20.01.2022 Happy Healthy Art Making Presented by Arts Centre Melbourne and UMSU Southbank Happy Healthy Art Making will be presented by a speaker from the Arts Wellbeing Collective (arts centre Melb). Attendees will learn about how to get motivated and stay mindful and resilient when making art especially in our new apocalyptic digital art making age. They will discuss ways to engage in a creative practice that is sustainable for the artist and won’t lead to burnout.... This is the first of hopefully many a free workshops presented by the UMSU Southbank Department and the Arts Centre designed to help artists upskill and learn more about their craft, how to find meaningful ways to take a breath, and how one might take action on bettering the arts industry. These workshops will help student artists continue making and creating even in isolation and help ready them for the art world outside of uni. When: Thursday 19 November, 1:30pm-2:45pm Cost: Free Where: Zoom (of course) *Link sent out shortly,

20.01.2022 Big changes are coming to the way higher education is funded in this country. These changes are going to negatively impact on the equalising effect of higher education on the Australian community. UMSU Southbank office-bearers were directed to write to members of the Senate Cross-bench who will need to vote against the bill to stop its passage through the Senate. You can too, email: [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected] and te...ll them why you think they should vote against raising higher education fees. Now is the time to aim high and to protect higher education in Australia.

17.01.2022 On Thursday last week, June 11, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne said, in an email to all staff, that because staff had voted against a pay cut COVID-19 would lead to "inevitable workforce reductions." This is despite the fact that "Melbourne is in a comparatively strong financial position with sufficient available cash and investments to cover all the potential fee losses for 2020" (Marshman & Larkins, 2020: 14). Hasan Minhaj covers US instances of University students fighting for fee remission in the wake of COVID-19.

10.01.2022 Hello all, grant writing workshop has been moved to Wednesday hope to see you all there . Cheers

10.01.2022 This is an attack on critique. Degrees that teach critical thinking are doubling in price. A future without critical thought is not a future that reflects shared values. Students at the VCA and MCM have made it clear they want a future built on honesty, on fairness and on justice. The University and the Government have disrespected this future. We need those who hold power and authority to take responsibility for the failings of the institutions they maintain. Students will not accept these failings.

08.01.2022 UMSU Southbank extends its solidarity to those on or connected to Djab Wurrung Country. Our state government and its police force should be ashamed of the colonial violence currently occurring on sacred land. This is a cruel act by a government that claims we’re on the road to treaty. We stand with those fighting to protect the value of these beautiful trees and offer our deepest condolences to the losses those on Djab Wurrung Country have already had to face. Below are some... numbers you can call: Daniel Andrews: (03) 9651 5000 Planning Minister, Richard Wynne: (03) 9415 8901 Transport Minister, Jacinta Allen: (03) 8392 6100 Please also phone your State Member of Parliament and ask them to represent your voice on this matter. You can find them and their contact details here: https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/about/electorates

04.01.2022 PSA: The movement for FEE RELIEF at the Southbank campus makes huge step forward as cohorts across the school prepare their grievances to submit to the university leadership. Charging students the same amount in fees for online learning has always been unfair, and by working together these First-Year Production students have made it clear this issue can’t be ignored. Get in contact with UMSU Southbank to contribute to the fee relief movement and see what you can do for your course! #unionism #strongertogether #umsusputhbank #vca #ffam #feerelief #unmutethearts

04.01.2022 We want Stronger Together to remind you that we, as students, are in this together. To acknowledge that this semester has been hard but that we are strong. And we are stronger together.
