25.01.2022 This week, some of our retail trainees packed their bags and headed over to @WeWork for a field trip with our Retail Trainer Nat They were taken on a tour around each of the different buildings, got to meet some current members, be inspired through learning about their businesses and got to live a day in the life of a community associate by shadowing one for the day ! The trainees got an in-depth look behind the scenes, learning more about WeWork systems such as how to boo...k meetings, how to take mail for the customers and how to welcome new businesses and how to add that human touch that is oh-so important for amazing customer service Finally, the retail trainees wrapped the day up by putting some of the skills they've learned in the Retail Training Program to use in mock interviews conducted by WeWork staff ! What an awesome day of learning we want to say a HUGE thank you to WeWork and all of the WeWork staff that made the day so memorable and offered so much of their time and expertise ! #socent #ethicallymade #madeethically #Wework #supportlocalsydney

25.01.2022 You might remember we made a call-out to young, emerging artists from a refugee and new migrant background to collaborate on our community print for our new Spring Summer collection. Well, our calls were met with some incredibly talented and skilled artists ! Collaboration remains at the heart of everything we do, which is why were absolutely stoked to be able to share this process video to give you a glimpse into the Collaborative Fashion Print Masterclass we ran a...t our studio in Newtown ! The 5 young emerging artists from refugee and migrant backgrounds, @raneenshamon @dorcas_tang @gordita0819 @shaqaeqrezai & @shainuca gathered to work with visual artist @clementineamelia to develop a collaborative textile print for The Social Outfit. Inspired by the themes of heirloom and family tradition the group experimented with textiles, paints and mixed media to share their stories and memories through art. And because the workshop was an "Earn and Learn" initiative, the participating artists received a work experience fee for their creative contributions ! There was painting, collaging, sewing and storytelling abound , and we cant wait to show you the results in our new Spring/Summer collection - stay tuned and watch this space! . . . #socent #thesocialoutfit #bettertogether #artistcommunity #emergingartists #emergingdesigners #paidworkexperience #madeethically #ethicallymade #processvideo #sustainablefashion #fashionforgood #ecofashion #fashionwithaconscience #printsandpatterns See more

24.01.2022 We know youve been waiting for them - were excited to announce that we are re-stocking our 3-Layer B1-G1 (Buy One-Give One) Face Masks on our online store ! In order to keep up with demand, we will be re-stocking our 3-Layer B1-G1 Face Masks on our online store each Sunday morning at 10AM - once theyre sold out, theyre out for the week so make sure to get in quick ! As theyre made out of remnant fabric that has been diverted from landfill , the patterns and print...s on the masks will differ each week. Well update the product page with the new mask images, however please note that it is a lucky dip and the images shown are a gallery of the remnant fabrics that we are using currently to produce our face masks, there is no option to select specific prints due to the nature of the remnant fabric we use. Weve developed our new 3-Layer B1-G1 Face Masks to adhere to the guidelines around reusable cloth masks (from WHO, NSW Heath Dep. and VIC Health Dept.) But going from 2 to 3 layers means increased costs relating to fabric, production time and shipping. While weve done our best to absorb as much of the additional cost as possible, the price of the masks has had to increase slightly, we appreciate your understanding ! Tag someone below who is looking for a reusable face mask! #socent #sustainablefashion #remnantfabric #madelocal #newtown #facemask

24.01.2022 Whether its fashion or interior design, fabric swatches are an oft-overlooked waste product. Often many fabric swatches get thrown out once theyre no longer in vogue or the fabric supplier no longer makes or has availability for that fabric, which contributes to the ever-growing landfill refuse . Enter our Seneca Foldover Purse. Each purse is made using an upholstery swatch generously donated by Seneca Textiles Australia, an industry partner were working with to redu...ce textile waste. Think gorgeously textured fabrics spliced together in our unique foldover design and lined with a variety of donated remnant fabrics ! Due to the incredibly unique nature of these purses, we can only offer them in-store . No two are exactly the same, so come down to our shop in Newtown and find yours today - were open Wednesday - Saturday #madelocal #newtown #shoplocal #ethicallymade #sustainable

24.01.2022 What does B1-G1 mean anyway ? Our B1-G1 Face Mask initiative ensures that for each mask purchased, one also goes to someone in need through the help of our charity partners , like Two Good Co., an organisation that distributes meals to those in need and has been working to feed and support domestic violence supporters through its eat one, treat one initiative since 2015 . Alongside their donated meals, Two Good Co has been distributing the donated B1-G1 Face Masks to wo...mens shelters across Sydney and NSW including Wirrawee Aboriginal Womens Refuge, Blacktown Womens Refuge, The Marian Centre, Katoomba Womens Refuge and Bonnies Support Services . Holly* a recipient of one of our B1G1 masks said "I normally dont like to wear masks, but this one is so comfortable and beautiful... I love it!" Weve currently sold out of our B1-G1 Face Masks online, but were working hard to restock them on our website. In the meantime, we are stocking them in-store at our shop in Newtown, click here to see our opening hours: https://thesocialoutfit.org/pages/contact Holly* has had her name changed to ensure her privacy.

23.01.2022 An update on B1-G1 Face Mask orders ! We are working as hard as we can to produce and manufacture B1-G1 Face Masks to fulfil all online orders ! Due to this increase in demand, there will be a 5-7 business day delay on orders being shipped out, from the time of purchase. 22.01.2022 To celebrate the amazing efforts of the women involved in the "Strong and Kind" Tote Program, we have made a video to share some behind the scenes stories (including how we made the leap from a face to face manufacturing program to online craft classes and back again) and what it has meant to the refugee and new migrant women who participated. The program is a collaboration between Sydney Womens Fund and Ginger & Smart and The Social Outfit whereby women from our refugee... and new migrant community learned how to manufacture a beautiful tote bag designed by Genevieve Smart using remnant fabrics. During Covid-19 lockdowns, the program was paused and we entered into 10 weeks of online craft classes to keep connected, support one anothers wellbeing, and learn new skills such as crochet, patchwork and... importantly.... how to make a face-mask . We are now super excited to share that with the new skills these women acquired, making face-masks in lock-down, we have been able to transition some of them into ongoing employment!! Welcome to the team Han, Khalida and MunMun - we love your dedication, positive attitude and community spirit and we could not be happier to welcome you to the TSO family!! Watch the video to hear directly from our new team members Han, Khalida, Mun Mun and more! If youre just as excited as us, hop onto our website and check out our Giving Circle at https://thesocialoutfit.org/pages/donate where you can support us to run programs like this in the future! #thesocialoutfit #newtown #socent #sustainablefashion #ethicalfashion #ethicallymade

22.01.2022 Its not every day that you get a visit from Lord Mayor Clover Moore ! We are so grateful for the support of City of Sydney via their Covid-19 Community Response Grant which has allowed us to weather the storm and adapt during these challenging times, to support our community and to establish accessible online community learning programs for refugee and new migrant women, such as our sewing and craft school which was transitioned online and our retail training program .... Lord Mayor Clover Moore visited the store and got to see our retail space and workroom in action, meet some of our team (including some of the women who were involved as part of those online community learning programs) and even did a spot of shopping - our Ocean Plaid Anorak which looked absolutely fabulous on her ! 12.01.2022 The podcast series ‘Temporary’, developed by the UNSW Centre for Ideas and Guardian Australia tells the stories of six refugees and asylum seekers as intimate examples of the 30,000 people caught in legal limbo under Australia’s ‘stop the boats’ campaign. As a not-for-profit social enterprise that exists to welcome, support and nurture refugee and new migrant individuals, we understand how important and affirming it is to be given a voice, to be listened to and to be able ...to tell your story. In particular, part 7 features our very own Hani Abdile, who recounts her own story and her journey into hope through writing and poetry. 09.01.2022 Our workroom has seen an interesting year. At certain points, Joss (our brilliant production manager) could be seen wielding a circular saw and gliding through layers of donated fabric - but there was a good reason for the hustle and bustle . At the height of the pandemic in Australia, there were many that did not have the choice to work from home or to avoid public transport - and while other fashion businesses were pivoting to mask production, the thought of profiting off... of the situation left us feeling uncomfortable, to say the least . It was then that we developed the B1-G1 initiative. For each mask sold we decided we would donate one to someone in need. We've now donated 3000 of our B1-G1 Face Masks to individuals from vulnerable communities . There are so many people to thank, from charity partners that helped us distribute masks, to our industry partners that donated fabric which allowed us to make masks from off-cuts and remnant fabric . But first and foremost, we want to thank YOU! Each and every one of you who Every customer who purchased a mask (or five!) - whether in-store or online, if you liked our posts, shared our posts, or posted your own fabulous pic rocking our masks - it's only through your generosity that we have been able to achieve such an incredible result with our B1-G1 program. So, once again, THANK YOU. Read more about the program and the journey we've been on since the beginning of the year at https://thesocialoutfit.org//you-heard-right-over-2000-b1-! #socent #refugeecommunity #newtownsydney #sydney #ethicallymade

09.01.2022 Maia lighting up the street in our Gunjan Aylawadi Remix Shell Top and Batwing Jacket ! We collaborated with Indian-born Sydney Artist @gunjanay to create an incredible artwork that we then turned into a digital print for our 2019 collection, Kinetic Bloom. This season weve remixed the original print and updated it in a joyful orange - perfect for layering under a blazer in our Shell Top silhouette or as a statement piece in our Batwing Jacket silhouette . The ar...twork sparks dialogue on the often culturally circumvented topics of natural human reproduction and childbirth - and finds a way to meditate on the pain through geometry and repetition .
