24.01.2022 A quick progress video of any under painting I've been working on over the last 3 days. I'm experimenting with a mid tone background vs white gessoed canvas. Its helped gauge the tones of the grisaille under #painting. #grisaille is a technique used by the old masters where the painting is blocked in first as a monotone. 18.01.2022 #artoberflowers Day 3: Iris (catchup). Looks like I'm on a roll. I'm going to see how many flowers I can put together on the one sheet as I'm trialing a cold press paper from #fabrianoartistico . I usually do #botanicalillustrations on hot press paper so its all a bit experimental. I'm challenging myself to do these illustrations a little quicker and looser so I can get away from being so 'perfect' with the realism. I've been stuck in a rut for months now and hope the sponta...neity of just playing with my paints might help me get my mojo back. My aim is to get something down on paper, no matter how small or imperfect. To get the enjoyment back like I did as a kid. 09.01.2022 What a buzz it was to join a watercolour class on painting native Australian birds last Friday night. @rebeccaprinceartist is a marvelous teacher and this self taught old duck really enjoyed the first of what will be four classes. What a joy it was to have time out playing with different tools and watercolour paper and seeing how others do things. I'm looking forward to working in a looser style than the highly detailed and realistic botanical work using different techniques.... Being quite isolated it was so nice to relax into playing with paint and zone out while drawing with others of like mind. 07.01.2022 I took some time off work today to recharge. It's been such a long time since I've done any artwork, which is a sign that I'm heading into burnout. Covid has impacted everyone differently. In our case work is busier than ever and running your own small family business has its challenges. Well I decided to go back to basics and learn something new. #digitalart is becoming more often used so I spent some time investigating apps. Then I went back to basics of doing a quick life ...study. I should have known better than to attempt a live model as she moved soon after I started. I wasn't after realism so much as just capturing her pose. So three things achieved today: 1. Downtime 2. I learnt a new skill 3.
