves a hospital stay, great expense, and your... dog may not survive. It doesn't require contact with other animals either - it is spread by blood-sucking mosquitoes. So it's not exactly avoidable. What are you doing to protect your dog? Many of our clients use herbal or natural protection methods which MAY NOT BE ADEQUATE when facing rising infection rates in our local population of dogs. In good news, for the month of September we are offering: * FREE HEARTWORM TESTS to check your dog's heartworm status, and a * FREE NURSE CONSULT to discuss your dog's heartworm prevention program. THIS IS A HUGE $112 SAVINGS!!! It's FREE! Let's go! You can book in for your dog's FREE heartworm check using our easy peasy new online booking system: www.thenaturalvets.com.au/book-now/ P.S. In good news, cats are generally resistant to heartworm infection. So cat owners can rest peacefully.

19.01.2022 Let's talk Heartworm Prevention Options. Many of the heartworm prevention chemicals on the market are safe for most healthy dogs, but there may be cases where chemicals are best avoided. What if you want to avoid chemicals? We do not recommend chemical preventatives for the very old, very young, or very sick. We also recommend avoiding chemicals if your pet has cancer. If you want to avoid chemicals for these or other reasons, then we can provide herbal, non-toxic alter...natives. Herbal preventatives are not as strong as chemical options. Animals on herbal protection need blood tests twice a year to monitor for infection. By testing regularly, we are more likely to pick up an infection early when it is easier to treat. Note there there are limitations with the tests and some heartworm infections can be missed. Other Protective Measures? * Keep your pets indoors when mozzies are out * Keep your house screened * Use our 'Don't Let the Bugs Bite Spritz' to reduce the likelihood of mozzie bites (added bonus - helps prevent fleas too!) https://www.thenaturalvets.com.au//dont-let-the-bugs-bite/ DON'T FORGET FREE HEARTWORM TESTS THROUGHOUT SEPTEMBER! You can book your dog's blood test to check their heartworm status using our easy online booking system. While you are here talk to our nursing staff about your dog's heartworm protection plan. https://www.thenaturalvets.com.au/book-now/ Regular monitoring with blood tests is recommended regardless of what prevention method you choose. Some heartworms are developing resistance to the chemical preventatives so regular tests are recommended for all dogs.

18.01.2022 Dr Renee didnt always know she wanted to be a Vet. She thought she might become a paramedic Chopper Pilot but somehow ended up at Vet School instead. She left vet school with high hopes of curing all her patients ailments but within her first year of graduating discovered the limitations of conventional medical training. And so, Veterinary homeopathy, Chinese herbal medicine and nutrition became her areas of expertise, as well as emergency medicine and fixing grotty mouths ...with her dental prowess. Walking the holistic veterinary path ultimately led her to open The Natural Vets with Dr Henry, where she could finally practice the veterinary care she had always dreamt of. Saving animals really does make her soul shine, and the balance of chronic curable illness, emergency cases, grotty mouths, cute puppies, and an incredibly dedicated team floats her boat every day. When not healing your pets, Dr Renee can be found trying to beat her husband at muscle-up competitions, surfing longboard waves, SUPing, hiking, singing, playing music, writing songs, chasing after her three (human) wildlings, eating delicious vegan food, and living a limitless life of adventure. 18.01.2022 CASE STUDY: SCOOBIE HEALS INOPERABLE CANCER Scoobie came to see us in January this year for treatment on his inoperable cancer of the liver, stomach, and spleen. His previous vet had begun to try and remove the masses but then during surgery, found that the liver mass had invaded across to the stomach wall and so had to abandon the operation. ... We tested his liver enzymes and they were still extremely high, indicating that the cancers were still active. We then started his treatment using homeopathic Phosphorus and regular acupuncture with some herbs and nutritional supplements. His liver enzymes quickly came back into the normal range and his energy supply improved such that he was pulling his owner on walks. Recently he had a 6 monthly ultrasound to see how things were healing. The specialist asked, Have you got the right dog? as all the internal organs are now 100% cancer free! GREAT JOB SCOOBIE! 17.01.2022 CASE STUDY: Harvey with an abscessed tumour Harvey has had a growth on his neck for a while, but it began to swell and bleed at the beginning of May 2020. It became very painful and he ended up the Pet ER where he was given Methadone. After this, the whole area became hugely inflamed and reactive. All around the growth area became thickened, hard, and painful with a discharge of yellow pus.... Harvey doesnt do that well with drugs since he went into Kidney Failure after having and an anaesthetic as a youngster. At that time he was fixed using homeopathic medicines. Because of that history we were reluctant to give an anaesthetic to clean up the reactive area. Treatment was begun with homeopathic Pyrogen and Lachesis. This medicine has often helped Harvey in the past and so is a general or constitutional medicine for him. We also used some Chinese herbs in his food and Calendula tincture in a spray on the wound itself. These medicines helped the skin dry up and a large scab formed on the top of the growth. This large piece then dropped off. We were left with a small dried out area no longer needing surgery. Since then Harvey has been feeling very well in general. Usually an abscessed tumour like this would require lots of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicines, along with extensive surgery. 14.01.2022 Emma from Maroochydore recently left us this review in regards to her Pug x Shih Tzu 'Peanut': "This is the best vets we've ever taken our dogs to. I hardly ever write reviews but it was worth it to us to spread the word of this great clinic. "Previous vets haven't been very thorough with our dogs and left out important info which made us feel in the dark - the COMPLETE opposite is true of The Natural Vets! They inform you about everything, they go through the condition... with great detail, let you know about costs, different treatment options etc and also offer alternative therapies which has been very beneficial to our pets healing. "I think the biggest thing is that this clinic takes their TIME with your animals and they truly care for animals as much as humans. We are so happy with the treatment of Peanut and will keep coming back and spreading the word on how great it is. Thank you guys! :)" ~ Emma Thank you Emma, Peanut completely won all the staff's hearts she is just the cutest little dame! So glad she is feeling better than ever now. 10.01.2022 Are you using heartworm protection? There have been growing numbers of heartworm positive dogs in the north Brisbane area. 40% of dogs tested positive for heartworm were on some type of monthly preventative. How can that be?... Well it can be easy to forget a dose, or two, or three... We do recommend using a heartworm preventative for your dog. Without one, your dog is at increasing risk of contracting heartworm disease. And if you are one of those forgetful types, the annual heartworm injection may suit you better. Many of our clients use herbal or natural protection methods which MAY NOT BE ADEQUATE when facing rising infection rates in a local population of dogs. 08.01.2022 I CANNOT BREATHE PROPERLY! Floyd first visited our surgery in September of 2019 because for the last 18 months he had suffered from inflammation of the bowel as well as choking in the throat. The conventional treatment being used for these problems was to keep him on a hypoallergenic diet and prednisolone. He was now suffering from the side effects of this drug. You may notice how Floyd has lost most of his temporal muscles making his head look very bony. This is a com...mon steroid side effect. The choking had initially been improved by surgically resecting part of his soft palate and using antibiotics but then a month later he developed a granuloma on the right side of the larynx. Floyds owners tried many different drugs but eventually his problems progressed to a grade 2 laryngeal paralysis accompanied by sleep apnoea and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We began treatment with Chinese herbs, acupuncture and homeopathic medicine and he began a gradual diet change. After 2 months the steroid dose was able to be reduced without breathing or gut problems flaring up. After 4 months his energy was improved, and he was playing more. By March 2020 he was finally off the steroids and managing OK on a better diet. Now in September there has been no more choking or throat problems and his main issue at present is some itching on his skin. It is quite common for the body when it clears deep problems to get some skin issues and this usually means we are getting towards the end of his cure. Well done Floyd! 07.01.2022 With all chronic diseases theres a plethora of causes involved. Naturally as we observe our pets, we notice some signs before the symptoms began. These are important factors, but at any point in the animals life, their strengths or weaknesses will be affected by many, many stresses or anti-stresses that have happened in their lives up until then. For example, we may have an animal that vomits each time it eats beef. Now that didnt happen years ago when it was young an...d strong. Since then, theres been a change of home, 2 vaccinations, 3 courses of anti-inflammatories for a painful leg, lots of cooked and packaged foods,1 course of antibiotics for an gut infection, an anaesthetic for an infected tooth and then a fight with the next door neighbours dog last week. To add insult to injury, the owner yelled at the animal for hopping on the lounge and the new baby pulled his tail. The weathers really cold, and he had a bath in cool water. Yesterday there was a loud thunderstorm. Now the owner came along and innocently give some pieces of beef which led to vomiting. Yes, there may well be a sensitivity to beef, but if everything was going well and the health was robust then it would probably be fine. What I am trying to illustrate is that our state of health is a product of a long, long line of pros and cons that can strengthen or weaken our achilles heel or sick tendencies. She won the 2009 Young Alumni of the Year award from the University of Queensland for this work. Her other studies included eye diseases of whales and dolphins, conservation, wildlife medicine (she ...worked in Africa with wildlife for a year in 1996 and helped run post- bushfire search, rescue and triage teams earlier in 2020), veterinary anthropology, Asian studies, buddhist studies and human animal relationships. She is finishing up her PhD thesis at the moment on the traditional veterinary medicine of Bhutan and Tibet after studying Tibetan language, medicine and buddhism and spending 20 years working in Asia. Dr Catherine has tried to retire as a vet several times and became an environmental educator, rock climbing and outdoor guide, travel guide, academic, NGO manager, consultant and author. But her deep love of healing and animals keeps bringing her back to Holistic Vet work as she is fundamentally deep down a healer. She has had an interest in integrated and herbal medicines since vet school and pursued training in veterinary acupuncture, energy medicine, herbal medicine and nutraceuticals since then. Dr Catherine has a soft spot for the oldies and is passionate about geriatric medicine and palliative care, along with dental health and a whole body/mind approach to health and healing. She loves the natural environment and all things outdoors and adventurous, especially where it concerns the ocean or mountains. She and her partner are excited to explore the recent explosion of wonderful vegan restaurants in south east Queensland and can often be found cooking a gourmet vegan BBQ on the beach in Caloundra after a kayak or swim. 03.01.2022 Why do we recommend the Haqihana harness? In this video, Dr Renee demonstrates a gentle walking technique that can be implemented by everyone. You will need to invest in a comfortable, well designed harness for your dog, such as the Haqihana harness, and a long (minimum 3m) leash. Watch the video for all our tips on making the walking experience gentle, pleasant and fun for everyone. Scientific literature reporting the damage associated with typical walking equipment used on ...dogs inspired Haqihana to propose a substitute to collars and head halters. Their non-inhibitive harness does not cause pain, friction or injury to the skin and does not limit movement in any way or create any other discomfort for your dog. The design and quality of the harness is important for your dogs comfort. There are MANY poorly-designed harnesses out there which continue to place pressure on the sensitive structures of the neck or across the shoulders, or use excess or poor quality materials that rub on the skin. Choose a harness, but choose HAQIHANA! If you are inspired to change your walking experience with your dog, we are offering a free 3m leash with any Haqihana harness purchased from our clinic or online store! https://www.thenaturalvets.com.au/product/haqihana-harness/

01.01.2022 We would like to give your pets the gift of wellness this Christmas! One of the ways we can do this is use our magic crystal ball to predict their health future. Just kidding. We may use alternative therapies but crystal balls are beyond our skill set. What we do have, however, is routine blood testing. As vets we understand why blood testing is so important for your pets: * It provides us baseline measurements when they are well * It can be an early predictor of disease... (we trend results over time) * It helps us identify silent illnesses that may be lurking beneath the surface * It helps us track chronic diseases like kidney and liver troubles * It helps us determine possible causes of illness when your pet is really unwell. So if it can provide all these benefits, why not do it routinely? You don't have to wait until your pet is unwell! From now until 31st December 2020, we will be offering your pets the gift of a crystal ball reading - in the form of a comprehensive blood test for only $99 - less than half the usual price! The test will check red and white blood cells and most organ markers so we can see how your fur baby's kidneys, liver, pancreas and other organs are travelling. All you need to do is book a convenient time here: http://vet.lc/g71d3g #christmasgift #specialoffer
