25.01.2022 Still sceptical about the use of cold water to improve your life? Here are 2 more benefits. A reduction in inflammation can help with many physical ailments and reduce pain. Try it for yourself with a cold shower, cool bath, dip in the pool or the bay. #paincontrol #inflammation #therapy #coldwater #habits #swimming #healing
25.01.2022 On Saturday afternoon we ran our first small Cold Water Immersion session. One participant is training for our Winter Rip Swim on August 15th and is focusing on breathing techniques to keep him warm throughout the crossing. The other is new to cold water and is keen to begin her journey of open water winter swimming. She did a great job overcoming the desire to jump straight out of the 11 degree pool and embraced the challenge of staying in for a full ten minutes. Both partic...ipants found the session really beneficial and left feeling motivated and energised. If you are searching for something new and have been curious about cold-water immersion and breathing, this is your chance to learn a lot in a very small group. At the moment there are 2 places available in our Saturday afternoon sessions, but we are also offering individual sessions at other times if Saturday does not suit you (subject to availability). Our Cold Water Immersion sessions will teach you how to embrace the cold water safely, and with the added elements of breathing techniques, strength and flexibility, they will significantly improve the way you function in sport and in everyday life. The sessions are suitable for swimmers and non-swimmers of all ages. Book now or read more at our website: www.ripswim.com/training
24.01.2022 If youre not feeling too keen to get IN it this winter....get ON it! Being on and around the water is still so fantastic for the body and soul. And what wonderful conditions we had in Melbourne today.
23.01.2022 Good morning swimmers. Our Winter Solstice Swim 2000m section has just reached capacity. However, given the numbers in the other distances, we can add another 10 places, but no more. There are some strong swimmers lining up so if you are keen to race, get in there! Go here: https://ripswimstore.ecwid.com... If you are new to swimming and want to test yourself in the cold water, then try the 1000m or 1500m sections as there as we still have the capacity to take a few more there. https://ripswimstore.ecwid.com
22.01.2022 At a time like this, getting on the river with the kids is such a welcome change. #kayaking #river #nature #yarrarivermelbourne #studleypark #scenic #paddling
22.01.2022 Whether you are a swimmer or not, cold water can be of great benefit. Cold water is defined as 5-15 degrees Celsius. While 5 is good for some, 15 is more appropriate for others. The cold water on your skin sends your body into overdrive. It switches on to adapt and will leave you feeling energised and revitalised and wide awake! If you cant get to a pool or the open water, simply try a minute or two in the shower. Go on, try it out and youll be surprised at the results. #coldwater #boost #energy #swimming #health #immunesupport #circulation #buzz
21.01.2022 Hi Swimmers. We trust you are all still managing to swim in the bay and are keeping safe and obeying the regulations to ensure we can all continue to swim. For those of you who have swum The Rip, and for those of you who are lined up soon, our master list may be of interest to you. We have just updated it and it includes all the swimmers we have taken across under our guidance, as well as those who swam before our project commenced.... The total now stands at 518. Of those swimmers, we have escorted 472 across. The first swimmer was Douglas Mew, in 1971 - (see picture) and the second was Barry Easthoe (Doc!) in 1990. After that there were quite a few of the Brighton Icebergers and several other smaller groups. Our project commenced in October 2014. Congratulations to all The Rip swimmers, and if you haven't done it yet, you will get your chance! Our next trip was scheduled for 16th of August with 18 brave winter swimmers, but we have had to postpone that due to Covid restrictions. Hopefully we will get a chance to execute the crossing on August 22. We will then announce dates for the 2021 season by the end of August. Go here to see the master list: https://www.ripswim.com.au/honour-board
21.01.2022 Today we ran the first qualifying swim for the winter Rip crossing on August 15th. 7 brave swimmers without wetsuits took part - all with varying levels of ability and experience. 5 of them qualified by swimming for 75 minutes and the other two were very close having managed a full hour of swimming. Congratulations to all of them! As always, a BIG thanks to our crew who kept our swimmers safe both in and out and of the water. Our next qualifying swimming session is June 6th at Williamstown and details are on our website at www.ripswim.com.au
20.01.2022 Well done to the brave swimmers who came along to enjoy a Winter Solstice Swim today. Some had a race while others simply looked at their swim as a great challenge in cool water (11 degrees celsius). We were due to run a major event today at St Kilda (extension of our original Solstice Event) but this smaller swim was a lovely substitute! Mother nature was in fine form and swimmers of all ages revelled in the sunny, calm conditions. A special mention to our young teenage swim...mers who all swam 2km! Thanks to all of you who took part, and a big Pagan pat on the back (Covid conscious of course!) to our land and water safety crew. Results will be emailed to the swimmers tonight.

Sessions will run on Saturday afternoons (2-3pm) and and there will just be... 3 people per session so you'll get plenty of attention. Take a minute to watch the video and book or read more at our website: www.ripswim.com.au/training.
17.01.2022 Hi swimmers, great to see you entering the Winter Solstice Swim for this Saturday at Williamstown! We are almost at capacity - particularly for the 2000m event, so if you are keen you will need to enter today. We wil...l be closing entries on Wednesday evening, unless they already fill today or tomorrow. Please note that we cannot allow ANY entries on the day. 16.01.2022 Cold water changes your physiological chemistry. Increases in dopamine help you feel happier and decreases in Cortisol reduce stress. Try it out for yourself. #mentalhealthawareness #dopamine #cortisol #happiness #contentment #openwaterswimming #water #cold #coldwatertherapy
16.01.2022 Yesterday another 3 swimmers qualified for our August 15 Winter Rip Swim. They did a magnificent job and covered 4km in around 90 minutes - with a few stops to check in with their kayaker to make sure they were safe. What an effort! They werent even slurring their words at the end. The water temperature was between 11 and 11.8 degrees. Congratulations to the three of them - Nigel Williams, Kirsty Tweddle and Paul Lock. ... We now have 11 swimmers who have qualified officially and about 5 more planning to do so in the next week or two. We can take a total of 20, so if you are keen then make sure you get in touch very soon! You can send us a track of a recent swim, or standby for another exciting opportunity in 2 weeks where you will have a chance to show us your ability in the cold water. We hope you are all loving your winter swimming, whether you are racing or cruising, dashing or dipping, naked or suited - stay safe and have fun!!!
16.01.2022 While it is obviously disappointing that we are back in lockdown, you can still swim in the bay, so there is an opportunity here to try something new. The water is cold but it doesnt mean you cant adapt and you never know, you may love it! Take the example of one of our swimmers lined up to swim The Rip without a wetsuit in August. He did his first season of winter swimming last year in a full wetsuit and a neoprene cap. Fast forward to this season, and he is swimming for... an hour without a wetsuit in sub 11 degree water and emerging looking very comfortable! So, if you are disappointed about the pools shutting and worried about how to embrace the cold water in Port Phillip, get in touch. We can help you with a private session at the bay where you will get all the advice, support and motivation you need to enjoy open water swimming right now ! We can still take up to two people in a session in accordance with current regulations. Get in touch with us for further details and to book a session at a time that suits.
16.01.2022 Hi swimmers. Just a short note to let you know that our first qualifying event (may 30) for the winter Rip Swim is now full but we will be holding another one on June 6. The bookings for that are on our website ripswim.com.au. These qualifying swims are essential for anyone wanting to take on our Winter Rip Swim on August 15. Keep safe, keep swimming!
15.01.2022 What a rewarding time to be working with cold water enthusiasts! Yesterday we ran one of our private pool sessions (now 10 degrees celsius), where we worked on powerful breathing techniques and adaption to cold water. No matter where you are in your cold water journey (even if you haven't yet started!) we can teach and inspire you. If you are not a swimmer, you can still derive great benefits from the cold water and the breathing techniques that you'll learn with us. These ...techniques can be used whenever you want to boost your energy, focus, calm your mind and improve your overall wellbeing. Our Cold Water Immersion sessions give you the confidence to understand how cold water affects your body and how you can adapt, begin to really enjoy it and gain the full benefits from it. Then, if you love the open water, we can help you with the next part of your journey! We run various training sessions and events at Williamstown, Elwood and South Melbourne beaches (and of course across The Mighty Rip!) where you can test your limits with the cold water under the watchful eye of our experienced crew. 11.01.2022 We are excited to announce a new program that aims to bring you more energy, strength and focus. We are calling these the Cold Water Immersion sessions as that is one of the key elements. We will teach you how to embrace the cold and gain the full benefits from this pursuit. The other elements we will work on are breathing, strength and flexibility. These sessions are designed for swimmers and non-swimmers alike. We believe they can be of great benefit to anyone looking for ...a way to improve their overall wellbeing. 10.01.2022 Hi swimmers, some of you will have done our original Winter Solstice Swim that used to run in the dark! We were intending to deliver a bigger event at St Kilda this year, but due to Covid 19 we had to cancel it. Instead, we have decided to run a smaller event during the morning, at Williamstown beach, on Saturday the 20th of June. This will be an opportunity to celebrate the Winter Solstice Pagan festival and have an opportunity to test yourself in the cold water. As always,... we will have our full land and water-safety crew to keep you safe. We will have a hot drink waiting for you after you exit the water too. There are 3 distances that you can choose (500/1000/1500) and whether you swim in a wetsuit or without, you are more than welcome!! Everyone will get timed for their swim and receive an achievement certificate via email after the event. If you are missing your racing in the open-water, this is a great opportunity to test yourself. We will need to restrict our numbers to comply with current regulations, so if you are keen, make sure you enter soon. We look forward to seeing you on the beach to celebrate the return to open-water swimming events. ENTER HERE: https://ripswimstore.ecwid.com
06.01.2022 And here are the results from the 2000m swim. Given the small field, we decided not to split the results into wetsuits and clean-skins. For those wondering, wetsuits give an advantage of about 40 - 70 seconds per km. Regardless, a great swim by all!!
05.01.2022 Hi swimmers, hope you all had a wonderful weekend of swimming and other activities. We now have several swimmers who have officially qualified for the exciting Winter Rip Swim on the 15th of August - well done to them all. There is another swim planned (9-11am) this Saturday at Williamstown for those keen to qualify, but we also welcome swimmers who just want to test their limits in the cold, in a safe environment.... We will have 2 kayakers on the water again and land crew to help you at the end of your swim. Even though all of our swimmers did an amazing job completing the 60-75 minute swim, some of them needed additional help getting warm and back to normal afterwards. We have a thorough approach to ensuring you are fully recovered before you go home. If you are keen to join in to see where you are at with your cold-water tolerance, book in with the 'Book Now' button right here on our page! Safe swimming.
04.01.2022 Today was the day that 18 brave swimmers would have swum across The Rip - sans wetsuits. They all trained hard and swam regularly with their team mates. They were ready for the challenge. It is disappointing that they did not have their chance, but their time will come. To our swimmers, and to all of you who have missed out on substantial goals that you have worked hard for, we wish you all the best and encourage you to stay focussed, positive and have patience. "Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure (or in this case, bad luck!) than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat." (Theodore Roosevelt).
04.01.2022 Hi swimmers. There is 1 place left in each of the events for this Saturday (1000m, 1500m & 2000m) at Williamstown. For those of you who have already entered, please note that an email will be sent to you by tomorrow morning with all event information, including check-in and start times and safety and course information. See you on the weekend for some Winter Solstice swimming and racing!... Embrace the cold!
04.01.2022 Hi water lovers. With Melbourne's pools, playgrounds and many parks and nature spots closed at the moment, our beautiful and serene waterways create a wonderful opportunity for escape, exercise and fun. So we have put together a kayaking offer! Children can come along too, so you may find this a welcome break from homeschooling! We have chosen two locations - Melbourne CBD (Yarra River) and Williamstown. Both locations will give you a chance to enjoy wonderful views and exper...iences that you cannot get from the land. See the bridges and buildings in the city or the boats, yachts and ships over at Williamstown. Click here to book in: https://ripswimstore.ecwid.com
03.01.2022 For those of you who are interested in The Rip Swim but have not managed to do the crossing yet, this documentary gives you a thorough understanding of what it is all about. It includes information about the dangers and history of The Rip and the way in which our project was set up. Ted Baillieu features as he has swum it several times, and there is a wonderful story about his great grandfather and the manner in which he took on the treacherous body of water, and then went on... to establish a family on the Bellarine. The first swimmer on record was Doug Mew (1971), then Barry Easthoe (1990) and there about 46 other swimmers who swam it before we launched our project. All of them are on our website. Our crossing began in 2014 and we have now taken 472 swimmers across safely, bringing the grand total to 520. This includes 8 swimmers who have completed the crossing in winter, without a wetsuit (including the original swimmer Doug). We currently have 18 swimmers who are ready to take on the winter crossing if the restrictions are lifted in time! All of our fingers (and toes!) are crossed for this to happen! In the meantime, stay safe, keep swimming and keep positive. Enjoy the video! The Documentary features our first race which took place in 2015. The winners were Sam Sheppard and Naantali Marshall. It was a very exciting race. We then kept running the smaller crossings, until we ran our 2nd race in 2018. That day was our biggest challenge as 40 took part in a race and 100 crossed in teams all at the same time!! Since then we have maintained our small team format (5/6 swimmers with their own kayaker) to recapture the essence of the project, which, essentially, is an unforgettable open-water adventure, shared with friends. For those of you who like to race, there are plans to bring back another race in the next few years, so keep training if you think you can become the next King or Queen of The Rip!
03.01.2022 For those of you who swam yesterday, here are the results from the 1000 an 1500m swims. Well done to all of you!
02.01.2022 Due to ongoing restrictions, we have had to postpone our intended Winter Rip swim this year. It is very disappointing for the 18 swimmers who have trained very hard to do this extreme swim without wetsuits. So, we want to reach out to them and all the other swimmers who have missed out on goals they have been working towards. Remember that when you finally get to do your swim, the experience will be even sweeter! For now, keep your spirits up, stay safe and stay focussed on the wonderful things to come when we put this virus behind us.
01.01.2022 Many people have heard of Wim Hof. If you haven't, this will give you a great insight into the man. And if you have, this will still be great to watch as it covers many aspects of his life, including some of his 'backstory'. Make sure you watch the whole thing because it shows not only what he has done, but WHO HE IS and what he BELIEVES IN. While some pope may focus on his extreme activities, you will derive greater benefit from his philosophy and his methods as you may be ...able to incorporate some of these into your life. He has done things that defy science and so some say he is a freak, but that is not true. He has spent many hours training his body and his mind. And now, science is showing that we can do the same. This is exciting to consider - especially given the current state of the world with regard to disease, stress and other negative factors. Take a few minutes to watch this piece and see whether or not you may benefit from some of it. Like all things, nothing great is easy, but all you need to do is start. Go on, DO IT!! You will be inspired!! https://www.youtube.com/watch
01.01.2022 Hey swimmers, happy Friday to you all. It's a wonderful day and we hope it continues into the weekend. For those of you who may be looking for an open-water swimming session where you can test your cold-water limits safely, we will be back at Williamstown Beach again tomorrow morning from 9-11. You are welcome to join us but you must book so we know our numbers for your safety. This is an opportunity for you to either try and qualify for our Winter Rip Swim (75 minute swim wi...thout a wetsuit) or just come and see what your cold water tolerance is like under expert supervision. We will have a kayaker on the water with you and someone on land to look after your gear. Book here: https://ripswimstore.ecwid.com/Cold-Water-Swim-Assessment-J
