23.01.2022 The nerve is one long cell, if you don't treat the whole path of the nerve you are missing a big piece of the puzzle. Pain is rarely ever caused at the location it presents in. Look beyond the location of pain , think beyond the structure , treat the whole person . This picture is an electro-acupuncture treatment for a shoulder issue. A shoulder issue is a neck issue and vice versa because all the nerves that control the upper limbs come from the neck. 22.01.2022 Active April Week 2 How did everyone do last week? Ready for this week? Key Thing to remember here and one of my mantras from one my mentors, Julie Wiebe, Blow before you go - help activate your deep core system by breathing throughout the movement. Use your breath to help you move with control.... Your full range isnt someone elses full range, notice how I might not be lifting as high or going as low as you would think, its because Im noticing that if I go any further I will lose my form (keep an eye out!). Lunges : 10 reps on each side Bridges: 10-15 reps Side Plank: 30 sec hold each side ** start on the knees, Ive shown the progression of side plank on the toes for later in the week or coming weeks Tricep dips: 10-12 reps Single Leg Balance: 30-60 sec each leg (aim to do some parts of it with your eyes closed) Do 1 set of each exercise, cycle through the exercises 3-5 times. 21.01.2022 Its a sad realization but not a surprising one. Movement heals! Why arent we doing more of it?!? How are you staying active especially as winter approaches and hibernation takes into effect? 16.01.2022 The intricate neurovascular network of the neck and shoulder. Is it any wonder that the majority of people complain about soreness and pain in the area? Our lives are spent shrugged over computers or our phones, carrying bags over our shoulders way heavier than necessary and rarely spending time using the full capacity of our available neck and shoulder movement . . . What does this mean? Stiffening and thickening of our connective tissue, decreased circulation and an irritat...ed nervous system --> pain, headaches, jaw dysfunction, shoulder, neck and upper back pain, tingling down the arm (TOS, carpel tunnel syndrome)...the list goes on . . What can you do to combat this and prevent injury to this very intricate area? . 1. MOVE - every day, look around you, reach your arms above your head, do arm circles, find a way to sweat/get your blood pumping . . . 2. POSTURE - what you do most of the day is what will contribute to those seemingly "came out of nowhere" injuries - so sit up tall in front of your computer, don't hang your head down when you are looking at your tablet or phone . . . 3. NUTRITION + HYDRATION: thirst is a delayed signal of dehydration. If you feel thirsty that means your cells are even more thirsty, which can lead to an increased perception of pain. And stay on top of your protein, good fats and carb consumption. Not all macros are created equal so consider the micronutrients within those macros. The higher the quality of protein and fats and the more veggies you eat the happier your system will be. 16.01.2022 The Canadian Contemporary Acupuncture Association is the professional body for multidisciplinary non-TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) acupuncture practitioners - it represents physios, chiros, RMTs, etc who perform acupuncture/dry needling as part of their practice. 10.01.2022 New week, new workout! Working more postural stabilizers, your focus is to maintain a neutral spine throughout the movements. 1. Clamshells Keep hips square forward and waist lifted off the floor (think top hip away from head)... 2. Scapular Sets A lifts T Lifts Squeeze shoulder blades together with each lift. Start with just moving the shoulder blades then bring in the arms 3. Ws Adding some rotator cuff action with the same movement as exercise 2 4. Fire Hydrants Alternating with Donkey Kicks Spinal stability with lower leg movement. The key here is to not let you body shift toward the bottom leg OR leg your hips rotate. I should be able to balance a tray of champagne glasses on your back (it would be a shame to let that drop!) Remember your breath with movement (Blow before you go!) and aim is for 5-12 repetitions of each, up to 3 sets. The purpose of these exercises are to activate our stabilizers so think QUALITY over quantity. Its OK if you have to stop after each rep to reset, or feel tired after 5 reps. Think about the movement as you do it, breathe through it and do it DAILY to see improvements in both the quality and quantity

09.01.2022 Lets progress from last week shall we? The goal is the same, to activate and stabilize. Watch the video for form. Remember quality over quantity! Goal: 5-10 reps of each, up to 3 sets Reminder: Blow before you go! (aka breathe through movement and do not hold your breath, ever!)... 1. Side Leg Raise (with or without band) Keep hips square forward and a small space between your waist and the floor 2. Side Plank Clam (with or without band) Stay on forearm and knees for this one and try to keep your hips square and level while you clam (harder than it looks!) Too much for the bod? Get back to the regular clams and keep building strength there 3. W Press Same w as last week but adding a shoulder press, keep the elbows high throughout the movement 4. Single Leg Squat Small movement here! Make sure your knee stays between your first and second toe and does not pass forward over your toes Notice Im near the wall for balance support and checking my form in the video (yes this is a video made in selfie mode on my ipad...I do what I can). Takeaway is... its OK to do this in front of a mirror to make sure you are keeping good posture! Exhale with movement 5, Single Leg Deadlifts Harder than it looks! Call this one a bonus for the keeners, keep a soft bend in your knee, relax your toes and hinge forward at your hips Only tip down as far as you can maintain a level spine and even hips Exhale with movement
