12.01.2022 Shark sightings on two Illawarra beaches this morning. First shark sighting at McCauleys beach at 06:45 hours , resulting in a number of surfers exiting the wat...er, followed by another sighting at a Austinmer beach. The shark was threshing about in the water chasing baitfish at 0:705 hours this morning. Surf Life Saving advice - if you see diving birds and baitfish around, sharks may be present- leave the water immediately. Always keep a eye out for any marine animals out there. 04.01.2022 Warm sunny conditions and large crowds visiting beaches kept volunteer lifesavers busy throughout the day. Incidents - 1. Windang - Surf Lifesaving Illawarra S...upport Operation Crew on a Jetski (RWC) noticed a private Jetski , capsize by a wave near the entrance at Windang break wall throwing 3 people into the water. The lifesaver on the Jetski quickly rescued 2 persons from the water and returned them to shore safely, before returning to the 3rd person whom was able to roll the Jetski over and restart. 2. Bulli beach - Future lifesavers in training for their Bronze Medallion, witness an unfolding drama with a male calling for help after been caught in a rip current, 150 metres from the flagged area. The male was rescued on a rescue board and returned to waiting lifesavers on the beach before first aid and oxygen therapy was administered. NSW Ambulance was called and treated the person. 3. Bulli beach - A few minutes later another drama was unfolding with a female caught in another rip current, at the southern end of Bulli beach which was also an unpatrolled location. A member of the public assisted the female prior to responding lifesaver on a Jetski (RWC) and lifesavers from Woonona & Bulli SLSC’s on ATV’s. Other assets including Surf Life Illawarra Duty Officer and Wollongong Council Lifeguard Supervisor attended the incident. Woonona lifesavers provided first aid and oxygen therapy was administered, before been transported in the Lifeguard ATV to waiting Ambulance crews at Bulli surfclub. 4. Woonona beach - Woonona lifesavers assisted a female after experiencing difficulties in the water. Lifesavers provided first aid and oxygen therapy was administered prior to NSW Ambulance attending.Surf Lifesaving Duty Officer also attended incident. Incidents like today highlights the importance to only swim at patrolled beaches between the red and yellow flags. Not for the quick response from lifesavers , incidents like this can have tragic outcome for individuals in the surf/water environment. Rescues recorded at Bulli - Woonona - Fairy Meadow and Windang Thanks to the extraordinary work by volunteer lifesavers today and assistance from Wollongong Council Lifeguard Supervisor. #slsillawarra - Surf Life Saving Illawarra
