25.01.2022 Some helpful hints for fussy eaters!

20.01.2022 ATTENTION: PARENTS OF KIDS WITH APPLE PRODUCTS Whenever we do a parent presentation, we have at least one or two parents explain how frustrating it is to keep u...p with and on top of the changes within technology and social media. It’s very fast-paced and to some, it is very confusing. To quote one parent from this week, ‘it feels impossible to know everything and make sure my kids are safe’. But that is why we are here and do what we do. We are in front of kids every day who want to talk about the different apps and games they play, we are constantly researching, exploring, investigating to share with parents what to watch and what to keep an eye on. You don’t have to do all the work because we will do it for you. Recently Apple updated their IOS system to version 14.5 (although the previous update 14.4.2 also had this update) which has brought a new little update that parents of Apple products should be aware of. If you or your children haven’t done an update recently then this feature may not be available to the device yet. Apple has enabled within the ‘edit home screen’ function for additional screens/pages to be hidden from the main home screen. Meaning that when you hide the screens/pages, the only screen visible is the first screen or the screen/page you want to be shown when you unlock the phone. Why this may cause some issues for parents? If you are a hands-on parent monitoring your child or teenager’s online usage and keeping an eye on what is going on with their devices then there is definitely potential for them to hide something you may not agree with or approve of. But it is a very simple thing to check and fix. Step 1. Hold down finger over an icon until the ‘edit home screen’ menu pops up. Step 2. Click on edit home screen. The menu will disappear and all the icons on the iPhone will be jiggling or dancing. Step 3. Tap on the slide icon for your home screen. It looks like a grey shape with round dots in it depending on how many screen/pages are on currently shown the phone. (Located below your apps and above the bottom bar of the iPhone or device.) Step 4. You should now have an edit pages screen with a reduced image of all the pages on the phone. They will have a tick/check underneath them in a circle if all are shown and an empty circle if not. To ensure that all pages/screens are shown check/tick them all and click done on the top right corner. Step 5. Click on a spot anywhere on the screen and the home screen/page will stop jiggling and can now be used. Please also check the screenshots and screen recording to help you navigate through checking this feature on your own phone or your child’s phone/devices. 17.01.2022 One thing you may notice about the art work your child brings home from kindy, is that it looks like it has been made by a child! An integral part of our programming is allow the children in our care the expression to see where their creativity takes them.

16.01.2022 Let’s get loud! Our educators got involved in wearing their loud shirts today to raise awareness of the wonderful work the shepherd centre do in helping children with hearing loss. This is a cause close to our hearts as we support a child with a cochlear implant within our service. It was great to see all the children in their loud shirts too!

16.01.2022 This is particularly for our families with older children. Regarding the extremely disturbing video that has infiltrated social media this week. How to have a conversation with your kids who have seen, or even just heard about, this video. Dr Coulson advises us to - get curious not furious, and understand not report any. And guide a conversation where our children will feel empathy.... The four steps of doing this are - 1) ask questions (curious not furious) 2) remind them of this persons humanity. They were in a lot of pain but there are always other options 3) make sure your child is on 4) have an open discussion about to steps going forward to avoid this kind of content

13.01.2022 Just a reminder that tonight is our ‘SCHOOL READINESS INFORMATION EVENING’ - a night of information for parents of our graduating class, and parents of younger students looking to get their heads around that next stage. Held at our Ruby Road centre at 5.30 pm, this session is open to parents of both our centres. See you soon!

13.01.2022 Today our ‘Wallabies’ at our Ruby Road centre had a wonderful sensory experience with shaving cream. The use of shaving cream in our play serves a number of purposes - Builds connections within the brain Promotes exploration of scientific processes such as trial and error, cause and effect and experimentation in a literal hands on way... Strengthens fine motor skills including finger isolation, wrist rotation, etc Promotes language development Just to name a few. And in this case, the children decided that an added benefit was making their educator Mary Lou look absolutely lovely with her shaving cream beard. We love this photo so much. It truly showcases the Tom Thumb experience- our activities and program is considered, and educational, it can be a little messy, our educators are truly involved in the process, led by the children, and above all, lots and lots of fun.
